Guest domehead
Would like to hear some opions on Notre Dames academic standards and if you think that they are affecting our recruiting? And also would like to hear opinions regarding early enrollment at Notre Dame ( Aldridge ). Go IRISH.
Guest Snatchy_McPants
This is a topic I was thinking about recently as well. I'm still of the mindset that our academic standards are not affecting recruiting any more now than they were in the past. I think it's safe to say that some of these guys who cannot make the grades to get into ND would also not even consider ND in the first place because of the environment (or lack thereof). In modern times, ND has always existed as a school with both high academic standards and high athletic expectations. Students athletes are students first, athletes second. Just as ND will always exist in this manor, there will always be student athletes out there with the character to fit in at ND. Early enrollment is something I have mixed opinions on. I am never one for ND changing its rules or regulations if it can be seen as "lowering" it standards. I think early enrollment is not a step forwards or backwards, but basically a step sideways. It definitely will boost the performance of incoming freshmen. On the other hand, Notre Dame is a school that is set up to run a certain way. Freshman year is tailored to develping the student for maximum success over 4 years, hence the unbelievably high graduation rate. A student enrolling in January could be hurt by out-of-synch scheduling and adjustment problems. That being said, I think guys like Aldridge fully expect to face challenges such as this and are capable of handling it well. In the end, I think early enrollment should be allowed but on a case-by-case basis.
Guest Weisguy
academics hurting our recruiting is a bunch of bull, no one has been able to capture notre dame and sell it the way weis has since holtz was in town,, straight up they just couldnt convince people that they wanted to go to notre dame
Guest domehead
I agree you really do have to sell Notre Dame..and I also agree that think Weis is definetly doing just that..there are very few kids playing high school ball right now that do not know the history behind Notre Dame football..they are now starting to realize what CW is bringing back to Notre Dame..and the word is spreading fast...God only knows it ain't the mild winters thats got 'em lookin towards Soth Bend...God Bless the IRISH
Guest IrishTobey
I have a couple of thoughts on this 1) if people want to say ND loses kids b/c of the academic standards then you also have to mention the kids they gained BECAUSE of the academic standards. 2) Coaches make a huge difference with recruiting. Case in point Oklahoma. they had no talent, no direction, and other than some tradition was going nowhere. 2 years later they are national champions. USC and Miami were in the same boat. Alabama and Penn ST will be back too. 3) two of the biggest factors in recruiting are getting to the NFL and playing time. Right now Weis has 3 fat rings on his fingers and if you've watched ND at all playing time is available relatively early if not right away. Weis is selling this plus ND and the academics. Academics is a selling point and not an albatross and Weis gets it.
Guest IrishHog
CW has said numerous times that he wants smart kids. Not to knock any potential recruits out there, but I really feel this is why there aren't offers on the table for just any so-called "5-star" athlete. I trust CW knows how to win football games and will get the kids needed to accomplish this.

Guest IrishTobey
Hey Weisguy, Not to split hairs but I said "3 fat rings on his fingers" I never said he had fat fingers. However, I feel sick I forgot the ring he picked up with the Giants. Hopefully he'll get a fifth for that last finger like a National Championship ring

Guest IrishTobey
no big deal weisguy. I jumped the gun a little b/c I've been checking out some of the other sites and you can imagine what they are saying about coach Weis and how he looks. I know what you mean about being at work. I have about 30 seconds to jump on here and post and get back to work so I miss things. It does make the day go faster.

Guest Snatchy_McPants
I don't care how fat his fingers are, I know if I was lugging 4 Super Bowl rings on one hand, I'd have to be dragging that hand along in a wheelbarrow.
