With shark, rhema and stovall all leaving the past two seasons...who are we going to put in as our "go to" wide receiver.

I know we will increase the running game and Carlson will catch more balls this year, but I can't get it out of my head how valuable WR's are in this offense. I compare it to New England's offense where they tried going with just anyone to fit they system...and after that failed, they went out and go 4 premium WRs...

Can Jackson or Parris crack the lineup? They are the only two I can see with size...and I would love for Gallup to play the slot, but West appears to have that locked down.

Any thoughts?

I think Grimes could have a big year. Also excited to finally see Hord in action. Parris should get some time as well. Can't wait to see Tate and Kamara either.

i have posted many times on our WR situation on diff thds here at DD...the Little and to some extent A. Benn recruitments set us back BIG TIME at WR...i just dont see the current guys we have really being what we need...sure Kamara could develop to a Stovall type, grimes is serviceable...but IMHO i dont see anyone on campus now (gallup, west, grimes, parris, etc) being able to get free from and out run the likes of the cornerbacks and safeties at USC, Mich, etc...we need BIG TIME WR'S!!!...FLOYD has to be Irish...or we are gonna see the Boy with th eGolden Arm Clausen throwing to TE's and RB's little 5 and 10 yd dink and dunks for 2-3 years...shocking to me the BEST WR's are not tripping over themselves to get here??

Agreed NDinNC - I'm amazed the elite WRs haven't come yet. Not sure what Little and Benn were thinking but it'll hurt them as well as us in the coming years.

Kamara I do believe is a stud and it'll be interesting to see how Tate pans out since he has limited experience there. Both I think will take a year to get acclimated to the system.

I would prefer any 2 out of the 3 between Floyd, Butler, and Baldwin please.

Kamara in my eyes is/will be a better receiver than any of the WR's we have comin in or will have-Floyd, Butler, Baldwin, Goodman or Odom

Kamara played in a run based offense in HS. if he played in passing offenses they way most of the top WR's in high school do, his numbers woulda been sick.

Best thing that happened to him is that he DID play in a run ofense in HS and already knows how to and likes to block.

he's got the size of an NFL receiver. he'll be an All American eventually at ND barring injury

Guys, don't forget Golden Tate in this mix. He has the potential to be electric in the coming years as well. I also really like the upside Parris brings to the table, what a pair of hands he has.

The bottom line is the fact Rhema McKnight one of the better WRs in Notre Dames history in regards to yards (4th all-time I believe) and TDs went undrafted. Another thing to consider is the fact that our best WR the last 2 years opted on baseball over football. Samardjza going in the first round would of been a huge sell to recruits. Elite HS talent is not just looking for an education, they are looking to see what the best stop gap is to get them into the NFL and get big time NFL money. Notre Dame hasn't had much in regards to big time NFL WRs aside from Tim Brown (Didn't include R. Ismail in there, because he made his name as a return specialist more so than a WR in the NFL).

That D.C. WR and Little did hurt, although its not an unfixable situation. If we manage to land Floyd and Butler this year we are going to be just fine.

In response to NCin2010, we're definitely green at WR, not much experience beyond Grimes, but until we see them in action it's hard to assess what the group is capable of. Looking back at some of the Pats teams and their lack of a "playmaker" at WR, Charlie was still able to run his system effectively and win rings. I agree that filling WR positions has been more difficult than expected, hopefully Floyd will change that sooner than later.

D.J. Hord has an incredible opportunity this year; he has the goods to be a #1 at ND but the injuries have killed him. This year, we'll see what he's made of. If he doesn't pan out, we are going to have a possession-oriented passing game, featuring Carlson and 7-10 yard outs to Grimes (who has great hands, by the way) We'll have to wait until Clausen is a JR/SR to have that same spread offense that we have had in the next two years if Hord cannot produce.

Everything i've been hearing lately points to Butler not coming to ND. We still lead for Floyd though.

I'm no expert but from what I have heard all signs point Butler to USC

I would take a tall receiver over a fast receiver any day of the week. If the receiver is 6-5 or 6-6 with great hands...it doesn't really matter if the 5-9 DB is right there with him. Throw it tall. Don't forget that we have several trees at the TE position that have exceptional hands too. If CW can get some confidence in the starting QB, we will definitely have a bunch of targets to throw at. The complexity of it confuses me already, so I can't imagine a defense that is trying to prepare for a two TE set, 3 WR's, AND the running game of TT, JA, AA, RH etc etc. Throw in the possibility of DD being the starter and the threat he would bring with the scramble and this all adds up to a huge advantage to us and a severe headache for defensive coordinators. I think it will be nearly impossible to defend inside the 7 yrd line.

What have we heard recently when it comes to Butler? Have there been recent comments from Butler to suggest we should be pessimistic? Not to be rude at all, but I've heard the assertations that Butler isn't a future Domer, but with nothing more than personal opinions paired with them.

Yes, he was glowing over USC after their visit, but he also had some very good things to say post-ND spring game as well, which was the last big thing he's done. I for one haven't heard anything directly from the Butler camp since then.

I guess what I'm getting at is, does it really make sense to assume that no news is bad news? Or maybe there are some new links that somebody can dig up.

I agree with the running game we are capable of now, those receivers might have a little more room to get open, as the backs have to hug the line a little closer.

I think Butler is FSU's to lose but of course I could see him going to USC because of what they have to sell.

With that being said, I think Kamara is going to take a little time to develop but will become a go-to stud for Clausen and/or Jones in the near future.

I've always liked Grimes and I believe he will step up and have a 700 plus yard season with 8 TD catches.

Parris needs to bulk up a little and learn to get away from press coverage but he will surprise some people this year.

West has the speed to be a major factor but his height is a setback. Hopefully he can develop into a Matt Shelton/Joey Geatherall type of player. Same with Gallup.

It is puzzling why receivers aren't knocking down the door to get here and I understand why Benn chose Illini because of the early enrollment issue but damn...he could be starting for us this year!

Floyd is a must get and I would love to see Charlie stay on the phone with guys like AJ Green and Buckner and see if he can get them to make a visit to South Bend.

Calves, your right about recent comments, havent heard much. I'm not saying were out of it at all, like I said, I know nothing, just my gut on the kid. I hope I'm wrong and we land him, just don't think we do.

Butler admits that he was tempted to end the recruiting process early after returning from USC.

"The only other team that was the equivalent of USC was Florida. They won the national championship last year and they have good, athletic team coming back. But USC is really ahead of the game.

"To be honest with you, after I came back from USC, I was telling people that I wanted to have a press conference after our spring practice," said Butler.

Right... the Omar Hunter's of the world are rare. He even mentioned that the day he got the Michigan offer, he thought about committing on the spot. It took the ND visit to change his mind off of Michigan... maybe Butler's last visit would do the same, but maybe not.

Clausen needs to light it up this year for our WR recruiting anxiety to end.

Paisan, thanks for the link.

I would say the 3 schools are ND, USC, and FL with USC ahead by a pretty good margin. With his polish, I believe he could step in pretty early at ND if he were to come and be a huge help but it's not looking the best right now.

IC, I think Butler's situation is a bit different here. Hunter had never visited ND until the unofficial before his commitment. He was blown away and committed.

Butler has visited already and sounded impressed, but not as impressed as his USC visit. Not saying we're out of it, but we are trailing.

I think this sums it up pretty good!
