May 21, 200718 yr The recruiting year would be a success no matter what if we locked these two down. Pocic would definitely be a nice consolation prize if we didn't land one of the three from Page, Forst, or Patchan. And Goebel looks and sounds better and better every time I hear from him. I'll try to catch at least one of these kid's games this fall, as I've said before, and give the notes to Nick for a write up. That is, so long as they're still on ND's radar.
May 21, 200718 yr sounds like kemp stood out at WR there as well. are we still in the mix for him? i believe we could be but we better hurry up and offer if we want him
May 22, 200717 yr Author we're gettin close to the end of may when Goebel was said to be narrowing down his list. I think we'll be top 2 or 3 when he finally does. As for Pocic and Kemp. Not sure if we should offer Kemp yet, but I wouldnt mind offering Pocic soon. Everytime I hear something about him, i like him more. And so far I've only heard good things. I know he seems like a Midwest recruit, but that's good for a big bruising OL who likes to mix it up in cold weather. If we have Kemp as our top 5 wr's then i say offer him, if not then good luck to him. I know we dont want to get all of the offers out there b/c there may be a few late bloomers that pop up once the season starts or after the combine season.
May 22, 200717 yr If we dont offer Pocic by Friday hes not considering us...Ianello will tell him in the next few days if ND's offering or not
May 22, 200717 yr I think Kemp has great size, but I haven't been able to see film on him yet. Pocic is my #1 OL target. Forst is RU and doesn't want to leave home and loves Schiano(everybody does he's like Holtz with his speeches.) K. Page is a good one, but with his offers and in the middle of SEC territory that will be a tough get. To get Pocic he said we have to offer by the end of the month so I expect an offer to come his way soon and he grew up loving and dreaming playing for ND even though he says that won't factor into his decision(suuurre.)
May 22, 200717 yr Author totally agree knight. schiano spoke at a football banquet my senior year and it was inspiring. he guaranteed that he was staying and that rutgers was where he'd be b/c nj was his state and he promised us that rutgers would turn it around. he was right. he has that presence that when he talks you listen.
May 22, 200717 yr Gallup did Pocic tell you that personally, I thought that he said he would wait till the end of the month for ND
May 22, 200717 yr Author i read that in either the interview or one of his articles. either way the month practically ends this weekend.
May 22, 200717 yr Author i agree. we need to keep this guys in the midwest when they're recognized. his story seems to me like he's realized that he could be really good in football and now he's working his butt off. seems great for this kid and what a grea way to reward him by offering a schollie.
May 22, 200717 yr Gallup did Pocic tell you that personally, I thought that he said he would wait till the end of the month for ND he told me earlier today he told Ianello that on Sunday night.
May 22, 200717 yr Considering he's not going to verbal on sight, I'd like seeing a verbal extended to him soon, and hopefully wait to see how he does his senior year - though he might want to decide sooner than that. For a personal reason, it'd bring some symmetry to me if we got a top flight OL talent from Illinois. When I was a freshman in HS, there was a senior at my school that was a 4-5 star OL recruit, Martin O'Donnell. Was a great guy, academically driven, the whole nine yards. A lot of of guys were after him - Michigan, PSU, Nebraska, etc - but Willingham's notoriously lazy staff never even gave the kid a sniff, even though there was interest. He ended up at Illinois, where - from what I've heard - the environment hasn't really helped him blossom in the classroom or on the field. So personally, I'd love to see us "make amends" with Pocic, and save another good prospect from going to Illinois: where football talent goes to die. One thing that makes me curious... a lot of times, posters here talk about needing that southern speed element, from Texas and Florida. People say thats why we got blown out vs. LSU, because their squad had "wheels", while we were stuck with a lot of average Midwest athletes. From there, I juxtapose it with comments from guys who want to defend guys that come from the Midwest, protect our back yard. We say we need to "establish pipelines", and things of that nature. Does that seem sort of contradictory? I mean both sound great when you think about them individually, but is it really fair to ask the coaching staff to make both things their #1 priorities? Just curious how some of y'all feel on that one.
May 22, 200717 yr IC, I think that most people your referring to think that we need the mythical southern speed at the skill positions, while it is fine to recruit OL/DL and some LB's from the midwest. To me, fast is fast, and slow is slow, no matter where kids are from. I know we've beat this "speed" issue to death, and I'll sum up my feelings by saying that Minters style of def would make make UF look slow.
May 22, 200717 yr IC, I like what Charlie and the staff are doing, going wherever they want regardless of if a pipeline is established or not. You win some and lose some but Charlie has worked his ass off making ND a national player. I like looking at our roster and seeing kids from all over. I'm actually impressed w/ who he's been able to pull from the south already.
May 22, 200717 yr IMO...it is not neccessarily the region that has these 'speedster's' in as much that the style of play that their respective school utilize. For instance, alot of high schools here within the L.A. Unified School District are attempting to mirror what Pete 'Poodle' Carroll is running at USC. This makes sense since he is visiting their respective schools, participating in seminars, camps and the local 7 on 7 spring competions. And like Scotty, I like that our staff is reaching out to all areas/regions in an attempt to get the best athlete...period.
May 22, 200717 yr Mmkay... good points all. Thanks for giving some different input, on a bit more of a national perspective.
May 22, 200717 yr Here is a breakdown on Goebel http://sports.yahoo.com/ncaaf/news?slug=rivals-126521&prov=rivals&type=story_recruiting I wanted him before I read the article, but after reading it, he seems like one of the most important recruits this year. I really hope he comes to ND. Him and Pocic would be great for this class.
May 22, 200717 yr I'm sure most of you heard this but Garrett says he will visit ND on 5/31 but is unsure of any other visits.
