Computers, Laptops, Networking Advice Thread

Any IT or gamers or anyone with decent up to date knowledge regarding a good laptop?  My wife is a teacher and basically lives on her laptop.  We've been together since 2009 and she is on her 3rd laptop since I have known her.  I don't know what it is that she does to her computers but she just kills them.

She currently has some kind of HP, unsure of model, its probably in the 4-6 year old timeframe.  Last year, possibly two years ago(sorry I have no reference of time anymore now as my kids are getting older and days all roll into the next lolololol), I took it to a local computer doctor type place to have it checked out for any viruses, malware, and anything else that would cause it to run like a slug.  Came up clean.  Nothing on it.  I think he did say he cleaned up some unnecessary files/programs/bloat type stuff.  I had already maxed out its RAM myself so I had the computer shop upgrade her from a 1TB HDD to a 1TB SSD.  I don't remember if I also upgraded her to Windows 10 or if it already had it on there.  She has already slowed it down to a snail's pace again.

I'm at the point where I am considering just buying her another computer but I am not up to date on the new stuff.  My own laptop is an old Toshiba Satellite from probably 2012, has seen a lifetime of porn in the short window I have used it, and its stuck on Windows 7 but it runs great, its fast, and has no issues other than no longer getting updates from Windows due to being on 7.  I also never really use it anymore as I have no reason to at home lol.

I'm just sick of hearing her complain about her computer lol.

I will be honest. If she is doing typical business work on it, it is really hard to miss with a MacBook. It's expensive, but a middle of the pac Pro or a higher end air will be a great machine for her for many years.

I am anti-apple, but when I am dealing with friends and family that need a capable machine for work (not gaming) and one that I don't have to get support calls on, I tell them to get a Mac.

If she were a gamer, that would be a different discussion.

FWIW I am an avid gamer and have been working in technology for 25 years. My gaming machine is ridiculous (so ridiculous I am embarrassed to discuss it with adults) and my work machine is a MacBook Air that is basically maxed out as of last year when it was ordered.

Hard to go wrong with a intel i7 laptop with 16 GB of member and at least a 256 SSD running Windows for non-gaming usage. Nothing too fancy and should be usable for awhile. Probably find them for less than $800 from Best Buy, Costco, etc.  You can bump the CPU down to a AMD or Intel i5 if you want to save some $$$.

Honestly I don't think she would know what to do with a MacOS computer.  She has never used one.  She actually loves her work laptop which is a Chromebook.  Maybe I will look at one of those.

Hey, I love the outside-the-box topic! A few pics from my setup are below, and

More info and photos can be found at my other in-progress community that I'm building. It's also the place where I test changes a lot of ideas before applying them here. 😁https://www.fanclubs.org/blogs/entry/42-my-creator-desk-setup-for-2023-simple-yet-functional/

I am so out of the loop when it comes to tech stuff.  I used to love gaming, but I kind of grew out of it and play very sparingly on the XBox One or whatever is on my phone like woodoku, mahjong, or solitare.

All my internet goes through my low end phone or tablet I've had for about 10 years.  I download Netflix or Prime movies to the tablet for my extra security job.  My son has a desktop that he got 2 years ago for gaming I guess.

I'm waiting for the next NCAA football to come out someday.  With all the changes happening I don't even know what that games is going to look like when it comes out.  Will NIL be in it, the portal, what conferences, etc.  I wish they could make me one set back about 30 years ago before everything went haywire.

Hahaha, nothing at all to do with it. If I ever need to drive people away, I now have a full-proof idea, though. Thanks! 😅

This is one of the perks of Mac. The learning curve is very very small. There are things that are completely different (like keyboard commands and smart gestures on the mouse / keypad) but if you are not a power user (techie) then you will be up and running immediately. She may have to google things ince in a while, but MacOS is very users friendly. Especially if she uses other Apple products (iPhone / iPad).

Chromebooks aren't very beefy, so if ahe can get by on one of those I would stick with it for cost benefits alone.

Ok I'll look into some Chromebooks then.  Thanks for the recommendations.
