Wow.  O'Leary said he feels like he has MORE depth this year?!  I suppose that's a compliment to Ben Minich (and maybe even the walk-ons), but from a numbers standpoint, not sure about that analysis. He must be saying that he thinks he has 2-3 deep that can be effective?  Maybe with help from corner...

I like the room, but they gotta avoid injuries like they had last year or it's going to be a tough season.  Minich and Schuler are likely to need some time.

What is a coach supposed to SAY? Our safeties are not as good as last year? We have two good ones and the rest are not that great?

You hear this type of message from many coaches. We lost XXXXX who was very good but we think that the folks we have on the roster this year have stepped up etc.

Ha ha ha.  Yeah, I hear you, very true.

But 'we really like our personnel this year' isn't exactly the same as 'we have more depth' when you have 3 healthy returning safeties.  It's like he knew it was a perceived weakness, so he wanted to address it by presenting it as a strength.  But I'll imagine he likes what he sees from Harper, Minich, walk-ons, and the corner help (Lewis, Barnes, Tucker).

Would be a funny presser if he walked up and said that, though:  "We have 2 good ones...long way to go"  Mike Leach-esque.

JBrown I couldn’t agree more. When a coach says he feels really good about the guys he has and then the very next thing out of his mouth is

We’ll continue to add a piece here or there, whether it’s in May or after next season, but right now, we have a really good group.”

That doesn’t give me a real good feeling that the portal is on his mind.

Agreed, he shouldn't be confident in his "depth".  But what he said was that they have more depth from top to bottom right now.  JBrown calls it rightly as coach-speak, but unless I'm misinterpreting it badly, his reference to 'the portal and new guys coming in' is an apparent reference to Harper and the freshman ("the young guys:) - the new faces that have already come in - "I wouldn't say we're lacking anything...the depth is there."

Wouldn't shock me if they looked at the portal in the spring window if there's something viable there, but he's alluding to current roster depth - which is profound IMO.

Decent group of safeties, though, barring injuries.

Hey @FaithInIrish Forever. The 15th, and anything that has important new info can be a new thread 👍
