I figured, its months until they play Georgia Tech, can it honestly hurt to ask for anecdotes of which game you took the hardest and why?

Oddly enough, for me it was Notre Dame v. Michigan State in 2005. I thought the officiating for that game was terrible, since he was the same clown that helped screw ND v. BC in Willingham's first year.

If you remember it vividly (which is a stretch), they busted out the green jerseys for that game, only to watch the National Title buzz they were generating go up in smoke. Dillingham came in for an injured Carlyle Holiday, yet we only lost by 7 despite still playing like crap. Particularly because we only lost by one score, what remained emblazoned in my mind was the TD pass that was never called. Omar Jenkins got his feet down in bounds, yet they called him out, and the Irish (I believe, correct me if you know better) botched the FG try afterwards. I can never remember the head ref for that game, but he was older, rather tall, skinny, with a drawn out face. I think he was part of a Big 10 crew.

So when I saw him partake in what I felt was another one of the worst officiated games I've seen in a long time, and to see Notre Dame come roaring back only to be snuffed out by a rival in overtime, a rival that planted their flag in ND's field, I went ballistic. I screamed, I yelled, got red in the face. I broke my alarm clock after throwing it at a pillow... it was bad. I've sworn never to watch a game with that clown officiating ever again, or else I'll lose it.

2005 USC...Its tough losing a game because a coach doesn't want officials to review plays...and when usc calls for a time out when they're out and not be penalized...bull shit...although bc 02 was colder and wet so that sucked too.

You do realize this isn't basketball, care to show me in the rule book where it says its a penalty?

Out of the many things to complain about from that game, at least complain about something that doesn't make us ND fans look stupid.

My vote goes to the Fiesta Bowl vs Oregon St, i was there in person and it was downright painful

I am such a nerd for looking this up, but here it is. 2006 NCAA Football Rules and Interpretations, Rule 3, Section 3, Article 1b:

"When a team's timeouts are exhausted and it requests a timeout, the official should not acknowledge the request."

Nothing about penalties. heismancaliber got it right on that one.

Um i would either go with SC in 2005, after that leinart pass to jarret, i had a feeling we were doomed and i was depressed for about a week after that and then the michigan game this past year, us just getting completly torn apart and our national title hopes with it

I don't know about reaction...but BC in 93 was the most painful loss I've ever encountered. Dwarfed USC 05 in my opinion. We were a National Title team that year behind an unheralded Kevin McDougal at QB. The way we fought back in that game to take the lead was heroic. The kick at the end was tragic. In all my years I have not hear that stadium THAT quiet. Nobody knew what to say afterwards. That day started my BC hate. Willingham's years exaggerated it.

I've been to a few heart breakers.

My top 3 heartbreakers (all of which I attended while I was a student)

3) Nebraska 2000 - Nobody leaves Notre Dame Number 1, or so read the banner hanging from Alumni or Dillon. "Irish, with the ball, at the 40 yard line, injured QB Arnaz Battle has played like a warrior. We've got to go for the W right now. Or Bob Davie can take a knee and go into overtime against the best run option attack in the country." My freshman year and it ripped my heart out, little did I know what the Irish had in store for me.

2) BC 2002 - boy did the bubble burst hard and fast. "New team, new coach, big wins versus Maryland, Michigan, Florida State... hell this coach is even breaking out the Green Jerseys." A little over 4 hours later I thought there was no way it could get worse.

1) USC 2005 - enough said. This was going to be a great game. Then I went from celebrating in the stands, to the 50 yard line after the clock read 0:00, to utter shock and dejection when we couldn't even depart the field from the tunnel because USC was celebrating. I sat in the stands at least an hour after the bands stopped playing. Clearly, anyone who was at this game ranks it number 1.

Worst loss - I wasn't there.

BC 1993 - no words necessary

Best loss (tie)

BYU 2004 - this game stands out to me because we reached the nadir of Notre Dame football of my lifetime. Also, I couldn't stop bitching about the loss, so my soon to be (and current) girlfriend decided to make out with me to shut me up. I guess not all losses are totally bad.

OSU 2006 Fiesta Bowl - made the trip after a great 9-2 season in CW's first year. Had a great time in Tempe, spent some fun time with the woman and another couple. A fantastic trip overall. The loss blew, but it showed we could stay in it with a top level team (game was closer than the score indicated).

Best Wins (seen in person):

Penn State 1992 (Snow Bowl) - my family had to sleep in the board room of a hotel because the camera crew from Rudy was snowed in from the previous week's game.

Florida State 1993 - obvious reasons and because my brother (then a student) got me onto the field for the post game celebration.

Still waiting for a 3rd one Charlie, hope I don't have to wait too long.

BC in 93

I have to say SC in 2005 or Michigan in 2006 i mean first of all SC is always one of the biggest games of all year we lose like that of all the things a last second play but Michigan is up there to i mean that killed our season national title hopes went down the drain, and it hurts to see Quinn leaving his senior year going out like a team that is overrated as some viewers think is just gets me down

I dont know if this can be an answer but the 1st half of Michigan State last year....I know we ended up winning but that first half loss made me want to puke because I thought I saw Ty on the sidelines...I saw the collapse of my dreams. Luckily we came out on top that time.

In recent memory the 04' BYU game was just depressing. Great way to start the season Ty; i just knew it was gonna be a looong season.

For recent memory you're right. I was over at a friends house, and by the end of the 3rd quarter my friend shot me a concerned look, and asked, "...Are you okay? Do you want to sit down or something?" That one I was doing the hysterical disbelief laughter at, "I can't believe I'm watching MORMONS tromp our a**."

I cannot publish the things I said about Mormons in a Taco Bell in Mount Pleasant, MI that night.

BC 93 was tough because I was only 11 and it was my entire world.

SC 05 was tough, but even after losing that game ND had gained a lot of respect.

U-M 06 was horrible because I live in Michigan and it ruined what I thought was going to be a banner season.

And whoever said first half of MSU 06 is right. That was very, very hard to take.

Worst loss in person was at MSU '00, horrible ending, flat out horrible. I sat in Spartan section w/ some friends, rooted the whole game. After last second TD, this guy w/ wife and kids in tow jumps at me with his finger in my face talking all crazy. I feel horrible looking back but I told him I'd kick his ass in front of his wife if he didn't get out of my face. Luckily I had good friends with me that diffused the situation, for the time being anyway. A few hours later we were at the bar and I felt sick about the game and this guy who had to talk all this smack. I decided to leave and grabbed a couple 40's at the store and sat on a corner waiting for my friends to come out. A cop came up to me and made me dump it out, he was a jerk so I went a got another one. Same cop comes up, a little more pissed this time. Eventually I get a ticket that goes unpaid as I move out of state. I totally forget only to find I have a warrant 5 years later at a traffic stop. It was a horrible day that wouldn't go away. Luckily I paid the ticket and that was that. I will never go to E. Lansing again because of that. I warned my parents when they went last fall. I hate that place. A close 2nd to that was FSU a few years ago, total blowout. I sat next to FSU fans who were spitting dip on Rock's House the whole game, I was furious. Guess I'm a little more mellow now.

Heisman i checked you're right....still hurts though. Losing when your team plays almost perfect heurts the worst. Good catch though, I wasn't trying to sound like SC cheated, just saying that such moments of emotion everyone, including the zebras, were emotionally drained and everything hapened so fast. I know there should have been 5 seconds at most put back on the clock, that wouldn't have changed the results. This is however american football, not rugby, number five did what i would have done...but it is still against the rules. Anyway no sour grapes, I just can't wait till football season to see more great football.

I look at it like CW does, if it was us I wish Darius would've pushed BQ right into the end zone.

And like another poster said, that loss was brutal, but at the same time its probably CW's best coached game since he got here, and i'm not saying that as any sort of insult at all

You're right. The gameplan was excellent, and the offensive execution was about as perfect as you could ask for. To run right at the area of strength for the USC defense, and still have success? Was tremendous.

I think seeing him execute offensively with that specific gameplan gives me, and many others, worlds more hope than we would have, going into this season with the inexperience at QB. Man I hope we can run that well against opponents this year.

I take all losses pretty bad. During a game I am not the same person as I am the rest of the week. If yo saw me watching a game, you would think I am crazy. But the losses I took the hardest were:

1. USC '05

2. Michigan '06

3. MSU '05

4. BC '02

5. Nebraska '00

I wasn't old enough to know about the '93 BC game or anything before 1996.

It can't be worse than BC 1993. SC 2005 came close but the timing and importance of that game made it sickening. Plus the opponents, just horrible
