Safety Commit?

Anyone know who Brandon Leslie is talking about:

“I went to their spring game last month and they told me they were really interested, but that they just had a safety commit, so they wanted to wait and watch more tape to see if I could play corner. They came out to the camp to watch me and they were happy, so I'm hoping there’s an offer soon.

Might be like what happened with Fleming (Verballed a few weeks before he went public).

If I had to say who it was, I'd guess it was McCarthy.

Slaughter is being recruited as a CB.

I posted this same question over on Envy, so we'll see if they heard anything.

I agree this could be a misinterpretation. The Spring Game was a while ago now and I keep thinking of CW's comments about no silent commits, so it would seem unlikely that if someone did commit prior to the BG game it would stay under wraps for so long IMO.

are we looking at him as a CB or a Safety????????

Blanton is being recruited as a corner, so that couldn't be this theoretical safety we're talking about. I think he even plays corner in HS, so it couldn't be that either.

Leslie's phrasing is pretty awkward, so while I want to believe someone from this class verballed, I'm still too skeptical. Why would Weis's coaching staff advertise a supposed "silent commit" to another recruit, even when they weren't dealing with them as a real commit? *Scratches head* I'd need to sit back and think that one through...

I'm with Rockne on this one, and chalk it up to poor phrasing, and that its Harrison Smith who was referred to. Part it makes more sense, part it's easier to believe.

He phrases it as if we are not recruiting anymore Safeties this year, but we are, we have several offers out. My guess is that he meant this year, and I think it may be McCarthy. Only real safeties offers we have is McCarthy, and Will Hill.

Another alternative to that could be that, Charlie is saying that Harrison Smith just commited, but basically he's not good enough to get an offer playing safety because we want to reserve that spot for Will, or McCarthy.

Wasn't Weis' policy, no "soft" verbals, not silent? He said that he couldn't force the kids to go public but did expect them to stop visiting other schools. A solid verbal is a solid verbal.

I think he said you basically come out with it or dont bother

I thought he just wanted to eliminate any possibility of doubt.

Nope. CW said no more soft verbals, no more silent verbals. Either you commit or you don't.

I'm sorry, but you guys read way too much into this stuff. There is no way that we haven't had any verbals since CW got left at the alter and pissed off last NSD. One obvious example is Darius Fleming. He didn't just commit out of the blue, he was on board for some time, even if it was just a couple of weeks. I'm so sick of hearing about 'you are either in or you are out', CW isn't going to bully kids into committing for ND and personally I think its a stupid approach. His 'policy' is that if you want to come to ND you better make your intentions known to the staff AND basically your recruitment is over in that you are taking no more visits to other schools. If you choose to visit another school when committed to ND, ND simply voids your commitment and continues to recruit that position and roster spot. My point of all this is that guys to 'commit' and not make it known right away. Some may want the attention of a quite period, others to make a splash at something like the Army AA game. Regardless, to believe that every player is going to jump on board just b/c CW and his staff threaten to recruit other players at a given position, thats not a threat to players. If they want to be apart of ND, they will but we will at least have our asses covered if the unfathomable should happen.

. “They said that I could maybe play corner for them and that an offer could be coming, which is huge because they don’t need safeties, but they do need cornerbacks. That’s why they haven’t offered yet.
