TheRizz 5
Wow. This board never ceases to amaze me. Are any of you Catholics? Have you read the Gospel, not written by Ayn Rand or Rush Limbaugh. If you think Jesus was a Catholic, you should read the whole Bible bro. Jesus preached personal grace and accountability. If you don't work, you don't eat. The people with money should help feed the poor and widow and children. However, Jesus NEVER said it was the governments job. No such thing as social justice in the whole Bible. Catholics are losing their religious freedoms and still voting liberal/democratic.

By all means let's help one another to the extent we can. But when government assumes that role of benefactor it soon devolves into coercion and control. The poor soon become just an excuse for a few people to take and maintain control over all the people. The government is not run by angels and you can't force the poor to spend the money they receive from government wisely.

piratey 6
Who asks other people how much money they are making as part of everyday conversation? mcdougal93 0
Who asks other people how much money they are making as part of everyday conversation? You'd be surprised. Th comedian stumbled on an economic fact there at the end though. If companies could pay you less they would. You get paid what you're worth folks and some get paid too much especially in the public sector. And I'm not talking about cops and firefighters

mcdougal93 0
Raising the minimum wage increases unemployment but liberals love it because labor unions negotiate salaries off of it. The poor are the ones that suffer he most with these kinds of laws

Soko 128
$15/hr at McDonalds is already a reality... in North Dakota, because of the economic boom there. No Gov't intervention needed. There was Red Rooster (Australian KFC equivalent) manager on $250,000 a year when I used to used to travel there for work. Market forces at hand. It still does not mean you should be paid $15 for working at Burger King though.
PursuitAce 0
The minimum wage question is old news. The new question is what will be the minimum income the government is going to give you. http://www.reuters.com/article/2013/10/04/us-swiss-pay-idUSBRE9930O620131004 Also your job will probably be going away, whatever it is... http://www.wfs.org/content/2-billion-jobs-disappear-2030 Of course you can keep on believing like Gary Kasparov that you can beat technology... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deep_Blue_versus_Garry_Kasparov But in the end... The good news is... http://edition.cnn.com/2013/12/10/business/ray-kurzweil-future-of-human-life/index.html So keep on smiling...

It is wrong to have "full-time" workers drawing public assistance... so we have to get rid of the minimum wage AND public assistance, or create a system where it is self-consistent with a minimum living standard. The former is easier.
chirodomer 47
I don't have anyone under $18/hr.but I did cut 27 jobs from last year to this year. Sucks but what can you do when the government sticks their nose in and forces market conditions? The insurance companies are chopping away at reimbursement and even on codes they pay and the government is helping them by deleting billing codes from the book. The patients still expect the same level of service though. Smh Edited December 12, 2013 by chirodomer
DTCBND03 0
There's a lotta talk in the General forum about whether we should go with UA or Nike for new apparel contract. People say we can't go with Nike cause they use "slave labor". Somewhat true compared to American standards but it got me to thinking about the Michael Moore movie "The Big One" which is on Netflix (filmed in 1996). He goes around to all the closed down plants moving jobs overseas and tries to talk with the CEOs. He also goes to Rockford, IL which is my hometown and basically been voted one of worst place to live for past 100 years. My parents have lived there 20 years and their house is worth THE EXACT SAME as when they bought it and their prop taxes are higher than Chicago...crazy. Anyways, back to Nike. While most CEOs decline to talk to Moore when he shows up unannounced at their headquarters, Phil Knight of Nike actually agrees. Moore asks Knight why he has all Nike plants overseas and Knight honestly answers "because Americans don't want to make shoes" (meaning hard job for low pay). Moore gets Knight to agree that if he can go back to his hometown of Flint, MI and get a rally of people to beg Knight to open a plant...would he do it. Knight agrees to "consider it". So Moore does this and gets about 50-100 people to show up and lobby for a Nike plant in Flint. He goes back and shows Knight the video and Knight says "that's great but American's still don't want to make shoes." Now you see McDonald's workers lobbying for $15/hour and wonder why all our jobs are overseas? Can't help but agree with Knight. Anyways the movies worth the watch no matter what side you're on. MantyIrish 0
I consider myself to be fairly libertarian. I am about as anti socialist, redistribution of wealth, etc...as you can get. The 'system' is manipulated by those with the money. As a nation we argue a lot about Democrat vs Republican, liberal vs conservative etc... The simple fact is, those who call the shots are none of those things...or maybe they are all of those things, what they are really are....are those that call the shots. Get it? Remember I am anti socialist, but PLEASE watch this video. I saw it for the first time just a few days ago. It says things in a way that I cannot. The picture of wealth in this country is NOT what I thought it was. Edited December 17, 2013 by MantyIrish
DTCBND03 0
Manty - I watched your video and it makes sense as our nation has progressed. Think about the mom and pop stores/manufacturers that are now super companies like Wal-Mart, Amazon, etc. There's power in consolidation, automation and money and now all that money flows to 1 CEO instead of multiple business owners. However, one aspect of the top 1% that is never talked about is the social mobility within that 1%. If Donald Trump is in the top 1% in Year 1 he may fall out of top 1% in year 2. In fact, Trumps companies have filed bankruptcy multiple times. Not same as personal bankruptcy but still hard to rebuild that personal wealth when all your equity is lost in a bankruptcy filing. Look at how many athletes and movie stars are millionaires one day and broke the next. See this link (if you're fairly libertarian I assume you like Friedman and Sowell...they're Youtube vids are awesome): Finally, I still believe that the lower % have it pretty good. Most have a roof over their head, kitchen appliances, a car, cell phones, heat, running water, and a free education.
