I know for a fact that they used to have mandatory team mass at the team hotel for away games as well. Not as much fanfare but they did have it. Religion aside, I do think that it had a positive performance impact as it did break up the schedule enough to make sure that players weren't getting hyped up too far in advance of a game (especially night games). You're forgetting that the transfer portal makes it annual free agency for these kids. If they're any good and only went to A&M for the $$$, they'll probably be inclined to listen to competing offers and head elsewhere. Meanwhile, A&M will have their scrubs eating up their scholarships when they realize that they can't transfer anywhere else. Only way to stop that is to be a title contender. But I don't think that they're going to be in position to make a run while these kids are still in undergrad.

Difference between #4 and #5 is an extra game against a #12 seed. Think of the spoiler teams that have won BCS games (TCU/Boise State/UCF). There are plenty of #12 seeds that could easily pull off an upset in a single game. For the higher seeds, the consequences for ND are even more pronounced.
