Buckeyes still hope to land Martin

LaSalle recruit keeping Florida on his mind

Saturday, December 23, 2006

Gainesville, Fla.- Ohio State is looking for at least one more win over Florida before the national championship game.

With the Buckeyes' list of oral commitments for the 2007 recruiting class now at 13, the biggest in-state name still out there is defensive end Ben Martin of Cincinnati LaSalle.

Martin, who said Friday night he felt he had an "average" year on the field, isn't in a hurry even though he may be the player who can make Ohio State's

I've got a lot of things to consider right now," Martin said. "I'll take my time, and whenever I feel like it, I'll make my decision."

But his high school coach, Tom Grippa, said he doesn't expect Martin to remain uncommitted much longer. Grippa said he believes Martin is still considering all four of his finalists - Ohio State, Notre Dame, Florida and Tennessee.

"He's going home over Christmas break and he'll meet with his mom and then during this break he'll decide . . . " Grippa said. "In his mind, he might have it narrowed down to one or two, but he has not made that clear to anyone at LaSalle."

The Gators would love to snag Martin after the Buckeyes pulled two players out of Florida in the last two weeks. First, linebacker Brian Rolle of Imakolee High chose the Buckeyes over Florida, Wisconsin and LSU after an in-home visit from OSU coach Jim Tressel on Dec. 12, canceling a visit from Gators coach Urban Meyer that was scheduled for the next day.

Then, defensive back James Scott of Daytona's Seabreeze High shocked the crowd at his team's football banquet last Sunday with his announcement that he'd chosen Ohio State. He told the Daytona Beach News-Journal that he actually told Florida coaches a week earlier that he'd be a Gator before changing his mind.

Safety Major Wright is one more major Florida prospect, from Fort Lauderdale's St. Thomas Aquinas, who has apparently narrowed the field with the Buckeyes and Gators in the lead. But Martin, who played linebacker this season but projects as a defensive end, is the man of the hour, especially since defensive end Martez Wilson of Chicago, who once considered Ohio State, committed to Illinois on Thursday.

"It has everything to do with the fact that he's a difference maker," recruiting analyst Duane Long of Ohio High Magazine said of Martin. "Ohio State has good depth there, but he's the best defensive end I've seen in Ohio."

Martin is 6-5 and 230 pounds, with a 40 time of 4.5. Recruiting service rivals.com ranks him as the No. 37 prospect in the country, while scout.com ranks him 38th.

Nine of the 13 players to pledge to the Buckeyes so far are from Ohio, seven of them ranked among the top 13 players in Ohio, according to rivals.com. Safety Eugene Clifford is No. 1 on that list, with Martin at No. 2.

Long said defensive tackle Joseph Barksdale of Michigan and offensive lineman Anthony Davis of New Jersey are the two out-of-state players still highest on Ohio State's list, and they both would fill positions of need. The class so far is high on speed and small on size, with six defensive backs, two receivers and two running backs.

Long believes if the Buckeyes can add Martin, Barksdale and Davis, the Buckeyes would finish with a class ranked among the top 20 in the country.

Credit to II, ND is supposedly looking much better with Ben Martin.

I hope so Broke.Plus Martin coming home for a visit could help us more.

I wasn't sure if from ND's perspective the article was news but it was from an Ohio newspapers point of view. It also gave some info on how Ohio and the Gaters were matching up with us recruiting wise.

I don't know how difficult La Salle's college prep is, but IE puts Martin's GPA at 3.4. Given that Weis' pitch to the smart guys from Catholic parochial schools seems to be working this year (Smith, Tate, Trattou, etc.) and last year (Wenger, etc.), maybe it's coming down to that these type of guys are receptive to ND's value system and way of doing business.

Just a hunch, but I wouldn't be surprised to see Martin as Irish.

OSU inisiders have the belieft that it is:

1. OSU

2. FLA

3. UT

4 NOTRE DAME

A buddy told me that last night that is a big OSU fan so it would make it all the better taking him out of Ohio when noone expects it.

I don't know if its been posted here before but there are a couple of guys that host an ND radio show out of Ohio but also broadcasts it on the internet at NDradioshow.com. They have a guy that calls in occasionally and has some stuff to say about Martin. It sounds promising but not sure.

Worth a listen. They have recorded previous shows on the site. Listen to the last one, Dec. 21. It also has Lemming on there for a while.

The one guys pretty cynical but just cause he's so diehard.

One of our DD guys is in radio and puts out his weekly ND and football newsletter. He's quite good and I enjoy his newsletter. Paul are you around? :) I don't want to give out his addy without permission.

Yea SJ, I'm here.

I think I plugged this before on the general board, but if you want to get in for the last batch of predictions for the season, send me a pm with your e-mail address, and I'll add you. I just kind of have some fun with the sport we love so much, college football.

:D I didn't want to give it out ital without approval. I highly recommend his newsletter, no spam and really great news. I did tell him I would have to censor a few words he uses ahahahahahaha

Please check him out it's good I recommend it

No contacts here but I did hear from multiple people that Florida and OSU are the 2 main teams and that Florida is nowhere near the longshot people may think. Still say Buckeye though.

Yea, I've been seeing a lot of talk about the Gators being in Ben's top 2. I never really got my hopes up for Ben, considering Ohio State pretty much gets whoever they want in their state.

Minter has strong ties in Cincy. Don't count us out yet.

Word around my neck of the woods is that Ben is a "lead pipe lock" to OSU. Not even a chance for us according to most of the Buckeye fans around here.

....though, they also believe every city has to quit sellling bottled beer a month before big games out of fear of people getting smacked with one for saying anything other than "Go Bucks".

I think Big Ben's Irish.

Is there another "big-ticket" recruit in the country this year that everyone has a different opinion on? There is zero consensus about this guy...

The fact is that no one knows what is going on with this kid because he does not tell anyone what he is thinking. I think he could go to anyone of his top four.

tOSU fans just assume this because of Tressel and the current level of success, but this is not some ted ginn feeder school. A catholic kid from cincy, we used to always get these kids, so I think we have as good a chance as anyone!

Good point Kramer, I think that's what is giving a lot of us hope. IMO if Minter were able to get Donald, Martin, Smith, and Tate when all is said and done, then that will save his ass and give him at least one more year. Also, broker has been confident in this kid from the beginning, so that's just another reason to believe that we've got a fighting chance with him.
