Ukraine imports a lot of gas from Russia. guess who just awarded billion dollar contracts off the coast of crimea in the black sea to go get some gas.....Ukraine. A 50 year supply of natural gas is predicted and the papers were signed late 2013 to start going after it. not only will Russia lose exporting to Ukraine. Ukraine could now become an exporter after meeting its needs.. I don't think Russia wants that.

 

 

Further. 50 percent of Crimea is Russian. 25 percent of Crimea is Ukrainian. 25 percent are Crimean Tatars that were displaced by the Russian government to Crimea a long time ago and have total distrust and outright hatred of the Russian government. In effect, its about 50/50 pro/anti Russia. The recent vote of 96% surprises me. I wonder if they only had 50% turnout and it was the right 50% that turned out.

 

All in all, not much the U.S. can or should do about it. We can be a part of a large group opposing but we shouldn't be leading anything.
