Goebel Down to 3 per Rivals

Michigan and ND. I kind of want to roll the dice on Ethan Johnson because of that 1 last spot and Ethan is a game changer. I was all over Goebel to become Irish before the Omar committment, but once he committed it changed because I didn't expect Omar to come here and it then left 1 spot left which I would like to roll the dice on Johnson. Just like Sweat I preferred we roll the dice on OLB instead of taking a 3rd ILB...Does anybody else agree?

I agree, though I'd word it a little differently. The Irish needed four, and wanted five DL prospects, going into this year. Just speculating here, but I wouldn't be surprised if the staff offered Goebel thinking he was the most likely to verbal out of all the offers. Midwestern guy, Catholic school product, a lot like Sean Cwynar's recruitment is probably what they were thinking.

But surprise surprise, a longshot pledged early and became our 4th DL get in Hunter. Now, the profile of the next DL commit instantly changed. When you look at our recruiting class, we've only got one DL commit that isn't just a run plugger. We want to round out our class with an explosive player who can get in the backfield regularly at the end spot. With 4 guys, we no longer needed "a guy". We need "the" guy. I know the recruiting services like him, but maybe Goebel isn't "the" guy for ND. After all, he was the 9th DL offer - not quite the highest priority on the DL totem pole.

But a lot of this is coming from the outside looking in, so take it FWIW.

I post on a Buckeye board that has a guy who is pretty close to Goebel. They also had an interview on the kid, and I gotta say they've been very good at pegging this kid. OSU needs Goebel more than ND does at this point, and they're pretty of the consensus opinion that it would take a miracle to make Goebel anything other than a Buckeye. With Ethan Johnson and Marcus Forston saying what they are, and with Kapron Lewis-Moore still being on ND's radar, I'm not sure ND makes the effort to make that "miracle" happen.

We'll see though. If Goebel comes on board, I certainly won't complain. But if he doesn't come on board, I won't be crushed either.

I post on a Buckeye board....

HAHAhahaha... :D

Yes, when DD was down for a couple days, and I was in my darkest "posting" hour, I wanted to hear more on Andrew Sweat, so joined a Buckeye board. They aren't all knuckle dragging goons, actually. Though I gotta admit, they think I'm the only tolerable ND fan they've ever heard, so the disdain between the fanbases isn't fictitious.

Not only is it amamzing that you can cross over to the dark side and come back, but how in the world do you find the time to post on multiple boards ? If you were a one word answer kind of guy I could understand, but you, my friend, are a writer.

Thanks for the kind words FANATIC.

NOTE: Clichéd preface about to come. Hopefully my track record of not having the much ballyhooed "insider" will make this instance more believable.

This will probably be the only time I know an "inside" source on a prospect this year, let alone any year. I practically fell into this source, so this isn't the beginning of any pseudo-journalistic recruiting adventure. I'll save the real fact finding for Nick.

I'd rather not publicize the source's name, or the nature of his connection until after Goebel commits somewhere, for the sake of privacy, but if you're still dying to know or have questions about his credibility, I can try to answer your questions via PM. Though I won't make any promises.

The bottom line here is, Garrett won't be coming to South Bend. At this juncture, it is Michigan vs. Ohio State in this recruiting battle.

Again, if you want to know more specifics about where he stands with UM and OSU, and what went down with ND, feel free to PM me and I'll try to give more specifics - no guarentees though, since I don't want to name names.

But Notre Dame is definitely the 3rd in his top 3, and that won't change any time soon.

Keep an eye on a kid out of Houston named Damion Square. He's a 260-pound DE/LB prospect who will be in town for camp beginning the 24th. He's a cousin of Derek Curry who decommitted from A&M (although who hasn't decommitted from A&M this year) and opened back up. He's got some family connections to Mike Haywood as well. I think his grandfather and Haywood's father go way back. Could be someone worth following.

He looks to have very good offers and highly ranked. Have you heard of interest from ND in him and vice versa?

Re: Square...yes and yes. It will be interesting to see if he walks away with an offer after next week's camp. Miami is probably the favorite, though.
