are there classes to teach people what to do in certain situations? for example, if i am carrying and i go to the gas station and while inside someone uses a gun to try and rob the place. what would one do in that situation?

Like everybody else has said, there are too many variables. I would think if at all possible, try to avoid the violence. If the person dictates using force, by all means you have the right to defend yourself, but if at all possible....gather as much of a description as you can about the guy, car, which way they left, etc and call it in. But again, too many variables to give a good answer. In that scenario though, I'd much rather be armed than not if need be in order to defend myself as a citizen. As an LEO, we have a larger duty to do something though.

I believe you are missing the point. Most people don't carry 'just because they can.' They carry in order to be prepared in case something happens. No one wants anything to happen, but if something does...they at least have an option to fight back.

I have carried a Colt .380 for years and most people are not aware of it. My family has grown up and on their own but I am still obligated for my wife. I doubt the need will arise but if it does I will not hesitate.

Its obvious the guy that shot that 17 year old wasnt responsible enough to be toting a gun and was probably a racist. I have friends who carry just because they can and I dont understand it.

Here I totally agree with you Tenacious, I think they should throw the book at this guy. He was specifically told not to follow that kid and allow the Police to handle it. If he would have done that, the cops probably would have stopped the kid, asked him why he's in the area and let him go on his way without any conflict at all. This guy Zimmer is a vigilante and was more or less just looking for trouble.

I CC its part of our SOP's at first I didnt really care too and didnt always until I was out with my wife one night and happened to see a person that the officer that did my FTO hours and I arrested and he glared at me for a long period of time and I did not have my weapon on me, so from then on I make sure that I have my weapon with me at all times.

Loved the original post speedy the part of when to shoot was dead on. Down here I was tought that action is faster then reaction and you make sure that you are the one that goes home to your family no matter what that takes.

How well are Chicago's tough gun laws working?

Looks like a lot of bad actors are carrying while law abiding citizens can't.

Before someone argues that most of these shootings happened in bad neighborhoods ask yourself, do all these bad guys avoid nice neighborhoods? Why would anyone want to take that chance?

Exactly!

I read a few years back about a Texas (I think) town that almost every citizen opened carried and the crime rate was astonishingly low. I'll see if I can still find the article.

I like conceal carry. Not that I have anything against open but it creates problems with freaking some people out and they get the Police called on them. Indiana it's just a permit to carry so you CAN open carry and some of the local cowboys that do, get Police called on them quite a bit. When I have to stop them and ask for their permit, they don't care for that and "remind" me that it's legal,,, which it IS. Still, if I get called because it seems suspicious to someone, I have to check. The carriers usually understand.

Believe it or not, it was legal to open carry in CA until January of this year. The gun had to be unloaded. Ammo could be carried on, for example, your belt.

That law was abolished for handguns but you can still open carry a long gun. There is one a$$hole out here who gets his rocks off open carrying an AR-15 at Wendy's, Gamestop and basically anywhere normal people go. His videos on YouTube are somewhat funny. People freak out over a dude ordering a burger with an AR slung over his shoulder.

Lots of Open Carry people are like this and want to draw a reaction, especially from the police. Simple solution for this guy is all of those businesses have the right to tell him to leave and not to come back when armed, and if he refuses its defiant trespass in PA. I've noticed lately the one movie theater I go to now has a sign up stating "No Firearms". Can't help but to think that this is directly meant for open carriers, as I go carrying concealed and nobody knows.

We have a small group down here that open carry, mostly to the mall. Everytime, we get called and check it out. The stores want to bounce them and we escort them to the car. As soon as they get in the car, ask for the CCW permit. 99% of them have it but just like annoying and freaking out people by carrying. I think they even have a website and forum! ha

Are there any other LEOs here? I carry off-duty when I go to certain places, but I am not a fan of civilians trying to play hero and making situations worse for the public and for arriving police officers. I am all for right to bear arms, but I just dont like what I hear from the people who strongly encourage concealed weapons and this "I'll handle this dangerous situation on my own" mentality. Just my two cents as a LEO myself.

There are groups out there that want you to violate their rights so they can sue. I once had a report of a bunch of open carriers at a local firemen carnival who did not want them there. Too bad for someone of them because part of the carnival grounds was on school grounds, next to a middle school. It was classic when they were hee hawing about how they could open carry. My response was sure but too bad you're on school grounds. Some were shaking when we hooked them up.

That's hilarious! I would pay to see the look on their faces when they found that out!
