Mark May is an idiot. We all know that.

He is a Notre Dame Hater. No shortage of those.

But now he is also actively plotting our destruction. That is something completely different.

On ESPN today, I watched his May Day awards. He gave out four: two positive and two negative. Ohio State's Pittman received the "Underhyped Award" and Carroll received the "Coach that Wins Big Games" Award (too bad UCLA and Arizona weren't big games). No huge problems with those positive picks.

But now we come to his negative picks, and he spent both of them on...

you guessed it, Notre Dame. For most overhyped player -- Brady Quinn. For the coach who can't win the big game -- Coach Weis.

The Brady Quinn pick is almost legitimate, but it also seems like piling it on to a guy who has endured a lot of disappointment this year.

The shot at Coach: completely undeserved. He says 0-4 against the top 10 teams. Calling Mr. May, what was Michigan ranked when we beat them in Coach's second game? Is the new coach supposed to just start whipping top ten teams right out of the gate? Weren't those 4 losses against the best teams in the country, not just top ten teams? Does Coach get any credit for going 9-3 and 10-2 after abysmal seasons under Willingham?

So why would Mark May waste half of this personal segment attacking Notre Dame. Why spend two of his picks, his only two negative picks, on us? Even though he hates us, isn't the man smart enough to use his picks a little more creatively and constructively than that? Are you telling me that there is no other coach out there losing the big games? I guess I missed it when Northwestern beat those top ten teams this year or when Coach Bowden upset Florida.

Here is his sick, twisted and insidious motive -- he is actively recruiting against us. Yes, Mark May has been given airtime by ESPN to actively recruit against us. He sees the strides Coach is making, he knows the next couple of months could see us accumulate another top ten recruiting class. And he is actively trying to stop that.

Shame on you ESPN if Coach Holtz isn't given equal airtime for rebuttal. Personally I am boycotting anything on ESPN that has Mark May without offsetting him with a healthy dose of Coach Holtz.

Mr. May, a word to the not-so-Weiss:

you don't tug on Superman's cape, you don't spit into the wind, you don't pull the mask off the lone Lone Ranger and you don't mess around with ND.

It is what it is, until ND wins a "BIG GAME" people will take their shots. Mark May is like any other reporter "ANOYING". ND is the most noticeable university in the world. When you say college football first thing to come out of peoples mouths is ND, hate it or love it. This is america and he has a right to his opinion just like you do, even if you don't agree with him.

Opinion is fine. Piling it on and actively working against ND is another thing. And, hey, he can have his opinion; but should Notre Dame fans be supporting him or the network that gives him airtime?

I personally don't think that the recruits care one bit what Mark May (of all people) have to say. He is totally irrelevant to college football. He just pisses off ND fans. To be honest, if our recruits are not coming here because of what a mediocre analyst at ESPN says...then they aren't ND men and don't belong here.

2lakes: Good Post.

Ahaha I saw your 'rant' as you termed it over in General.

Your correct. The major fault lies with ESPN. Mark May is nothing but a talking head similar to Howdy Doody. ESPN's Production Staff must sit down each week and go over the sports news they will be reporting weekly. These are updated every hour. They then will sit down and decide what to discuss with one eye upon the TV ratings, in some cases BOTH eyes.

Picture this conversation in the Production meeting. "OK guys today we do Howdy Doo.. I mean Mark May's awards. Let's see two positive.. Those, who the hell cares who gets them as no one pays attention and who cares about his awards. Now two more "NEGATIVE" I think if How...I mean Mark trashes ND as usual ratings shoot up besides we are ESPN and they are NBC."

Now you could have a bright up and coming young guy on the Production staff to pipe up...."But I thought ESPN stood for honest sporting news? I thought ESPN had integrety?" You could but how long do you think the young guy would last at ESPN?

haha, 2lakes, I hear what you are saying but honestly don't worry about it. Mark May is an idiot and utterly embarrassing that a network as great as ESPN would employ him. Honestly. We all know he hates ND and so be it, he is no different than Dennis Dodd or any other clueless media member, but where May crosses the line is the senseless rants he has made in the past. Particularly, when Ty was fired. I remember his verbally attacking ND for making a racist decision and firing Ty, apparently he didn't take into account that whole 21-15 record thing and the fact that Ty would rather be golfing and making pizza commercials than working hard and recruiting. He also blasted ND for giving Charile the extension last season 7 games in, and again bitched about racism and why Ty had not been treated similar for his 8-0 start. The man is an idiot and thats all that has to be said. Lee Corso may consistently pick against the Irish but its more in fun and innocently. May is just a hater that is pissed that ND kicked his ass for 4 years when he was at Pitt and he is completely insignificant. If he were a media member and interviewed students or coaches I guarantee you half the time they'd tell him to piss off and get the hell out of their faces. Mark, you're a loser, congrats.

lol, a player that is among the final 3 for the heisman has been a dissapointment... lol.. mark may kills me

The most recent thing may has done was become the worst analyst on ESPN after Trev Alberts got canned. This guy is an idiot. I only wish Coach Holtz was a little less polite and ripped into him on occasion. When Mark May offered him that USC ticket i was shouting at my television set. Mark May offering an I-Told-you-so to a hall of fame coach. I guess when you go to armPITT it's once a loser, always a loser.

Ouchie Nd2   (Target hit and destroyed)

Sir John:

You made a very interesting point. NBC is Notre Dame network (at least for the next couple of years) so maybe ESPN calculates that it is most lucrative to be the Anti-ND Network.

Question: why doesn't Notre Dame have its own network? They could do a bang-up job on sports throughout the country, just like ESPN. But then they would also try to cover all of ND's athletic events from volleyball to soccer to baseball. I personally would have liked to have seen a few more lady soccer matches and couple more basketball games. When ND does not have an event they could cover other sports, do sports shows, classic games, etc... I bet a network like that could steal at least 25% of ESPN's viewers at least part of the time.

PS: how do we quote another reply so that it says "so-and-so said" then with the quote in highlights? I always end up having to cut and paste, then us the "quote" button.

2lakes press the quote button in the upper right hand corner of the post you want to quote

then when it goes to the screen where you would normally post a reply it should show up in the box quoted, then you can type after it, just like you would normally when posting

One last rant about May and ESPN. I do think the stuff on TV affects the recruits. Maybe not as much as the visits, but I would say it has a cumulative effect (like radiation poisoning).

What tv station do you think these young jocks watch day in and day out? Besides a little Bill O'Reilly on Fox, I'm guessing it's a steady diet of ESPN. Just like you and I. This stuff gets drummed into their heads, along with the lifestyle pointers they get from music videos and reality shows. And the steady drumbeat of negative stories about ND is more than annoying, it's a small-scale propoganda war against us.

So... maybe it's time to go to the mats, men.

May was put on purposely as an anti-ND guy to complement Holtz. If ESPN puts on Holtz and a neutral guy then all the ND-haters throughout the country would complain up a storm. Fact is, ND-bashing sells because most people hate ND (the rest of us love ND!)....so Mark May is good schtik. Plus I get the feeling that he takes great pleasure in pissing us ND fans off....I don't really sweat him. Actually Craig James comes across as more genuinely anti-ND than May.

I would venture to say that some of these kids are poor to the point thier parents cant afford cable so their not watching a whole lot of ESPN. Their coach's are major influences in their lives and will steer them to certain colleges more often than not. Look at Ted Ginn Sr. and Cleveland Glenville! That school has become the minor leagues for Ohio St. Off subject by the way I thought it was pretty interesting that Butch Reynolds was Chris Wells speed coach during his high school career and then when Wells goes to Ohio St. Reynolds ends up as the Ohio St. football speed coach. Hmmmmm interesting! Anyways more often than not it seems like the flavor of the month or the popular school at the time ends up with the bigger recruits!

We cant forget that ESPN/ABC has a vested interest in bashing ND, and they love to do it because it gets ratings.

Nice kramer I agree. I think I am throwing in the towl for honest sports journalism. It is vested interest. OK! We should push NBC to jazz us up all the way or get out of our contract.

Do you know what is really crazy if you look at ND schedule against lets say tOSU and Meatchicken it's practically the same, but for some reason ND schedule is weak but the tOSU and Meatchicken aren't. I'm not saying that ND was the toughest of the toughest cause they did have some cup cakes on their, but dam all three schools played alot of the same teams. And save me that service academy crap cause AF almost beat Tenn at Tenn. We beat UCLA and people were like "YOU BARELY BEAT A WEAK UCLA TEAM" but when UCLA beat SoCal all of a sudden it's a very good UCLA team. But SoCal is still a great team?. I guess when your ND even when you win you lose. Just another sign that ND is back!!!!!!!!!!

couldn't agree more ny
