Others have addressed it but we've had issues with name calling recently, so the mods here probably won't turn a kind eye to your comments, guys. I'd suggest knocking it off real fast, just so that we all don't have to hear another lecture on being PC.

Calves, what's your breakdown of our schollie list for this class.

Its a little off topic, but I will give an answer.

For the most part, this is how I' see it shaking out:

QB - 1

RB - 1 (worthless prediction: Thomas)

TE - 2

WR - 3 (worthless prediction: Floyd and somebody - today, its G. Robinson)

OL - 4 (worthless prediction: Page)

DL - 5 (worthless prediction: E. Johnson)

LB - 4 (worthless prediction: Sabino)

DB - 3 (worthless prediction: Slaughter, Blanton, McCarthy)

If we snip a scholarship from this list to get the # to 22, I think its at RB - its the area of least need, compared to all the other positions that are still taking scholarships. If we snip another scholarship for some reason, its probably at DL - we've put out the fire with two NT's and two DE's, so the next guy would only be gravy; not a "necessity".

The murkiest area is on defense. I still see the Irish taking 9 players between LB and DL, and right now the DL should beat LB to that 5th scholarship. Though it is starting to look dim with a couple prospects, there are still 5 guys offered at DL, allowing the staff to narrow in on their top priorities there. Not the same luxury at LB. We gotta cover our needs with a 4th LB, before we can honestly tell ourselves we should turn away a DL prospect for the potential of a 5th LB.

You could make a case that LB gets 5 no matter what, by leaving the DBs with 2. But with 4 DB offers very high on the Irish, and all of them indicating some level of interest in deciding near or before September, I think that position gets filled up to the brim before the LBs even get their 4th verbal. I just don't see our staff deciding to cool their jets on a 3rd DB they're confident they could get a verbal from, in favor of a bigger roll of the dice for a 5th LB. I think this staff is tired of getting left at the alter late in the year, and with 4 LB's last year, 4 should do fine this year as well.

But at that point, its just educated guesswork. I definitely didn't see Trevor Robinson as a Husker, and nor did I see Omar Hunter as anything but a Wolverine. Take it FWIW. But those #'s are the most "predictable". Its not even how I'd do things if I were in charge, so its not inherently biased by what I would like to see as a fan - just me looking at the ND tea leaves, and seeing where they point to the most.

I did those so we didnt fill up the other thread with something off-topic..

Here's mine

QB - 1 done

RB - 1 (worthless prediction: Thomas or Milton Knox)

TE - 2 done

WR - 3 (worthless prediction: Floyd and J. Brown)

OL - 4 (worthless prediction: someone not offered yet)

DL - 5 (worthless prediction: E. Johnson)

LB - 5 (worthless prediction: Filer and Sabino)

DB - 3 (worthless prediction: Slaughter, Blanton, McCarthy)

I think that McCarthy might be the only safety we go after, so if we miss on him, im not sure we'll offer anyone else. maybe brandon leslie, but i know the staff was looking at him to see if he could play CB.

I think we'll miss all on the OL we've offered so far, and if we get a commit, it'll be from someone that's not on the radar right now.

I picked J. Brown to play WR because I think he commits to ND, but I dont know what position he'll play yet. As for LB, I think we're going to get 2 guys. I picked Filer and Sabino, but it could be Will Compton on another LB that the staff falls in love with. With all the talent at LB and DL this year, I cant see the staff holding Frazer's schollie for next year's class.

With the pretty good OL classes we've had in the past few years, maybe Weis will change Nuss, Nwankwo or Stewart back to OL and take one less OL.

Anything could happen, like if we miss on Thomas and our other guys, we might not take a RB.

Maybe that lineman we have from Northwestern Bemedorfer (don't know how to spell his name) or something will get a scholarship.

I think its Bermenderfer, and it would be cool if Mike Golic let his kids walk on to free up a couple schollies.

I'll give it a try. I'm gonna use the number of 24 scholarships. I'm only typing in the names of those not committed to ND yet. This is going to look optimitstic but I feel good about that optimism.

QB: 1--done

RB: 1--Carlton Thomas

WR: 3--Floyd and Butler

TE: 2--done

OL: 5--not sure but I'll say Page and Forst

DE: 2--Ethan Johnson

DT: 2--done

LB: 5--Sabino and Filer

DB: 3--McCarthy, Slaughter and Blanton

These are mainly guys that we are all talking about but I think this is a year where we don't have alot of new guys added to our list late in the process. I think we are sitting good with alot of guys right now who we will land without having to dip into our B list (we'll call it a A- list) too much. I also think we should consider a kicker.

What about that punter from Tulsa Union... Matt Romine's school?

Bemfender will likley take a schollie for this season, don't know if it will be permenent but Weis has awarded walk on kids schollies on year to year basis.

Rock,

I think that your list leaves us with a full class of 25 this year.

That said, IMO, I would leave off Butler, Forst, and Sabino leaving us with a 22 man class.

I'm also going to say that we have a better chance at Baldwin than Butler.

I can't see 25. I forget who posted it but that would only leave us with 15-16 for next year.

i say ride the hot streak this year if we can...2008 is loaded, and from what i have heard 2009 pales in comparison to 2008 talent wise. but it is obviiously WAAAYY early to make that call-just what i saw on one of the recruitnik sites (think it was Lemming)

24 is a very optimistic # for this class - let alone 25.

My scholarship breakdown goes as follows:

85 scholarship slots - 14 (class of 05) - 27 (class of 06) - 18 (class of 07) = 26.

That number is already higher than it actually is as of today. I took the liberty of assuming that Frazer will find a school to transfer to in the near future, so the class of 06 is at 27, rather than the original 28 that signed.

So, with 26 in mind, there are 6 players that could apply for a 5th year (Ferrine, Lambert, Crum Jr, Vernaglia, Justin Brown, and Jabbie). Therefore, if all were granted 5th year status, the most we could bring in at that point would be 20. That, however, is highly unlikely.

This much is guesswork, and will in part be contingent on the results of this upcoming season, but for now, there are two players that you'd have to leave a 5th year open for - Lambert and Crum Jr. Anything is possible - there could be a "Joe Brockington" that even catches fire from obscurity - but after seeing draftable guys like Carlson, Laws, and Zbikowski come back last year, its not safe to assume that established starters like Lambert and Crum will automatically move on. I wouldn't assume as much, and I don't think Charlie will either.

So, taking that breakdown into effect, the best guess of scholarships available is at 24. But, as robdog_5 pointed out, Bermenderfer will most likely get a scholarship. I personally don't see Weis as leaving a guy on the OL 2-Deep at center getting hung out to dry, and I don't see him pulling that a year later. So with Bermenderfer in mind, that brings the maximum grand total to 23.

And that # is assuming that Weis wouldn't want to save the scholarship opened up by Frazer for the 09 class. You could easily make a case that Weis would rather take their 15th or so best prospect from the 09 class in favor of the 23rd or 24th best prospect in the 08 class.

I know it doesn't quite work out that way, but imagine how we'd feel if we knew we were only taking one more prospect in with this class. Thats a reality we're facing next year.

All I'm saying is, what Weis does with Frazer's scholarship - again, assuming he finds a suitable situation elsewhere - is not set in stone IMO. A case could be made for using it now, or in the future.

24 or 25 sure feels nice when you look at it right now, but I'm not even sure that it is possible at this point - let alone whether Weis would want this class to get so big, and take away from next year's haul.

calves, what do you type?? 80, 90 WPM. you are without a doubt the wordiest poster i have ever seen. that being said, keep up the good work!! :D

Love Calves posts :p

Calves, you are new to this board but you have been a great addition. 750 posts in about 2 months. Pretty impressive.

the thing isnt even comparing the classes. just the positions of need in these classes.

i dont know what 2009 looks like, but in '08 we have a chance to get some studs at the LB & DL position. That's the only reason I think we'd use Frazer's schollie with this class rather than next.

I also envision at least 1 of the 3 (nuss, stewart, and nwankwo) goin back to OL
