Perhaps I'm reading too much into it, but seems odd that his family had no clue what he was going to decide right up until he put the hat on? His mom seems to love ND though, is she also a 5 star safety with some eligibility? haha

Looks like Dad wanted Oregon.....Mom Notre Dame.  Oh well. Bye Bye Bye.  Never to be seen or heard from again.

  2. I guess Bowen is not coming.  Otherwise why the drama?  His school is not having a ceremony today so it's not like he is waiting for that.   I imagine the young man is still not sure what he wants to do.  I actually understand this as I have a daughter who had to call a coach and let them know she would not be coming.  Biggest factor was wanted to be close to home and go to a better school / program.

  3. Just watched his commitment video and while not a fan of tossing another teams hat this guy is thick. Honestly his body type looks like a ball of power already.   Assuming early entry he could be ready to contribute in 2024.  He has thighs already like Christian McCaffrey....can he catch the ball?

Right in the first year. I've seen numbers just under seven figures projected for him. Its apparently exploded since then. Quite frankly, the numbers be thrown out for high school kids are many times that, "upfront", before ever playing a down. The number for Bowen, a safety at one of the least impactful positions on the field, was 2 million. The QB going to Tenn was rumored to be around $7M. Those numbers put our highest paid player to shame.

Now, do I think these numbers and contracts will "self-regulate", sure. In a few years, but until then, ND is again fighting with one hand tied behind their backs.

My question is where is the money coming from?  I.E. Is it coming from money that was already being paid under the gable or is it money that used to be donated to the University or is this just play money for some rich guys?  If it is play money then this will be fleeting when these donors do not see a return.

What I hope NIL does for College Football is keep some players around to complete their fourth year rather than go undrafted or 5th round etc.  Perhaps you can convince some players to give it one more year knowing they will be receiving a healthy NIL payment and try to play their way to a higher pick as well as help the team.

Either way.....to much ME and not enough WE

Sorry I should have put IMO he flips. I think that Oregon can offer immediate playing time. No source just a gut feeling.

It very well may happen...Rivals has an article on their pay site saying he is looking.   In regards to immediate playing time this is exactly what I would not want if I am a running back.  You only need one good year of College stats.  Two maybe.  No sense having three....it just puts more wear and tear on  your body which adds up.  Hit the NFL as fresh as you can.

JeffV is right. Right now ND is going hard after McCullough (a sophomore), but I believe the philosophy is that ND would rather get a HS player to replace a 2nd stringer who left for playing time. Perfect example is CB. ND is expected to lose a few CBs to the portal and ND is choosing to recruit another CB in the 2023 class, Soloman Davis who is currently committed to Arizona.

Some may not like that, but I think I prefer that method for majority of the replacements. Freeman wants to build majority of the team from the ground up. This may actually mean that recruiting classes will be pretty big each and every year.

I think national signing day is going to have to be pushed back. Half the kids are committing not even knowing who may be transferring in via the portal.  Bring back the one year sit rule and cap transfers in to a reasonable number.  No more 19 transfers in like at USC this year

I'm with you.  I felt the same with A. Walker last year.  Walker could have easily flipped long before he actually did without supposedly telling the staff what they wanted to hear along the way.

I think sometimes a kid truly is torn, as Bowen may be, and in other cases the kid is either afraid to tell the coach they are flipping because of their relationship or they love the extra attention.

Then if they make the decision right at signing day, they don't have to deal with a lot of flack since it's water under the bridge once they sign with a school.

I hate that this drags on. I do believe though that some kids are just torn.  My own daughter who was recruited to play D1 Soccer had to call her coach and let her know she decided against taking the scholarship and chose to go to another school for purely academic reasons.  You never know sometimes. That being said if it was ND who offered her I would have made sure she went though I would not have had too as she had visited many times and would have been the first one to sign.

  8. Very quiet....usually we have reports about coaches flying around the country, visiting with committed recruits firming up their love for Notre Dame.   I see a headline (cannot read article) on Rivals about Peyton Bowen nearing a decision with in-home visit looming.     Anyone with info they can share on coach's schedules? Edit....I believe contact period begins on Friday as per Eric Hansen.
