Looks like Carlson is out until the bowl game.

Β

How do you guys think this affects ND?

Β

I really think this is the guy we could least afford to lose on offense outside of Brady, because I just don't think we have a player that is ready to replace him. He kept the defenses honest and helped take away over the middle coverage on Rhema and Shark.

Β

I like that Freeman did get a TD pass though yesterday. I guess it is possible that he will be able to fill in for Carlson but I dont really know what to expect from him. We will see I guess.

wow, his injury didn't seem that serious... he walked off the field under his own power and seemed to be fine..

I just hope he comes back for a 5th year.

i dont think ND is going to need Carlson for the Army game, but it would be nice if he was able to return for the USC game.

i think ND can use the Army game to see what Freeman is like. Freeman is a 5th year senior.

i thought i read somewhere that Weis was impressed with what Freeman has shown in the last 2 years in practice, but i dont remember where i saw it.

i dont have anything to go by, but i think ND will be OK with Freeman. i think he will do better than most expect him to and he will step up with Carlson out. people will be going wow who is this Freeman guy?? ..just a feeling i guess.

Β

maybe with this injury to Carlson it would benefit him to come back for a 5th year

how do you guys think Reuland would do? i thought some recruiting guy said he was the best TE hes seen coming out of HS?

I think Reuland can and will be a stud for us but I don't know if he can do it this late into his freshman season. I'm stoked thinking about a double TE set of Reuland and Ragone in a couple seasons, but I'm not sure at this point Reuland is a better player than Freeman offers to us. With that said, Charlie should get him some extended playing time vs. Army too see if he can play for us vs. USC in 2 weeks. And just imagine, if Carlson comes back for his 5th year next year! Can you say "Tightend U"?

since Reuland hasnt played yet this season as a freshman would Weis play him now? if Weis doesnt play him at all this season wouldnt he then be eligible for a 5th season?

with only 2 games left i think Weis would likely stick with Freeman

Reulands seen a few plays this year on special teams that I know and been confirmed. Yeatmen? More a blocker? I'd still hope Carlson returns and be a Fasano- Samar deal again. Freeman was excited and all to get his TD, but realisticly he is 5th year and has but 2 regular games left. That TE is not such a worry 2007 as is the trench guys we lose.

I'm fairly sure that Reuland has indeed played this season already. He doesn't have any catches but I believe he's taken some snaps. That alone disqualifies him from a 5th year. But I could be wrong, just thought I read it somewhere.

he has played in a lot of games. yesterdays for sure.

Reuland has played.

Β

As far as Carlson. I have to be selfish and hope he comes back for a 5th year. We need leadership and skill. He's had 46 passes 621 yards for 4 TD's (Almost got many more.) Potential All American, has caught the NFL Scouts eyes. Two games out minimum? Lowers NFL draft. A th might be benificial barring injury for a higher draft. This does not take into account say a girlfriend/wife waiting in the wings, a future job etc or his personal finaces holding off another year.

If Carlson stays for a 5th year, we will have him, Reuland, Yeatman, and Ragone.

Will Yeatman has played in more games than Reuland this year, though.

yea freeman slides over and fils the recieving tight end roll and yeatman becomes the blocking tight end

Β

i really have faith in freeman all signs out of camp were that he could really play and made great strides, sure he hasnt caught passes but charlies offense isnt built for two tight ends catching, one primarily blocks the other is receiving

Β

he caught a very nice ball against air force, i think the army game will give him a chance to settle in and i think he will perform very well

Β

more important to me is can JA keep improving, he ran really hard this last game, he needs a good game against army, because against USC that four minute offense may become very important and aldridge is perfect for it

Knee injury sidelines tight end Carlson 2-4 weeks

Β

November 12, 2006

BY VAUGHN MCCLURE

AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. -- John Carlson, Notre Dame's starting tight end, will be out two to four weeks with a right knee injury, Irish coach Charlie Weis said Saturday.

Β

Β

Β

Carlson is likely to miss the final two regular-season games, but Weis expects him back for a bowl game.

Β

''My first report was he was going to be gone for the year,'' Weis said. ''I was encouraged because when they gave me the initial report, I said, 'Oh, no.'''

Β

Carlson went down late in the second quarter. He was helped to the sideline and had his knee immobilized in a full leg brace. He was on the sideline in the second half in warmups.

Β

''I'm being practical saying it's a long shot that we'll have him back for USC,'' Weis said, ''but we'll have him back for whatever game we end up playing at the end of the season.''

Β

Before the injury, Carlson caught a one-yard touchdown pass from Brady Quinn in which he toed the sideline while draped by an Air Force defender. It was one of several remarkable catches this season that have caught the eyes of NFL scouts.

Β

Backup tight end Marcus Freeman caught a 23-yard touchdown pass from Quinn in the third quarter.

Β

Irish offensive tackle Ryan Harris, Carlson's roommate, was a bit down about Carlson's injury.

Β

''I don't know if I landed on him or what,'' Harris said. ''We were over there on the same side. I looked back, and he was on the ground.

Β

''He's having such a great year. It's unfortunate that that happened.''

Β

Carlson wasn't the only Irish player to get banged up. Guard Bob Morton left the field favoring his left shoulder, and cornerback Terrail Lambert had a right ankle injury. Weis said Morton's injury was just a stinger, and Lambert said his ankle was fine.

Β

HEAVY HITTER: Safety Chinedum Ndukwe's 22 tackles were not only a career high, but also the most by an Irish defender since Bob Golic had 22 against Pittsburgh in 1978.

Β

Did Ndukwe think he had that many tackles?

Β

''My body feels like that,'' he said.

Β

RECORD SETTER: With three catches Saturday, wide receiver Rhema McKnight has 158 career receptions to rank first all-time in school history. McKnight passed Tom Gatewood (157, 1969-71) to achieve the record.

Β

Β

FASHION STATEMENT: A number of Notre Dame players decided on the old-school, high-socks look: Quinn, McKnight, David Grimes, Tom Zbikowski and Jeff Samardzija, to name a few.

Β

''Obviously, due to the weather, we wanted to wear some sort of high white socks,'' Quinn said. ''We didn't have the ones we would have liked to wear, like our blue ones. So we tried to improvise and pull them as high as we could.''

Β

NO BLOCK PARTY: Carl Gioia had two extra-point attempts blocked -- a srise to some, but not to those familiar with Air Force's history. The Falcons now have blocked 93 kicks all-time, punts included.

Β

The Falcons must have put a scare into Gioia, who missed an extra point wide right in the fourth quarter.

Β

Β

NOTABLE NUMBERS: Quinn now has thrown 223 passes without an interception, the longest active streak in Division I-A. The NCAA record is 271 by Fresno State's Trent Dilfer.

Β

β€’ Trevor Laws' blocked field goal in the second quarter was Notre Dame's fourth blocked kick this season. Laws has two, as does Derek Landri.
