OK let's run this by the membership for opinions.

We have a shocking 16 verbs at this point in time. Ty's first 2004 was one in July. By many sites and outside articles, the best guess is we take 22 this year. Any more offers will decrease the 2008 schollies? (This depends upon transfers and 5th year guys.)

The bus is leaving the depot here, say we have 6th left and some are urging us to slow down and wait for October.

Is there or will there be anything left for a walk on?

Also, is it possible Weis can convince his classmate Golic (who has money) to pay for his son on his own dime freeing up a schollie? That's $44,000 or so a year 'friendship fee.'

if its me i follow the gamblers rule: Ride the HOT HAND for all its worth.

2008 recruiting cycle is going to be a Picasso.

Give out the MAX, screw the walk on if you have to, forget about 2009.

i think lemming said we could go to 25 MAX.

I say DO IT!!!

This is the year!

I wouold have to agree if the kids feel that this train they are getting on is going to produce a NC in the near future.I say let them get on board and max out the schollies.IMO if we keep getting these elite ball players CW will probably stop handing out the 5th years.Only if he believes they are going to fill a position.

- First, I don't see much point to slowing it down. If you're confident in your evaluations, that they were justified in offering a kid, then go for it, no looking back. I could see them maybe waiting for another late blooming OL like Dever (Weis did say OL is the most prone for "bloomers"), but other than that, pedal to the metal.

- As for walk ons, anyone besides Thomas Bemenderfer seems out of the question. They might have already saved a spot for him as is, but I don't see the space for anyone else.

- 23 might be a nice compromise between "max it out" and "save it 'til next year". Thats just my take on it, since I'd like to leave space for Maurice Crum Jr. and Terrail Lambert.

- I don't think we see Mike Golic Jr. not take a scholarship. We offered it, so we have to stick by it. It'd look totally classless to ask the guy who was the FIRST commitment for this great looking class to give up the scholarship for somebody else. Even as a gesture, it makes it look like we don't care about him as much. I mean how many guys would interrupt their European vacation to worry about recruiting?

And what happens next year with his brother Jake? We can't have one brother on scholarship and another offered only to see it pulled. Nice idea to save a scholarship, but I think its too complicated for the staff to broach to the Golic family. Don't see it happening.

yeah its always nice to reward the walk-ons but its not that feasible.

with the exception of bemendefer, which i hate to say it, if his family is well off and you don't expect him to transfer without a schollie, don't give him one unless he ends up starting.

i think you will see charlie hold out and not play a hot hand. also mike golic will pay for his son , which i think that he will be all most as good as his dad was. what say you ? go irish

Well rick he's got the radio, tv and talking things income $44,000 won't hit him much if weis says i need that schollie for another. They are buds and Weis took him above others

Its NOT going to happen! Remember how Weis talked about how a verbal commitment is like a marriage? BOTH sides have to stay COMMITTED for Weis to keep using that analogy. Its not just Golic - when Mike committed to Charlie, Charlie committed to Mike, period.

And his brother Jake makes it even more complicated. What, Mike has to foot the bill, yet his brother doesn't the following year? Or are we going to recruit Jake as a "preferred walk on" - 'cause that'll go over well  .

Keep daydreaming if you want, but what's done is done. Mike got the scholarship, and he's going to keep it. Weis won't do that to him, period.

No calve. :D

Apologies your missing it.. Guys on a Lacrosse or baseball. What would be the biggist PR Public Relations then Mike golic paying for his son ad freeing a scholle for ND??????? Your forgetting Mike is in 'showbiz';' That would ever edify his son. :D Maybe i am wrong but if I had the dough, that's waht i would do...plus you k now more publicity for son.

I could ramble on this from multiple directions, but until then, I'll believe it when I see it happen.

i am with calves COMPLETELY on this one. no way CW asks golic to pay or mike golic pays, publicity or no....not gonna happen. it's nice to daydream about it but that's all it is, daydreams...

Senior is going to pay for junior to go to school. Charlie wouldn't ask for it but he's gonna get the offer anyhow. 45k a year is chump change for golic, he will end up doing it. Mark my words. wow "mark my" is too close to "Mark May" for my comfort, I think I just threw up a little. :(

I'm shocked how many of you are familiar with the Golic financial situation. You putzes think just because he played in the NFL and is on TV he must be rolling in dough. What you forget is how shittily the NFL treats their former players in terms of long care benefits and pension. You also forget that Golic has experience multiple health related problems associated with his time in the NFL. And lastly, you forget Mike played long before the contracts got out of hand like they are now.

I'm sure Golic does pretty well for himself, but I know plenty of Notre Dame families that would rather send their kids somewhere for free than to pay for a preferred walk on spot at Notre Dame. This is a stupid topic because 1) it will not happen and 2) Charlie and Mike won't even discuss it.

We'll remember to rub it in your face if he does then.

You are obviously uninformed about Golic's wealth by your reasoning and assumptions above.

no buester, i think its a valid argument Golic has the radio show, ESPN TV, speaking places,,, why not ask this ND guy to pay his sons way?????

Write it off on taxes as well. Open a Schollie for a poor guy??? your missing that is good publicity for ND all around. :D PR is PR and baby that's PR in spades. :D Golic comes in... who the heck notices... with this he has a splash. Think out of the box on this my friend blue

Back on topic, I think that we'll take about 22-23 unless we have some 5-star studs drop in our lap closer to signing day. With that said, I have no problem with Weis taking 25 if they fill needs we have, not just becuase we can get them. I wouldn't worry about keeping any for walk on's, I know its a romantic notion of having kids walk into a program and make the team, but when the train is rolling like it is, you ride it as long as you can - you can't save spots for wal-ons at this point.

As far as the Golic thing goes, I believe that its possible that Sr may offer to Weis to pay for Jr to go to school, but I don't think that CW will accept the offer and keep Jr on scholarship - he is a man of his word and he did offer Jr an athletic scholarship to ND and I believe he will honor that offer.
