  1. Got a nifty 'All Posts' button added to the homepage. Click that little dynamic view button (arrow below) and you can see all new posts across the board, or even check the boards (right column) you're interested in (red box below)

Thanks Big - yes, that is what I was referring to.  There were links to tweets and articles on a bunch of different topics like the NCAA tourney, etc.  Looks like the main 2022 recruiting thread got fixed to your point. Thanks again

Sorry @D Fence. Didn't know that was what you were referring to. Yeah, that was a bug with the transition to the new software. Going forward, it shouldn't be a problem, but I'm working on seeing if there's a way to fix broken ones from previous posts.

This might be because tweets got blown up. So any post with tweets in it then got linked to a ton of other non ND tweets due to embedding from the original tweet. I’ve cleaned some of the main recruiting thread. It looks like a massive 247 advertisement in others though but it isn’t meant to be and will clean up over time.

Thanks for covering, @Big23Head. Didn't realize that's what was being referenced. Thanks ?

    Really like this.

The twitter feeds there for us to see.

I love how easy it is to create a poll. The reaction/like button is there! (Bottom Right, looks like a heart)

    Reminders the helped me were:

I click the topic instead of the persons screen name. The screename leads you to the persons profile, which is great  but I usually want to reply or read the topic

Threads are known as topics(Start a new topic, is the same as start a new thread used to be)

    Same video in thread functionality.

Private messages work awesome(looks like an envelope Icon)

have both file drag attachments and file upload attachment choices.

Can surf between all the boards!

I'm really thankful for this. Exciting stuff!!! Thanks!

Thanks Faith! Also just learned I have the ability to embed a poll from a topic into the sidebar. As you may have noticed (or would, soon!)

I'm referring to desktop. I don't really know how to elaborate.  On the old board there were 2-3 times as many rows as there are now.  Each thread is about 3 times as tall with lots of empty space between.

And I'm seeing the bold now.  It just is not as stark a contrast as before.

I think I know what you mean. In the most simplistic form, the reason for it is most likely to adapt to mobile. Over 50% of people view websites now from a mobile device, and this format easily adapts to both. The previous forum was desktop-only and allowed for much better precision since the design was primarily for PC / Mouse usage.

Woohoo! Glad that worked! You can also right click a picture online and copy then paste here as well.

And don't worry. I have a private theme I'm working on that'll make it feel like home (I hope) when it's done. Takes quite a bit of work though so that may take a few weeks. But it won't stay this vanilla.

Is there an edit post feature that I am missing? I don't see anything on the old posts that would allow me to change them.

EDIT: Ok...so this one showed up with an Edit button but the above ones do not.

    Hi, Big.

To the right of the word Author, on my screen there is 3 dots. Click on those three dots for more optons if you see them.

Sorry about this. Thank you for all you do!

Thanks again both of you! Did some digging in the back-end and there was a 5 minute time limit (for members) on edits by default. Just changed it to unlimited. Can you check again and let me know if it shows. Thank you again!

    2 issues with the update-

    1) Each line takes up 3 times as much screen real estate (at least).  Leads to dramatically more scrolling.  And it is all wasted whitespace.  Any way to condense it?

    2) There is no visual clue that there is a new post.  It may be a color scheme issue, but the old software would bold a thread if there was a new post.  Any way to do that?

    1. I'm not aware of any way to condense it right now. The forums follow Google's best practices for mobile, but for now there's not another way I can see to condense everything. Are you referring to mobile or desktop / can you elaborate a little bit more on what you're referring to?

    2. Everything might be bolded right now, and show unread because we're on new software. If you view a thread, or mark everything as read, everything shouldn't be bold anymore. Once there is a new post, it should bold back up again. (Attached)

Just the link or the embed link?

Also, any idea why it is dragging in a crazy amount of tweets from the other ones?

Just the link itself will work and it will auto-embed. So all you need to do is paste something like the link below and it will come across like this.

    https://twitter.com/NDFootball/status/1375932398148452352

I believe it isn't working because previously it was using HTML embeds, which are disabled by default on newer forum software. I can enable HTML, but I get a warning message when I go to turn it on. So I'm going to leave it disabled. I'll see if I can go and turn your previous posts in html. Otherwise, I'll need to just dig the tweet out and edit it. Still looking for a way to do this at scale.

    Sorry for the inconvenience here.

When enabled, users in this group will be able to post raw HTML (in areas of your site where it is also enabled). Allowing users to post HTML is extremely dangerous and malicious users can use the feature to damage your site. It is strongly recommended that this feature is not enabled at all, or only for trusted staff groups.

    Thanks @Big23Head

  9. @Big23Head, I'm looking into if there's a way to fix all the broken twitter embeds at once. Still not much luck, but I'll keep looking. But for any updates, all you need to do going forward is paste the link to the tweet and it should auto-embed going forward. Back-fixing it has been a bit of a challenge. Worst-case scenario is it might require manually editing the post and just pasting the link to the tweet's themselves.

    Thanks for keeping this going!

The other issue I see is that the video links can no longer be played with in the thread but show up as links. Is this going to be updated so the videos will actually show the video rather than the url link?

Yup! Going forward it should just be a simple paste of a url to embed a video. Some content just didn't play well through the transition since it's deprecated code that was being used.

I’ve always used my phone to view the site. I liked the thread listing better and it was easier to identify when there were new threads in a topic.

This is good feedback! So keep it coming. And no worries about criticism. I'm open to it as long as it's constructive. I'm not sure if I have an option to make it more visible on the homepage, but I will look into it. In the meantime, if you scroll to the bottom of a forum, you can click the following button and whenever you visit the site you will see a little dot showing you all the new content posted since you last visited.

Not a big fan of the changes. Makes it harder to navigate. Might finally be done with this site.

Sorry to here that. It's the beginning of a lot of upgrades. Forum software was 13 years old which not only wasn't suitable for mobile, but also hasn't been supported for years and could be a security risk.

If you have any specific complaints, let me know. This is not the finished product, but I will continue to work on the design which I'll push out when it's ready. There will be a slight transition while I do so.

Irish envy is using the newest version of this old forum software. I just finished upgrading to newest version and then migrating to another platform. Still work to go.

There will be growing pains, but hope you decide to stick around. But I'm always open to ideas ?

    Thanks

Wow this new format works so much better on a phone.  Thank you.

One critique, the threads where folks post a tweet turns into a never ending slew of tweets they didn’t post/link and just continues as you scroll down.  Noticed this mainly in the recruiting threads.

Glad you like the new format! Still some work to go regarding style, but wanted to have as little downtime as possible.

Thanks for the heads-up regarding the tweets. I'll see if there's a way to fix that, but that might need to be manual edits. If you see anything else that's out of whack, please drop me a message. It was a very big update, so I expected some stuff to break, unfortunately. Tried to preserve as much as possible in the process.

  14. Forum upgrades will be taking place over the course of the next 72 hours barring any issues. The forums will be down for a little bit, but we'll come out on the other side with a brand new home!

  15. Hey everyone! As some of you may have seen, I have some plans to do some way overdue upgrades with the forums in the coming days / weeks. I'm currently doing any and all checks to make sure the transition is as seamless as possible, but there some things you need to know.

While most everything will transfer over, there may be some stuff lost in the transition. Nothing major, but I want to give a heads up.

Community Features that will transfer are below. Not all are currently being used right now, however:

    • Emoticons (maybe)
    • Profile Field Groups
    • Member Groups
    • Member History
    • Ignored Users
    • Private Messages
    • Member Ranks
    • Club Members
    • Custom BBCode
    • Profile Fields
    • Members
    • Status Updates / Profile Comments
    • Announcements
    • Private Message Replies
    • Clubs

    Forum-specific features being converted

    • Forums
    • Posts
    • Club Topics
    • Attachments
    • Topics
    • Club Forums
    • Club Topic Posts

    Probably not transferring - BACKUP!:

    • Avatars
    • Signatures
    • Also, Custom Plugins / Add-ons wouldn't make the move, but I don't believe we're using any.

I don't believe forums or signatures will be able to get transferred when we upgrade to the new forums. If you're around, please make sure to backup your signatures and profile pictures. You can re-upload your profile picture when we're on the new forum, but signatures would likely be limited to your profile page, if you choose to bring it over.

If there is anything you see missing from the list above, please let me know in this thread. As well as any concerns you have.

    Styling of the new forums:

When the upgrade initially rolls out, expect to see a more generic color scheme for a few days or weeks while I Domerfy it behind the scenes. Everything will eventually get back to the Notre Dame color scheme, but will take a little bit of time. to get there.

Please don't hesitate if you have any questions in the meantime. You'll like what's in store. I promise.

  16. Sounds good. These days aren't so bad but back in the early days Gabe, myself and the other OG Mods were fighting spam daily tooth and nail. Gabe did a lot to rectify that. (Excuse me while I wipe some brown stuff off my nose LOL) Nowadays, the Mods really add to the content such as Brian (Faith). We'll be behind what you want to do. It's your baby and we just want a great place to talk about the Irish.

Spamming Forums were the way of the world from 2007 - 2012, I believe. It was a quick and easy... dirty way to get backlinks that actually worked. Thankfully it's no longer an effective way to build website authority, but not everyone has caught on. I can tell there are a lot of checks & balances to prevent spammers from participating here, from my own experience just signing up. But I understand the necessity. This forum software was from 2008, so spammers and hackers can bot the hell out of it if these measures aren't in place. When I get them upgraded, the spam control should handle those pesky bots, but if not, we'll do what's necessary. :)

I JUST sent an email to Gabe regarding some plans / a preview for where the blog is headed. And added questions you just answered. But feel free to bug him about it (or send me a PM) :thumb:

  17. Gabe, can you make Mike's posts "approved". I had to approve his last post. Greetings Mike. Hope you enjoy your new investment. Please don't go back and read what some of us said about PSU during the "dark time". It wasn't pretty but before all that most of us had some healthy respect for PSU. :-)

Thanks Speedster! I'm really looking forward to growing the brand of DomerDomain, with the knowledge & utmost respect for the term "Domer" referring to alumni of Notre Dame.

As for the things said about PSU, I absolutely get it. No hard feelings here. I feel like a traitor to Penn State nation for taking this on, but I see nothing but potential here with some real TLC. Waiting to have my diploma revoked and get banned from Beaver stadium if they ever catch wind of this.

And when I mentioned before that I'm open for any and all suggestions or comments, I mean it. Feel free to drop a message if anything ever comes to mind. I'm very transparent and always open to listening to feedback.

As for moderating, I'm going to be hands off there. Everything will remain as usual. That's not my forte. It's not what I'm good at, so I'll leave that to those that have had it under control :-)

Thanks again for the warm welcome!

    WE ARE!

  18. You’re going to have to tell us your allegiance now. We’re all curious. Otherwise rumors will swirl that you’re an Alabama fan. [Gasp] lol.

PS: I root for Toledo, too, so it’s all good. ?

Oh we can't have rumors swirling that I'm an Alabama fan! I'll let you all discover who I'm a fan (and alum) of via

    . Don't worry, it's a good memory for Notre Dame fans :(
  19. Hello all! And thanks for the introduction DonJuan! And also thanks for granting me permission to post.

As stated, I've been reading the forums to get a grasp of what you all expect with the transition. I plan on giving the forums a nice facelift, but you don't have to worry about it looking like Irish envy. I'm not a big fan of vbulletin's newest software, which is what Irish envy is on, domer domain being an old version. But I will be transitioning to new forum software. It's my favorite of all the ones I've tested, which is all of them, and I think many of you will enjoy the upgrades. Hopefully everyone.

That won't be happening overnight, but I do plan on moving fairly quick in this regard. When that day comes around, I'll try and do it late in the evening, and have there be as little downtime as possible. But DonJuan or myself will give a heads up.

Look forward to getting to know everyone and if you have any questions, just send me a message or leave a reply.

P.S. Sorry for the brief loss of posts from today. I thought we made it through without a hiccup, but there's always something. Luckily it was pretty minor.

P.P.S. I'm not a fan/alum of USC, Purdue, Navy, or any school who could be considered a current rival.
