ND is top 5 in terms of FB program worth.  ND also is top 10 in terms of endowment, and most of the top 10 schools are not FB schools (ie Harvard, Yale, MIT, etc.). And ND has folks like Joh

Why? Shouldn't the free market play out? Also, it is hard to believe that this money just started flowing. I am guessing that it was already being given to players. Now it's "legal".

We are merging NIL threads into one topic.  There is no need for 10-12 different threads on the same topic.  If you come up with something Notre Dame NIL related please feel free to make a new thread for that.  Please note it in your thread title.  All of these vague thread titles are getting very old now.

Do you mind quoting the source?

I haven't found anything online that enumerates the total alleged allocation of NIL sponsorship funds 25-30 million?

I'm seeing how LSU is trying to carve out their own NIL process as they fear being passed on by A&M and other SEC powers in this arena. Wouldn't this be awesome to see Bayou  Brian get crushed mainly because the school he left ND for was supposedly more ready to win titles, could not compete financially with the SEC powers for recruits

I hate to still talk about him but it would be like instant f*cking karma if they can't get a good recruiting class in '23 & '24.

I don’t see him getting passed up. Kelly seemed good at trying to stay with the times.

He better schmooze the shit out of the boosters and start taking up an offering now.

LSU endowment is 500 million

Texas A&M endowment is 12 Billion about what ND's is

I'd agree that the gap probably isn't as wide when it comes to the football program budgets and donors willing to dole out for the football program and NIL as they obviously couldn't give 2 shits about the school in Baton Rouge, but I doubt LSU can hang with Texas money (UT or A&M).

https://www.silverwavesmedia.com/news_article/show/1180447 - John Jay ND Booster

John "Jay" Jordan gave 75 million to the university and he has voiced his opinion that athletes should be paid.

Jenkins & Swarbrick used to talk about ND exploring non major football options if paying players became a reality(ivy league etc). They were also holding out rights for the new video game based on what happens with the NIL.

https://ftw.usatoday.com/2015/05/notre-dame-football-pay-players-college-sports - Article where Swarbrick said they were against paying players and direct employee relationships is what he's referring to but I interpret this as an early reluctance to adapt to this new model.

I wonder how much pressure donors like these, influenced their tune to change. They've seemingly done a 180 since receiving 150 million from this John Jay guy..

Everything I've researched on the line(WWW), I feel like ND is in a great competitive space for this NIL era; albeit probably not as willing to fight as dirty as some of the SEC giants, and they never have been and never will be IMO.

I think they'll be close enough to compete for championships on a regular basis.

To your new powers comment, I think programs like Houston & Cincinatti will be poised to close the talent gap due to their locations within major metro areas.

My takes.. Could be wrong

Didn’t Freeman speak about this after his hire?  I believe he indicated ND would be competitive in NIL and was in the process of evaluating the process.

Yes. You’ll get more insight from Swarbrick over the last year or so how ND has positioned itself to succeed with NIL.

Freemans response was rather terse.. borderline coach speak.

Yep, and this is why I’ve been so opposed it. It’s like the New York Yankees of baseball. Who can spend the most money to win a championship. We all know ND will not play by these rules. Good luck on ever seeing a championship if it comes to that.

Spot on… with each passing day I don’t think I’ll ever see ND win a title.

You may. It may be an Ivy League title instead of an NC but it is what it is.

The ND board appears to think they actually can take it with them. Is it good stewardship to sit on dead money? Probably not. Is it good stewardship to spend 50m plus to win a championship? Don’t know.

I think the NIL will allow teams like ND to finally compete with the A&Ms, the LSUs, the Alabama, Georgias and Floridas of the college football world.  Now we can organize donors just like them and effectively funnel money to these athletes.  We will see.   This was just the first year of it, and we did ok.  I heard Kyle Hamilton had over $1.5M in NIL and that was what ND was showing to recruits.  So the attraction is there, but I think we can do better.  I like A&Ms approach and wonder how close we can get to a guarantee without a guarantee.

ah yes... free agency of students who are not professionals. Highest bidder wins... The good ol' days of college football are coming to a close.

The "good ol' days" were buried long ago under TV contracts, conference realignment, and a deluge of bowl games. Change isn't coming--it's here. It will continue (and quicker).

The empowerment of the players to capitalize on their celebrity is not ruining the game. Some will take advantage in ways that seem gross. How is that different from any other era of college sports (or the world at large)?

The kids aren't the problem, they're just finally able to start getting what they deserve.

There never was the good ol' days. College football has always been corrupt and one of the best to take advantage of it was Knute Rockne and Leahy after him. The only difference today is that the kids are finally getting a real piece of the pie instead of bags of cash in a McDonald's bag or Casino chips. Treating these kids like indentured servants for decades was wrong. Throwing these kids to the curb once they destroyed their bodies and were given a dime store education was wrong. I will give ND credit that they tried to change and actually educate their kids but even that wasn't enough for what the actual football players brought the university. I love the game itself but the way it has been managed and the way the kids have been taken advantage of for decades is gross.

If a perennial top-five earning program that has its own network to broadcast its games can't compete with NIL, than that's on them.

As others (and I've previously) said, everybody's been gettin' rich off this except the players so it's only right that they finally get a piece of the pie. No it's just a matter of figuring out how to be competitive on this new frontier. If we fail, it will only be due to imagination/willingness ...resources and ethics should have very little/nothing to do with this.

I mean, our coaching titles are commercialized ffs. Just extending that to players would pay huge dividends (the debartalo starting QB, your NBC captains, etc.)

They dont deserve millions upon millions on top of a free education...

@soulpatch I am not worried about Notre Dame competing, I am sure they will be fine. Does not change how I feel about NIL as a whole.

Why don't they? Do you or don't you believe in fair market value? As in if someone is willing to pay it one has the right to accept it.

The market seems to disagree with your assessment of what top players deserve. If they can negotiate a contract worth millions and millions of dollars, then that is what they deserve.

These kids have hundreds of thousands of followers on social media. They can reach millions of people through those accounts. We recognize them. This is all valuable.

Why not? They are entertainers. People gladly pay $500+ to go see one game with their families.

Who should that $500 go to? The Athletic Director? The Head Coach?

why not?  The NCAA and the schools are making $$$$$ off of them.  Pre-covid ND raked in $54M net profit off their football program.

And I bet a forensic dive into the financial report could find those books being cooked and the profit being even higher..

I’m not insinuating any deceit or tax evasion as it’s just an internal report.

the athletic department has many crossover expenses with the educational side.

there was a report about 7-8 years ago before UM gave Harbaugh a huge contract how only a handful of programs are profitable.. such a crock of BS while those unprofitable programs are erecting 700-800 million $ stadiums and spending $10-15 million a year on coaches and analysts.
