OK Guys I am still catching heavy vibes/rumors and do say those all are whispered rumors of 3 coaches leaving. Those have been named. I will not speculate "firing" as in general there is a 3 year window coaches graduate to other programs. Despite our BIG losses ND has been highly successful. A small college is not looking necessarily for a National championship but would love the 19-6 ND track record.

Looking at our coaches Weis made a public joke of Haywood leaving. Personally I do not think he is ready for 'prime-time.' I recall the LSU game and Haywood was next to Charlie when the camera caught them. Haywood was talking, not into mike evidently saying something to Weis both side by side, while both were looking at the field. Weis moved away without a word. Read into that what you want, could have been incidental and innocent.

I do want to put forward Peter Vaas. This is NOT a fire. It seemed to me Weis needed a coach for the QB situation as hired and as he said, for Coach Cutt's Head coach experience which Weis did not have two years ago. Cutt was replaced by Peter Vaas, NFLE, HC and much experience in East Coast colleges HC etc. I love Pete, still seemed to me he was waaaaay over qualified just to be a QB Coach. Vaas daughter graduated ND recently. I was wondering if it's time for him to search out a better paying job with many openings now? Thoughts?

I'm not sure if he had a daughter graduate, but I know he has one daughter graduating in '08 and I'm pretty sure Kelly Vaas is '10. I would not want to let Vaas go, especially with Clausen, Frazer, Jones, and Sharpley to coach. I think if we let him go before NSD, it wouldnt look good for Clausen...in no way am I saying Clausen would decommit...it would just look bad with that type of QB coming in.

Clausen starts class in less than a week...

good point...forgot about that

does anybody know if vaas was the head coach at allegehny college in pennsylvania back in the 80's?

i think he was a coach at NH?

I've got a ? regarding EE and transferring. Say a kid goes EE to a school, he spends the semester there but doesn't like it. He decides he wants to go elsewhere, he hasn't signed an LOI so he is free to do as he wishes?

no, I believe he has to redshirt freshman year.

yeah its definately minter gone, oliver and then a 3rd. i think the 3rd is polian but i wouldn't be shocked if it lewis retired too. I don't think he'd ever be fired but he does plan on retiring soon.

I agree with tchris, I say Minter, Oliver, and Polian. Remember Weis first said that a new coach can impact special teams the earliest, still waiting... The d-line has been ripped a new one by every ND fan that I know... And I don't think anyone is real happy with the D schemes (I really don't know what other people think, just going out on a limb   )

the thing is our DLine isn't deep but it is definately talented.

A friend of mine claims through a source of his that Palermo's our new Dline coach. Seems strange considering he just signed with Tennesse Tech but I'm sure the pay is better at ND even to be an assistant and its obviously an upgrade. Just the timing is weird. I guess we'll all find out thursday

ND Hoops and A Charlie Sighting...

Less than eight minutes left in the Notre Dame-West Virginia game here and a couple quick notes with the Irish leading 50-43:

First, sophomore point guard Kyle McAlarney, as expected, is not playing. Freshman walk-on forward Tim Andree is also in street clothes.

It's a fairly sparse crowd tonight, but that should change next week when students return.

Also, we've spotted Notre Dame football coach Charlie Weis and family sitting in their typical spots. Normally, this wouldn't be noted except that Weis is supposed to be in San Antonio at a coaches convention. This further fuels speculation that something is amiss with the Notre Dame football program.

In a final note, Jody Schrage, the wife of new Notre Dame baseball coach Dave Schrage, died Tuesday afternoon in Houston, Texas after a six-week fight with cancer. She was 45. Condolences to the family.

The Rumor Mill is Pointing Toward a Change in Defensive Coaching at Notre Dame

Filed under: Notre Dame Football, NCAA FB Rumors

In the aftermath of the 2006 campaign, Irish fans can't help but feel disappointed by the end result of a very promising Irish team not living up to their preseason expectations. In fairness, 10-3 and a trip to the BCS is worlds ahead of where this team was the two years before Weis arrived, but it sitll looks like there are some unresolved issues that have kept this team from breaking into the top eschelon of teams.

The most obvious deficiency is the defense, which was unceremoniously ripped to shreds by the likes of USC, LSU, and Michigan, but also gave up copious amounts of yardage and points in victories against lowly North Carolina and Purdue. Most Irish fans have been calling for Defensive Coordinator Rick Minter's head since day one, and it looks like this season has brought Charlie Weis on board, too. Here's the nuggets of info we know:

Charlie Weis has called a press conference for Thursday (from Mike Frank at Irish Eyes)

UCLA DC Dewayne Walker was contacted by ND about his interest in the DC job at ND (from Irish Illustrated)

Assorted other rumors about levels of interest (complied by Blue Gray Sky)

If the Irish are able to make a big upgrade in defensive coaching, there's a chance we could see immediate results. Let's not forget how much of a travesty UCLA and Michigan's defenses were last year, and shakeups in the coaching staff immediately turned the two of them into elite unites practically overnight. We'll be sure to keep our ear to the ground as this develops

i think he was a coach at NH?

actually, i went to und.com and looked up his bio. he *was* the coach at allegheny college in the mid-80's. he recruited me to play there and he was super impressive and my mom *loved* him but i was young and arrogant and wanted to go DII not DIII, which allegheny was. but i never forgot how cool coach vaas was and always wondered if that was the same guy who was the qb coach at nd. small world, eh? :)

OK, here's what we've got (just to summarize):

DC - McCarney

DL - Palermo

LB/Asst. HC - Norton, Jr.

ST - Basaccia

not that it is relevant to this situation, but i found an old thread on a tampa bay bucs blog site chastising the hell out of basaccia as being less than innovative and essentially a really shitty special teams coach. like i said, i take most of these things with a grain of salt, but these folk were downright relentless...

OK, here's what we've got (just to summarize):

DC - McCarney

DL - Palermo

LB/Asst. HC - Norton, Jr.

ST - Basaccia

Are we working with the premise that ND is replacing 3 coaches or 4. Because if it is 3, then we cannot hire all four, b/c that would put us at 10, NCAA limit is 9. Or am I missing something.

I don't know what the actual number is. My thought is that McCarney would be coaching the DL, but I've heard Palermo's name on a few other sites. If I had to guess, I'd go McCarney (DC/DL), Norton Jr. (LB/AC), Basaccia (ST).

thanks

DL - Palermo

can some one tell me who Palermo is?

Palermo was the DL coach at Da U, and accepted a position at Tennessee Tech as the HC, though he is on the record as saying he had multiple offers and would take another if it panned out (prior to the TTU acceptance).
