  4. Cornerback prospect Dionte Allen has become one of the top players in the country at his position. What is even more important than the various recruiting services giving Allen high ratings is the high praise he has earned from the Charlie Weis rating system. “I talked to Coach Weis the other day actually,” said Allen. “We talk all the time. He’s told me that I am at the top of the cornerback recruits and that he’s looking for about three in the class.” Other offered cornerbacks on Notre Dame’s radar include Eric Berry, Marcus Gilchrist, Ronald Johnson and Michael Williams. While Williams and Gilchrist appear to be in the best position in terms of ND gaining a verbal commitment, Johnson and Allen are believed to be more of a Michigan lean. Allen keeps in regular contact with Johnson and considers him to be a good friend throughout the recruiting process. It could very well be the case that Michigan has the slight advantage in terms of Allen’s recruitment, but he has listed his top four schools with no favorite. “My top four schools are Florida State, Michigan, Ohio State and Notre Dame,” reported Allen. “I’ll toss USC and Miami in there as possibilities in my top five.” The 6-foot, 175-pounder holds offers from all of these programs, in addition to merely every major college program. He didn’t anticipate this type of national exposure and only concentrated on one school that he followed growing up. “I started getting letters in my sophomore year, but I never knew it was going to be like this,” told Allen. “I just thought about Florida State for a while, but then started hearing from everybody. I’ve always liked Florida State though.” The Seminoles were brought up on numerous occasions during the conversation as he is planning to make a trip there in July. Other than getting the opportunity to visit the school for the first time, he expects to leave with a better idea of what his decision will come down to. “I’ve visited all the schools in my top four but Florida State,” said Allen. “I’m going to head down to Florida (in July) on an unofficial visit to see the school, but haven’t decided if I’m going to participate in drills since they said I didn’t need to. I don’t have any clear leaders in my group, but I want to get down to Florida State first and evaluate some things before making a choice.” The factors in determining Allen’s decision include how well he would fit into the school, opportunity for playing time, academics, and how comfortable he is with the coaching staff. He had the opportunity to visit Notre Dame last season and left so impressed that he plans on returning to campus in the fall. “I went to Notre Dame for Junior Day and really liked how comfortable I felt with the coaches,” said Allen. “They’re all down to earth guys. I definitely want to head back out to campus in the fall for an official visit and to see the game atmosphere. The campus, Touchdown Jesus, weight room, recruiting lounge with the big screen televisions…all that stuff was real nice.” In the meantime, Coach Mike Haywood will continue to lead a recruiting push to land Allen’s services, as he is clearly one of their top cornerback prospects. The Irish have their work cut out with this Michigan native. *Allen also plays basketball and runs track for his high school. In track, his best time in the 100m is 10.7. He has clocked in at a 4.45 (hand held) in the 40-yard dash and carries a 3.0 GPA in the classroom.
  5. It took Ohio State 60 minutes to put Notre Dame away in the Fiesta Bowl. Tom Zbikowski needed just 49 seconds to get a small measure of revenge. Making his professional boxing debut in front of an energetic crowd that included several dozen of his Irish teammates, Zbikowski made quick work of an overmatched Robert Bell at Madison Square Garden on Saturday night. Zbikowski entered the ring decked out in white, walking through a tunnel of his fellow Notre Dame players, with renowned gospel star Bebe Winans singing the Victory March. The introduction took longer than the bout. Bell, who wore an Ohio State jersey into the ring, went for the kill early and failed miserably. He missed with his first swing, then after an exchange of harmless rights, the 227-pounder whiffed on a big right hand -- and Zbikowski made him pay dearly. The All-American safety countered with a hard left to Bell's head, sending his bigger opponent staggering back to the corner. Two rights followed, and Zbikowski sent Bell to the canvas with a vicious series of three lefts. After an eight count, Bell walked into the last punch he would see, a hard and straight right that all but shattered the jaw of the Ohio native. The referee couldn't step in quickly enough. Now the focus turns back to football -- but odds are now that Zbikowski has gotten a taste of professional success, he'll be back in the ring after the 2006 season. "I'm not stopping until somebody stops me," he said immediately following the bout. Bell certainly couldn't

  13. Seventeen programs have seen enough of Gerald Jones to make a scholarship offer. Jones is planning on an official visit to Notre Dame. Now the 6-foot, 185-pound athlete from Oklahoma City, Okla., figures it's his time to start looking around by setting up an ambitious summer schedule that will help Jones cut his list of potential programs in half before the start of next season. Oklahoma, Oklahoma State and Tech Tech have already received visits with Arkansas on tap this weekend followed by Kansas and Kansas State on June 17-18. But that still leaves double-digit programs for Jones to check out. "I guaranteed that my summer will go by really quick," Jones said. "I'm trying my hardest to visit as many schools as I can." Jones said he won't visit Notre Dame this summer but the Irish will probably be in line for an official visit during the season. The high school quarterback projects at running back or wide receiver depending on the program in question and plans to take all five official visits before committing after the season. Virginia Tech is one of the few programs recruiting Jones as a future quarterback. As for Notre Dame, Jones said the Irish project him at receiver, although he'd rather play running back. "Notre Dame wants me at wide receiver and I'm fine with that," Jones said. "I think I'd be a pretty good receiver, but it would be even better if they wanted me at running back. I let them know that, and Coach Weis told me, 'I saw your film and you can do it all.' He said they'll try me at running back and if it doesn't work out, they'll move me to receiver." Jones plays quarterback for Millwood High School during the fall, but works at guard during the winter and spring. Jones' prowess on the basketball court will force him to make a tough decision because while he wants to enroll early for football, Millwood is the defending state champions in 3A basketball. Jones said the team could return all five starters from last season. If Jones opts for early enrollment, odds are it won't be with the Sooners or Cowboys. Leaving home isn't a definite, but Jones said he's looking forward to a chance to try something new in college. That sentiment didn't stop Oklahoma head coach Bob Stoops and Oklahoma State head coach Mike Gundy from visiting Jones in recent weeks. "It's a possibility," Jones said about staying at home. "I didn't plan on it until I went to visit and I was impressed with OU and OSU. I'd rather go out of state but if something came up and I had to stay close to home, I'd be willing to do that." Weis and Texas Tech head coach Mike Leach rounded out the list of head coaches stopping by Millwood. "That says a lot about coaches for the head coach to take time out from his busy schedule to come see a kid," Jones said. "One of the best things I like about Charlie Weis is that he's very up front and blunt. He doesn't beat around the bush or sugar coat anything. He tells you exactly how everything is going to be. You would expect that from an ex-Super Bowl champ." Jones also gave high marks to Leach and the Red Raiders. "Mike Leach is very similar to Charlie Weis," Jones said. "I got a chance to visit Tech and they were real cool there. If I was to go there, I could probably do some damage in their offense. The biggest thing that stood out is that the people were blunt there, they told it like it is
