How many close losses are you willing to accept before you fire a coach for not being able to win? Many of the games that we won in ND's history which led to successful years and NC's were because of close wins over excellent teams, which easily could have gone the other way. This is a lame excuse to use: "Oh, but our losses were soooooooo close. If only we could rectify them some way, we could be undefeated this year, blah, blah, blah."

You may be right about Stoops. But you may be wrong too. And perhaps he could also just be burnt out from coaching at a school where the expectations for winning and continuing to win are unreasonably high. Perhaps he needs some R&R to recharge his batteries before jumping from the frying pan into the fire? OTOH, a change to ND might be what he needs. It's a risky hire if you ask me. I'd rather take a coach who is riding the crest of a winning wave like Meyer or Kelley and not take a chance that a losing season is merely an abberration or the beginning of a trend.

Bingo! For some reason that may or may not change if he comes to ND, Stoops' performance has been going south. That's a fact and that's why I would be very wary of hiring him. Holtz started off like gangbusters and his performance dwindled somewhat with time. Did Lou lose his mojo? How did he follow-up at SC? I wouldn't hire a has been like Stoops. Take his record at OK and pretend it occurred at ND and his record this year was exactly the same here at ND as at OK. Would that be acceptable to ND? I doubt it.

Just exactly what are the specific academic standards that are preventing so many young football players from signing up with ND, especially on the defensive side of the football? Are they that unreasonably high? What would be wrong with lowering those standards? How do ND's standards compare to other universities who are perennial BCS bowl bound? Is there THAT MUCH DIFFERENCE? I thought there was a minimum GPA and an academic crackdown by the NCAA for all college football players/athletes, no?
