  1. 1 more vote for Harrison Smith - brain freeze, who is the other #22?
  2. Thanks Kell - off topic, but how about Dylan Edwards & the rest of the recruiting effort? Stocking the shelves!
  3. # 28 - Bob Bleier Team Captain Very tough runner & reliable receiver - devastating blocker and a special teams demon. Effectively led Ara's short time recruiting class between Page, Lynch ('67) and Hanratty, Seymour (('69). More famous post ND (Viet Nam & 4 Super Bowl rings) and an all around nice guy.
  4. 75 and 32 were stocked, but, as good as Vegas was, my vote is for Lujack - head and antlers above a great selection of 32s. The lone quarterback in college football history to direct three national titles, Lujack (32) was equally esteemed as a defender. His defining play was an open-field stop of Army's Heisman Trophy winner Felix "Doc" Blanchard during the famous 0-0 clash in 1946 against the two-time defending national champs. The 1947 Heisman Trophy winner was the centerpiece of Notre Dame's Golden Age of Football after World War II, when the Irish never lost from 1946-49. In 1960, Lujack became the youngest player (age 35) to be inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame. 3× National champion (1943, 1946, 1947), Heisman Trophy (1947), 2× Unanimous All-American (1946, 1947)
  5. Both Very deserving- Eddy was the 1st back since Sitko to have blazing sprinter speed, electrifying in returns and from scrimmage. He finished 3rd behind Spurrier and Griese in the Heisman balloting, His knee injuries (and playing for the Lions) derailed his NFL career (152 carries). I was a year behind him at school, nice guy, a real quiet gentleman. Bolcar was a Mack Truck, and a joy to watch. Both great- suggest a co-47?
  6. #54 - George Goeddeke Excellent center on the '66 team, played 6 (+?) years with the Broncos, was an AFL all-star selection. One of the funniest guys on campus- for example - 1st day back, he is cutting across the main quad with a couch on his back... freshman & parents stop & stare open mouthed - without missing a beat, George says, "This is nothing, my sister is following me with the refrigerator", and continues on his way. He also has been great support during his good friend Tom Regner's illness. Athlete, wit, and friend. An ND Man in the best sense of the phrase.
  7. sorry to be late to the dance, but how about Tommy Regner for 76, and George Kunz for 78 (#2 in the draft behind OJ)? Kunz laying out an Iowa defender, and with Hanratty in Playboy
  8. Schmidt & others no doubt used that nickname, but from memory, it was his summer camp roomie, the late Louis Nix who 1st tagged him with the name Tilly Jerrery (and various spinoffs of that). Seems like that was a simpler time. Thank goodness for Marcus.
  9. It also could be the greater availability of the Viking GM & other interviewers - their season is over, where, as has been pointed out, MF is recruiting very hard all over the country. Synching schedules before the dead period in all probability nearly impossible.
  10. Super topic, Brian - and a great, civil, discussion with a lot of information and food for thought. Thank you all.
  11. Add to that, boob's 1st move was to fire Joe Moore (for age - didn't fit the mold) - Moore was the one who recommended boob to Lou, also boob stuck the knife in Lou's back ('I'm worried about his (Lou's) mental & physical state) ...an all time wanker. BTW, whose name is on the annual trophy for the best offensive line in CFB? Joe Moore.
  12. Anyone have an idea? There was an earlier rumor that he would follow Kelly. Meanwhile, right in South Bend: Harry Hiestand - Notre Dame (2012–2017) Offensive line coach Hiestand has developed a number of current NFL offensive linemen with the Fighting Irish, including: Zack Martin, Dallas Cowboys offensive guard Chris Watt, Former New Orleans Saints offensive guard Ronnie Stanley, Baltimore Ravens offensive tackle Nick Martin, Houston Texans offensive guard Quenton Nelson, Indianapolis Colts offensive guard Mike McGlinchey, San Francisco 49ers offensive tackle Some say that he doesn't like to recruit - the fact that he helped attract and developed the 6 fellows above tells me that that is not an issue. #HireHarry
  13. Great info as always Jersey - thanks - our St. Peter's Prep defenders contributed some good play this year - hats off to the Marauders. Ex-Bergen County
  14. zemaniak, you nailed it. This is just what has bothered me about Kelly's offense (and it is HIS offense - read ego) since he got here. He has to be the brightest guy in the room (cute plays) and is incredibly stubborn (define insanity). As a result is normally out coached, wastes talent, and is schooled by better coaches (Saban, Meyer, Sweeney). That said, he has done great things for the program, and is a major upgrade from the 1997 - 2009 circus.
  15. 100% - That is a Bingo, Frankus!
  16. Agreed, it is a dumpster fire & probably will always be - being in the $EC exacerbates that. The key is how to measure 'success'. If he can improve them, as Franklin did, while learning the HC chops in a low downside situation... then that is a success. If he can do that, and we know his skill & character first hand, he is a very real 2024 candidate. It is the path that Kelly navigated and Fleck is attempting to travel. Look at the Ara, Saban, and Meyer career stops. not everyone was unicorns and rainbows, but each contributed to their long term success. I would say that Fleck's move was a greater risk - higher profile expectations and pressure, bigger down side. Just one opinion.
  17. Once quoted, "I can't wait until tomorrow, because I get better looking every day." RIP #5
  18. ND just out lasted the #1 team in the country, which has consistently been one of the top 2 programs over the last 5+ years. For an emphatic punctuation they owned the 2nd overtime. Since Lou the team would have run out of gas. Some of it is greater recruiting depth, and better assistant coaches, but full honor and credit due to Coach Balis and his staff.
  19. Elder, 100%. Somehow his return to NC has them playing at a high level. It may be better assistant coaches, better recruiting... I think the shift from Fedora (almost anyone would have been an improvement) is a major factor, and will wear off as the season progresses. Going back 10 years, Mack has not kept up. Texas tanked before they eased him out because he was resting on his oars, and that will occur again in Chapel Hill. The telling incident was his visit to Saban at Alabama, where the weight room dumbfounded him - his comment was, something like, "I didn't know all this stuff was available"... - well, that's your job, Mack. As a result, I also feel that they are very over rated - and will get spanked when they face strong opposition.
  20. Good question. lame kitten? Terry Brennan?
  21. Cory had an excellent coaching tree analysis that spoke to the results of CBK's comfort picks. It is scary, and unfortunately I agree with it and the comments. Looking, let's say, 11 months ahead, it took 2 great LSU O. C.s a quarter and a half (and a critical targeting disqualification of Skalski when Clemson was only 3 points behind in the 3rd quarter) to crack Venable's defense....Coach Rees against that? Not a good omen for the program.
