With the way this class is filling up, it's become a greater point of curiosity for me to figure out who has a spot in this class no matter what - and who's likely to need it. For instance, Michael Floyd is a strong candidate, but I don't think we'll need to wait until the winter to see where we stand with him. That in mind, what are your educated guesses? Here's my (albeit short) list - one that is glad to've read the now free premium access material from scout on a guy named Steve...

LB Steve Filer

WR Jonathan Baldwin

OL Matt Patchan

I hate to go off topic, but it was funny about what Patchan had to say about the Pac-10 and Big 10. He said the Pac-10 was the weakest conference and that besides USC the only other decent team is Cal. and they aren't even that good. He went on to say The Big-10 is just a ridiculously slow conference. That they are big but slow and he saw that during the national championship last year. Thats some pretty funny stuff and he pretty much sounds like a Miami kid already. We are the only non ACC or SEC school still in the mix for him. I don't know if we will hold a spot for him because he is not waiting until the very end to decide because he's an early enrollee. Filer already said the coaches guarenteed him that. I don't know about Baldwin though, If Floyd and Butler (Fat chance) decided to come here I wouldn't be too sure. I don't think there is too many guys at this point that we'd "hold out" for. But there are always those few and the only one I know for sure is Filer.

I'd say Fortson, Filer, Floyd and Arthur Brown are the guys we wait on.

You dont wait on anybody, because once you get through a year of not waiting then you have not only solved the "committment problem which charlie has but you send out a sense of urgency that ND waits for no one so if you want in you better make a decision and get started.

i'm beginning to think that this may be the way to go for ND re: recruiting...dont think all the other schools could do it, but ND and about 8 other schools could/should do it IMHO.

if the NCAA pushes up LOI to Sep/Aug this will change whole complexion of the cycle....doesnt hoops have an early AND a late period? is that what ncaa looking at for football or just one LOI and thats it?

The talk is that there would be two signing day periods.

I think there has to be exceptions though.

This is the type of stuff that got Penn State into trouble in the 90s. They would wrap up mostly local guys, and their classes would be full usually before the season starts. They'd offer guys who'd accept right away, and miss out on bigtime recruits. This led to a lot of mediocre talent, and the results on the field showed it.

I don't think it should be a habit of this coaching staff, but there are some special guys you have to hold a schollie for. In cases like Arthur Brown and Will Hill, I wouldn't be one to hold a scholarship, because from what I've heard the interest isn't exactly high. But for guys like Fortson and Floyd, who are bigtime national recruits and have definitely showed an interest in the Irish, I wouldn't want to miss out on them just because we don't think we can take anymore kids.

^^^^^ here here. I'm a little annoyed on the way A. Brown is going about his recruitment in the first place and to me he's not even really an option. I like guys like McDonald and Golic...yes Golic who bring their lunch pale everyday and go to work without having an agent like guy do all this stuff for you and your brother with scheduled texts and phone calls. Forston and Filer have been told they'll have a spot held no matter what and Floyd? hopefully soon...

Arthur Brown's "advisor" really creeps me out too

Heisman, can you clarify that please???

I personally don't see why we'd hold one for Forston, that position is filled and he missed the boat, sorry. I'm of the opinon that you should hold 2-3 spots open for the Hill's, Brown's and Filers of this class. If we end the seasom with 22-23 commits, you just wait and see if anything falls in you lap, if not, save them for next year.

This guy, goes by the name of Brian Butler, is from what I gather his personal trainer/recruiting adviser/mentor. Whenever recruiters go to talk to Arthur Brown, they go through this adviser figure, not his HS coach (which is strange in and of itself). This Butler guy in fact heads this non-profit group called "Potential Players". So basically, he's acting as a pseudo-agent to about a dozen or so local kids, who tour the country with Butler, Arthur Brown included. And the thing of it is, Arthur insists on touring the country with all the prospects involved.

The whole thing doesn't sit well with me either.

It all depends on the coaching staff, and how they feel about the player. The article linked above shows pretty much that the ND staff, regardless of numbers, will be holding a scholarship for Fortson.

Again welcome Katz :D
