Cons and pros of losing Benn

Looking for a silver lining:

Losing Benn hurts, at least partially because he is a phenomenal athlete and receiver who would likely have started as a freshman, but also because he was a silent commit earlier. Losing him to a school like Illinois is okay from a certain point of view; at least we won't see him in a Trojan or Wolverine uniform. But it could also hurt us in recruiting because we compete constantly with Illinois for recruits from Chicago.

The biggest potential positive to this situation is that losing Benn makes us potentially more attractive to Joe McKnight and, perhaps, Gerald Jones. With Little and Kamara on board, we have our big, physical receivers. We've all expressed tremendous longing for a speed burner--someone who can really stretch the defense. We really don't have anyone who can do this (perhaps outside of DJ Hord and maybe Munir Prince), and the offense doesn't absolutely depend on such a player; but it would be really nice to possess such a threat.

If we land McKnight, we'll forget Benn quickly. Regardless, Little and Kamara, not to mention Ragone, look to fit well into Weis's system. Jay Smith is still a possibility. We'll be just fine.

finally a sensible post, free of flaming on Benn. Now I too am more focused on Wilson and Hughes. aka Wilson, I still dream of Wilson/Donald. Benn choosing Illinois is an obvious blow, he was our top target at that position. On top of that, I really believe we have a mediocre shot at best with McKnight. which isn't to say we're not in there, i just think theres too much gap to make up. it makes me wonder how we'll use the scholarship.

The good news is: it sounds like our WR recruiting for next season is off to a very good start. So this is being fixed quickly.

The bad news is: Benn is the starting WR on my NCAA Xbox team. He's a heisman hopeful and yet, I'm obviously going to have to cut him.

Hmmm...maybe this should be http://www.arreliusbenn.com/forum...but all the posts i'read and written are just saying that he chose an inferior program, and that ND is still golden no matter what a single recruit does. And if you dont believe me...go back and read what i wrote about benn when people were calling him stupid for not being eligible for ee...I really can't see how an irish fan can really be sick of people expressing their distaste with the loss of a top recruit by the hands of negative recruiting.

Iwould completely agree with your post...a couple days from now...but the kid committed 45 MINUTES AGO...thats like calling a kid a crybaby at the reception after his cousin's funeral. i mean no disrespect, but guys like us who have less than 100 posts shouldn't be callign out others who may have thousands of posts, especially when nothign horrible has been said. All i can say is let people vent...that is why people blog.

Hey, so we don't land Benn, disappointed? Yeah.

But I'd have to almost think that when Benn chose Illinois, that it actually made some other kids day knowing that he now has an open slot in South Bend.

I also believe that Coach and the rest of the staff have this all under control.

we land Emeka yesterday and Little today. A great week for the future of Notre Dame football.

We still have National Championships upon the horizon.

Excellent summation Jersey. For the one that goes elsewhere, three will come. For sure we have our receivers. Hopefully Hughes and Allen will add to our running corp. Imagine a big physical group of receivers, and running backs who continue to pound away...never growing tired. Two more offensive linemen and we should be ready for a serious run at the National Championship for years to come.

What was, was. What is going to be...is going to be!

i'm not calling anyone out, you're too sensitive haha. i think i'm entitled to my opinion, however many posts i have. i appreciate that you didn't go crazy, but it's not like i went after anyone. i just think it's sort of dumb to get that bitter about losing a kid.

You want a pro about today?

Look at what Scout has to say in its profile of greg little...

Tremendous athlete that can play running back, linebacker, safety, or wide receiver in college. Size/speed/strength combination is off the charts, and a great team leader as well.

I think that we will be fine.

I really think that Charlie and the staff dropped Benn, or at least figured they wouldn't get him, a few weeks ago.

Part of my thinking is how we apparently went hard after Joe McKnight recently, and told him he could play WR (which he liked).

Also, the rumors of the staff not knowing about his announcement make it seem like they weren't counting on him. I guarantee Charlie is upset with Benn for reneging on his silent, regardless of if it was because of EE or not. Benn has been messing around and should've committed to us awhile ago. I bet Charlie's patience ran thin.

My optimistic prediction was wrong, and I'm pissed Benn isn't coming to ND. But good riddance. He made a poor life decision, but hey, he's only 18. I wish him luck (he's gonna need it).

We NEED Armando Allen.

In my opinion, I don't see Benn not coming to ND a lost. I've thought all along that he is not a team player and wants all the glory. Your not going to win a NC without teamwork. I think this will also help us get those two (2) kids we have offered for next year Michael Floyd and Dan Buckner. It will be nice to have talent spread over four years when and if they come in. Like everyone cheers GO TEAM not Go Benn
