Notre Dame is 11th in the Harris poll, 12th in the coaches' poll but no better than 21st in the six computer rankings. The Fighting Irish are not even among the best 25 teams in the country in two computer ratings.

What more can ND do?? Pitt, Purdue, Michigan, were all top 25 teams who turned out to be paper champions. At least Michigan is winning a little to help with the rankings but overall who has ND beat that is worth a crap?? Even MSU is sucking it up. Hopefully Tennesse beats Alabama and if ND and Michigan win out I would think the computer rankings will improve. Bottom line is that like or not, ND really hasn't beat a good team this year. Michigan is OK at best. Give ND credit for scheduling the big boys but those teams really do suck this year.

I agree Toby. "Round up the usual suspects." Loaded and biased computer programmers." :D I did't expect to be top 10 but 16 and not even in top 25 in the others?

.. a couple of seconds in the USC game and an overtime touchdown .. thats all that separates us from being in the top 5 right now .. we could have beaten either team but it just didn't go our way. The polls are way off .. the hold this week did show some respect though. I'd love to take on more undefeated teams at this point, line em' up I say!

there are plenty of games left though guys, we win out, you KNOW some of the teams ahead of us will lose, as long as we have 9 wins and are what 12th in the bcs poll we will get a game, bowl commitees know that any big bowl with Notre Dame will get just as much IF NOT MORE attention than the rose bowl this year.

From Fort Wayne paper.

The release of the BCS poll, which takes into account human and computer ratings, has stirred more talk of a playoff system. Weis has no preference.

From ESPN ?? Next Year???

The Irish will need help. Here's why:

Notre Dame is 16th in the initial BCS ranking. The Irish, 4-2, get an automatic bid if they finish 9-2 and in the top 12 of the final BCS ranking. The 9-2 looks possible. The Irish's remaining schedule includes BYU (3-3), No. 17 Tennessee (3-2), Navy (3-2), Syracuse (1-5) and at Stanford (3-2).

But that same lineup might prevent the Irish from moving up the four spots they need. That's because the computer rankings rank the Irish no higher than 22nd. According to Jeff Sagarin's various rankings, the decision to remove victory margin from the BCS ranking is contributing to the Irish's demise. Sagarin ranks Notre Dame 12th in his ranking that includes victory margin. He ranks the Irish first in strength of schedule. Yet in his ranking that removes victory margin, Notre Dame is only 23rd.

Coincidentally, if next season's rules were in place, the Irish would have a much better chance of getting an automatic bid. Under those rules, if Notre Dame -- or any conference champ -- is in the top 16 and ahead of a conference champion with an automatic bid, it also would get an automatic bid. This week, Big East leader West Virginia is 17th, one place behind the Irish.

The bottom line? Notre Dame is one loss away from the Gator Bowl. And, unless there's a big shakeup ahead, the Irish might be five wins away from the Gator Bowl, too.
