Just wanted to let everyone know that Charlie Weis was in Chicago today. My sister-in-law was at the Ritz Carlton and as the elevator opened in the lobby Charlie was standing there and then getting out (with I think Michael Haywood). She says, "that's Charlie Weis...that's Charlie Weis." All of her girlfriends had no idea who Charlie is but she knows her football.

Anyway, I thought he is involved in some recruiting in Chicago in one way or another so that's why I posted that here.

hmmm....Filer? Good eyes Rizz's sis in law, thanks Rizz.

I heard he sang Take me out to the ballgame at Wrigley yesterday.

Isn't it still a dead period? I'm not sure coaches are out recruiting at the moment. It's pretty much camps and unofficial visits right now.

there wasn't a game at wrigley yesterday.. and he didn't sing it today cause i watched the game..

I think Weis singing on sunday. I know i'll be watching cuz i'm a cubs fan anyway plus hopefully they'll have a nice little interview like they did when that hack zook did it.

Cw stilll can visit a school without talking to the recruit. :D

My unadulterated wish list (regardless of interest level from the recruit) is Pryor, Will Hill, and then Filer. Sabino just don't make my peaches shrivel! I think the kid is a tad bit overrated. He's good but not in the same league athletically as Filer. I think just being from Florida causes analysts to stretch their belief that you are elite. Filer is and Sabino is not!

I couldn't disagree with you more AP. Sabino is made for the OLB position which requires speed and athleticism. Filer is an equally impressive LB, but he is bigger and fits the ILB postitions because of this. The best thing you can say about Sabino is that he moves better in space than anyone else in this class and that is a huge asset.

Yeah... I think I've become more excited about Sabino because Corwin has.

It seemed like when they processed the film on Sabino, and the offer was extended, that the Irish quickly made him a class 1 priority. Blanton was made "the" corner they had to have, Newman was made "the" lineman they had to have, and it sounded like Sabino made the same impression amongst the defensive coaches. Filer was thrown onto ND's radar quicker, but I think the two are pretty equal in the staff's eyes to be honest - with perhaps Sabino making an even bigger impression. From that point forward, I agree with benneboy. Sabino is a true OLB, and fits our class needs better than Filer would IMO. But thats just me.

Lets not forget another kid he could drop by on and say "hey" to: Darius Fleming, of St. Rita HS on the south side.

-----I think Darius was at camp a few days ago hanging out with Golic, Cave, Goodman, Rudolph and all those guys. Good to see...And I'd like to add Sabino is a much bigger priority because he plays OLB.

I'll take them both but Sabino is very important because we need another olb.

Calves and Law, I'm not disagreeing with you so much, but when you say we NEED another OLB is that really the case? I mean I could be confused because theres been so much speculation about which recruits will play where and lots of guys seem interchangable between end and olb. But, if memory serves me correctly who exactly do we have lined up for ILB? Aaron Nagel and Steve Paskorz? Not that they aren't good prospects but they are players that have played different positions throughout their HS careers, and now are being turned into LBs. Aside from MacDonald and Brian Smith, ND has brought in almost no other real inside backers. We do have Toryan Smith as well, but to me, getting a quality ILB is much more important at this point than yet another OLB. We just have so many bodies there all ready, and so many guys that could go between olb and rush end. I realize its a vital position on the outside, but if teams are running the ball down our throats up the middle all day those outside speed rushers aren't gonna do much damage. I think Filer is very important to this class. Just my opinion tho.

I agree NY. We often speculate on the boards as to what needs the coaches are trying to fill and who will play where. Now, sometimes it is obvious but on at least a couple of occassions each year during Charlie's tenure, on NSD, he has specifically identified players who wuold be playing positions other than what has been discussed publicly. This may be the case this year as well. We will have to wait and see.

During the evaluation period...which is over, I believe.

I'm pretty sure that Filer is being recruited for the outside position. One of the other sites had a breakdown on him and his skill set was perfect for the olb in a 3-4. I'll try to find a quote...

I wouldn't list Filer as an inside linebacker prospect, and certainly not a Will (weakside) inside linebacker candidate. Make no mistake, Filer is a big-time prospect. It's just that the term "linebacker" covers a broad range of athletes, and Filer's skills cannot be maximized at the positions Brown, Hale, Beal, McDonald, Sabino and Sweat play.

• Filer's style—Sabino is listed at 6-foot-3, 228. Sweat is listed at 6-foot-2, 225. Filer is listed at 6-foot-3, 220.

All comparable in size, right? All comparable players, right?

Not exactly. Whereas Brown, Hale, Sabino and Sweat are pure Will linebacker candidates, Filer—in my opinion—lacks the "suddenness" (to use an old Bob Davie term) for the position. He doesn't fill the hole in the middle of the line of scrimmage with the same explosiveness of a pure Will linebacker.

Filer is an outside linebacker or, if you want to project how he might develop physically in the long term, a defensive end prospect. Filer plays much bigger than his listed 220 pounds. He doesn't change direction like a nimble inside linebacker must, and certainly not as well as the above-mentioned prospects. He is not at his best when he is moving laterally, as inside linebackers must often do.

But put Filer on the edge where he can use his size and his physical nature to apply pressure against an offensive tackle and now you're talking about a guy who could be a beast to contend with in pass rush situations, or head-up on a tight end trying to spring an outside run.

Put Filer in that position and you're playing to his strengths.
