i dont know about all you DDers, but i have to say if Sharpley is the starter this year im gonna be disappointed...i'd rather roll the dice and see what we have with the likes of DJ, JC even ZF (if by some miracle he was to stay)...Sharpley just to me seems to be a "stop gap", "safe" "boring" "reward the guy" "seniority rules" play for Weis...he seems only to be in the final 3 b/c of familiarity w/ the system, knowledge of it, and thats OK, but i feel you learn by doing and the other guys will learn (esp DJ) as they increase their experience w/ it...anyway, wondering if anyone agrees that Evan Sharpley, to me, doesnt have the "juice" and really doesnt generate interest/excitement/buzz for the Fall 2007 campaign...i know wins and losses are all we care about, but i think we can get the same amount w/ one of the other 3...

 

maybe i just dont think his name has an "ND QB" ring to it...

You know this how? None know anything, we have nothing to back up our opinions. If Sharpley wins the job, then he's the best QB. Good luck to him. I couldn't care less if he gets me hard, I want him or whoever plays to win football games.

I have the same feeling about Sharpley, to me, when I hear his name I think back-up. Maybe its because he's always been the back-up, maybe because he wasn't highly touted in high school, or we've always talked about him playing baseball if he didn't make the final cut of the competition.

Of course all we've ever seen him do is hand the ball off, so I guess its not a fair assessment of his talent, maybe's he's better than certainly I, and probably most everyone, thinks he is. With that said, CW knows more about QB's than all of us combined, and if he picks him to start, he must be good enough for us to win with.

I couln't disagree more. The reason people aren't more excited by Evan Sharpley is because he was recruited a long time ago, and he was recruited by Ty Willingham. But I think Sharpley is a guy who could help us win. Look at what he's done in the Blue Gold games. Two years ago he was 10/12 passing. This most recent one he was 5/7. Not bad at all. Everybody's just rooting for Claussen and Jones because they're newer and they had more hype. Although, I remember Sharpley had a reasonable amount of hype too at the time. One thing that hurt him was that he didn't compete in the Elite 11 or the AAA game. But if I'm not mistaken, I think he had invitations to both - but for one reason or another didn't go to them.

 

My point is that if Sharpley helps us win more now, then I'm all for it. Let's not forget that winning football games now helps recruiting, which helps win games in the future. If Claussen gives us a better chance to win, then he should be the guy. Same thing for Jones.

 

To say that Sharpley shouldn't get the job because he 'seems' like a boring stopgap doesn't make sense. And it's not really fair to him.

i don't think it'll matter which QB starts the season because i think JC will eventually be the starter before the season is over.

Here is how I see it:

Weis loves accuracy from his QBs. He even said Clausen threw the ball the best, and that was with bone spurs on his elbow. Imagine how much better he would have been had he been healthy. If his recovery goes well and hes ready for fall camp, there is no way that he isnt starting vs. GT, IMO.

I totally agree with LOWE and FANATIC on this one. I would like to know how anyone can even evaluate Sharpley as a QB? The kid could be the next Joe Montana and we wouldn't know it. Didn't good ol Joe spend 2.5 years as a backup? I'm not implying that Evan is the next coming of Joe Montana. What I am saying is that it is unbelievable to me that some write the kid off because he saw negligible playing time behind statistically the best QB in the history of ND football.

 

I still think Evan is a dark horse that will start the season at #1 because he poses the least risk at screwing up the game. Charlie was a risk taker when he had the best QB in the nation...I think he becomes more conservative now because that will give the team the best chance of winning. He is a winner and is being paid to win the right way. I expect he will do whatever gives his team the best chance at accomplishing that.

 

I believe it was RUSS that spoke the truth on this thread. If Clausen doesn't start at the beginning of the year...my bet is that he will be by the end of the year.

the crazy thing is....i agree with everyone's take above...even those who disagree with me, I agree with their points too...and im not even running for political office!...what is happening to me? maybe im spending too much time on DD...

One thing is for sure, none of us really know. Each of the 3 finalist bring something unique to the team and so it really comes down to who progresses the most and which of the unique needs helps this team the best.

 

With regars to Irish21 avatar, I totally agree NDisNCDin2010. Every time I read one of his posts, I always feel an extra point of emphasis because of the avatar. It's almost like he's saying, don't argue the point or else. I can't wait to get that kid on campus.

Actualyl NDCin I was dithering between the bat masterson Avitar I have and the one below which is Bat and Wyat earp. I had twisted by b in Laws Michigan arm to put the ND Football in Bat's arm... He did the photo shop work on my avitar and the below Pix he originally Had Notre Dame on bat's white shirt and on Wyatt's he put SUCKS.

sorry but that's not accurate. we *do* have something to back up our opinions. granted it's not much at all but we do have the BG game, and the eyewitness accounts of a few coaches at that clinic a few months ago who were allowed to view prcatices.

 

now, is that enough to form a reasonable opinion? well, ummmm, no but hell, we gotta do *something* in june to pass the time!!

 

irish21, that's exactly the point i made weeks ago and why i do *not* think DD will be the starter, despite all the other things he brings to the table. i look at like when the pats drafted rohan davey years ago. they were intrigued cuz he was big and could run, etc. but the starter was still bledsoe and then brady. in other words, CW flirted with the dual-threat qb but always came back to the pocket passer and i think that's what he does in this case.

 

and i still say JC is the starter come GT...
