What do you guys think about Luke Schmidt, since Asaph Schwapp will probably be here for three years if he gets the medical redshirt? I think he would be a great goaline back, like last year with Rashon Powers-Neal at H-back and Asaph at fullback. I really think he'd fit in at that, it seemed to work pretty well with Powers-Neal, if any of you remember the Purdue game. Thoughts?

i think luke schmidt will be a really good H-Back for the next four years. i really liked how CW used powers-neal when he was here and i think schmidt can be a much bigger impact for the offense, this kid has it all, size, power, running ability, and reciving. i wouldn't mind seing both schwapp and schmidt in the backfield together.

He's going to be great but he needs time to get stronger and improve his blocking but his upside is great.

I see nothing but upside for Luke. I personally like the physical back who can compliment the speedster. We should be good all the way around...for various offensive schemes for the next few years. Hope Robert Hughes commit's for this same reasons?

Is Schwapp even eligible for a redshirt?

Just a gut feeling, but you can forget about Hughes. He is going to ILL.

Yeah I'm pretty sure Schwapp can redshirt... Remember Rhema redshirted two games into the season.

Is Schwapp even eligible for a redshirt?

yes i believe he is. i think CW said that he could've come back later in the year but they both thought it was best to sit out the season to preserve a redshirt, simular to rhema mcknight last year.

Whoo, Schwapp and Schmidt would be the ultimate goal line set. I just remember the comparisons to Alstott when Luke was being recruited, and that's saying something, so I would see no reason why he won't be a valuable RB for us in the future.

Here are a couple formations I found that we used last year that Schmidt and Schwapp could be in:

Goal line

Two tight ends

Schmidt could also play a role in this formation:

The goal line formation worked very well for the Irish last year, as you can see here:

Unfortunately, last year, Rashon Powers-Neal was arrested sometime of the week after the Purdue for a DUI, and was suspended for the rest of the season. Hopefully this won't happen again with any of our players.

great stuff Irish! yeah i think CW is going to do a real nice job of using schmidt as the H-back. hopefully our OL will be able to open up some holes next year.

Very nice and professional Sean :D

I think Schmidt will add a very nice element to the offense. He might do the RPN thing, line up as the tailback on short yardage, but we do have Aldridge to do that. And maybe Hughes. I think Charlie sees Schmidt mostly as a FB, rotating with Schwapp. And what Schmidt can do is run the ball better than Schwapp, and catch the ball out of the backfield. He is a pure runner, whereas Schwapp is more of a pure blocker. The combo will be nice.

Good research GoIrish...so that's what happened to RPN. Wow, if that happened at any other school, he would not have been out the whole season. At Tha U you can throw helmet haymakers, and you only get a game

I wouldn't be too suprised if Luke was moved to OLB

His size speed ratio is solid and he played LB / S in high school at a very high level. Indiana and Purdue primarily recruited him as a LB and some of the ND coaches gave him that option when he came in, because of the perceived depth at FB ahead of him.

Either way, I think he will be utilized as a special teams ace as his primary roll next season...

Anyone heading down to the Sugar Bowl...I will be there in full Garb... The Royal St. James Hotel on St. James near bourbon street is back up and running and has cheap rates with decent rooms...

I don't see him moving to linebacker. ND recruited Schmidt mainly as a RB and I think he intends to stay as a RB. Also, Schmidt and Schwapp are the perfect combination of size, power, blocking ability, and strength. He will be great on the goal line. I just can't see him moving to linebacker, especially if we get Donald.
