January 15, 200718 yr That writers a piece of crap: I'll tear him apart later today. I thought we were done with the Ty racism junk, guess not.
January 15, 200718 yr The guy has some decent points, especially with the blowouts, but where Tyrone failed was having a plan to remedy the blowouts whereas Weis is out recruiting the players and canning the coaches who are failing. Weis is flying around the country either recruiting or trying to find ways to become better. Willingham would just sit around and play golf and think the Notre Dame name would sell itself to recruits. Plus Willingham would never make any coaching changes among his assistants.
January 15, 200718 yr "And the players Davie left for Willingham were not as good as the players Willingham left for Weis, starting with Quinn." This quote alone makes that article a joke.
January 15, 200718 yr FWIW, here's the e-mail i sent to the writer of that stupid article: mr. wilner, how's ty doin' at washington? how's his recruting been at washington? i usually don't dignify these stupid hit pieces with a response but yours is so filled with misleading info and half-truths, it's ridiculous. fact:weis has lost one game where nd was favored and that was an overtime loss in his first year. willingham did lose to teams nd was favored to beat. and how quickly we forget that nd lead usc in '05 with seconds to go. not exactly a blowout, eh? oh, and please go back and quote me the articles talking about how quinn was an all-american candidate and future top draft pick before charlie arrived. i can save you the trouble; there were none! can you not grasp that charlie actually developed quinn and jeff? jeff never even saw the field under willingham!! fact: charlie has a better record than ty did after the same number of games. fact: charlie is about to land his second consecutive top 10 recruiting class, something willingham never did fact: charlie point differential in wins is far greater than willingham's was. you're wrong and if you had any decency, you would write an apology. i won't hold my breath, however.

Very nice Blackirish.Let us know if youhear anything back.
January 15, 200718 yr Good Stuff He was very opinionated and his facts were misconstrued over and over to his benefit but not towards reality.
January 15, 200718 yr Well done, blackirish. B4 I read your response, I felt the need to send him an e-mail as well: I read your article titled "Why does Weis get a golden pass?" and I can come to only one conclusion: you are a bigot. Obviously, you have a problem with Roman Catholics or Midwesterners or maybe white guys who were born in New Jersey. Coach Weis has very little in common with Coach Willingham. Regardless of what you say, he did inherit less talent than Willingham (check the records), his record is better and he is recruiting much better. Willingham was not a Notre Dame man -- that has nothing to do with being white or black. I am an African American and I was a Notre Dame man. The best man at my wedding was African American and he is a Notre Dame man. Willingham never truly understood the place and that's why he was so ineffective as a recruiter. About the only thing they have in common is this inability to win the big game (although Coach Weis beat a number 3 ranked Michigan team last year and came within an illegal "Bush Push" of beating number one ranked USC). Two years from now, if Coach Weis still can't win any big games, he's on the hot seat. Finally, do your research. Michael Haywood is the OC and is African-American. Now check out who the next DC will be. And stop being such a "hater."
January 15, 200718 yr Good Stuff He was very opinionated and his facts were misconstrued over and over to his benefit but not towards reality. well, georgia, i don't mind that he was opinionated; hell, most of us are! i just took him to task for the half-truths and such that littered his article.
January 15, 200718 yr Very nice Blackirish.Let us know if youhear anything back. he did e-mail back and tried to say he wasn't comparing ty and weis so much as ty to faust and davie. here's what i wrote in response. hope i didn't sound too pompous! mr. wilner, you must take me for a fool. you weren't "comparing willingham to weis?" really? i guess that why the headline was "why did davie and faust get a pass?" but it wasn't, was it?. yes, i know you don't write the headlines but clearly comparing weis to willingham was the point of the whole article. there is no double standard in the firing of willingham compared to faust and davie. they were all "fired!" yes, willingham was fired before his contract was up but that merely points to the good sense of the current administration and the changing times of college football. just ask alabama about changing times, for example. i am in poltics and am a progressive but i also know that sports is close to the only institution is all of american life that is a meritocracy. so, for you to say it's "not about wins and losses" is just about the most insulting thing you can say. do you believe us all to be so blind and naive? we would have loved to have willingham succeed at nd. don't you think that nd would bask in the glow of an african-american coach winning a national championship? but he did not succeed. i am sorry he did not but the fact that he is having trouble at washington is proof positive that he's just not a great college coach. and on this day, more than all others. i am judgimg a man on his accomplishments not on the color of his skin. sports in america is the one place where that's possible. but articles like yours do nothing to further that.
January 15, 200718 yr I actually agree with the title of the article. Then I read it. Wow, what a terrible article. Willingham got fired because he was an awful recruiter and because he wasn't winning the games he should have won. The reason he was fired early is because the program was going in a TERRIBLE direction. I'm not sure whether or not Charlie deserves to be on the pedestal that so many Irish fans hold him up on, but he certainly is moving the program in the correct direction.
January 15, 200718 yr I was going to give the article a rebuttal but you guys chewed it apart magnificently Good responses and thinking
January 15, 200718 yr what a frickin joke of a writer. I also am starting to hate Davie more and more as the day goes on. The writer seemed to base his article of those quote....think about it. Without those quotes he couldnt have written the whole second half.
January 15, 200718 yr this had nothing to do with black or white at notre dame i just feel this a hole is just trying to get name recognized or ala mark may. thats how you get popular, the hell with him . look what charlie has done, he has brought the irish back from the doldrums, he should achieve that magic moment in the next year or two , so we lose to Michigan and or usc so what, were improving with great students and were graduating them at the same time so back off this Ty/cw crap, go suck up to a tree.
January 15, 200718 yr Of all the stupid stuff in this article ( and it is rife with stupidity) perhaps the dumbest of all is the very end if we as fans and grads of ND are indeed giving Weis a "golden pass" then how will he be in trouble if we get blown out a couple of times next year? The only people who think (read "hope") he will be in trouble are these idiot media types. They are trying to make it happen. Give them something to feel smug about. F' them. me
January 15, 200718 yr Hey I just realised from Rick you know some of the hand wringing we have over Weis losing a couple recruits? We could be on here at DD whining over Ty's 2006 record and his recruits. Come to think of it "WOULD ANY OF US BE ON HERE AT DD OR ANY ND SITE IF WE HAD TY?"

January 15, 200718 yr Yeah, because I am sure having an article titled: "why did davie and faust get a pass?" really pushes your subscriber numbers up. (Sports Editorial Meeting) Editor: Ok, boys what do you have for me? Room is quiet. One reporter finally speaks up. Reporter: I'm working on a piece about Schottenheimer's problems in the playoffs. Editor: waving his hand as if pushing back the rest of an unwanted meatball sub Ahh, the American people are more sophisticated than that. They want substance! Something that harkens back to their childhood. Something that may even bring back painful memories. He breaks his gaze out the window and slowly walks back. He leans forward on the table. Editor: Well boys, what's it going to be? Jon Wilner meekly speaks up. Wilner: Well, sir, voice cracks I have begun doing some research comparing Tyrone Willingham to Gerry Faust and Bob Davie. The Editor slams his fist on the table. Editor: That's it! Run with it my boy! We've got a 10 PM deadline! The Editor slides back into his chair with a cigar that is now unlight. The room empties quickly only to be followed by the sounds of typewriter keys being abused in the most savory of fashion. Good stuff Black Irish. Keep up the good fight. [/i][/b]
January 16, 200718 yr I still cant believe he didnt consider Michigan @ ann arbor a big game. They had their QB and RB coming back along with Breaston, Avant, and a big time frosh prospect in Manningham. I guess they werent that good lol. Plus Michigan always has a good defense esp against the run and DW was awesome that game. Hard to believe with that many returnees that it wasnt a big game.
