Tale of the Tape:

Angeli- Most Experienced. Leadership mojo. Accurate. mobile enough, Not fast. Arm is a C+ velocity wise

Minchey. Most athletic B+ ARM, mobile. Not tested accuracy wise. No game experience

Carr- Famous name, coached by everyone who is anyone. good spring game film, no game experience, mobile enough, rivals Mincheys arm velocity

My prediction

Everybody wants Carr but gets Angeli. Leadership and experience are hard to replace.

I won't predict. All three need to get through the spring, and it will stay open competition through fall camp. Have to see how Carr's injury heals and whether it affected his motion and velocity.

How will Denbrock cater the offense to these three, or who can run the full package or close to it that they envision? Angeli has the most experience, but as mentioned his velocity and arm strength may be lacking, not to mention he has zero pocket awareness and will eat sacks.

One thing we have to figure out going forward to round out our offense is being able to convert better on 3rd down from 6-10+ to go. We were atrocious as a third down team all season long. One 5 yard penalty or lost yardage pretty much killed a lot of drives last season, we had no answers if we were behind the chains. Defenses could just drop 7-8 into zone knowing that we had very low conversion %.

Hard to predict especially when you look at all of the factors above. I think CJ Carr gets the nod because of the hype. Hard to say what he could bring to the offense without any game reps. I would not be surprised at all though if Angeli or Minchey win the job either. If i had to rate them in order on who my heart wants to see I would Go Carr, Minchey and Angeli third. No knock on Angeli, dude proved his worth multiple times but everything in me wants to see a homegrown guy for multiple years.

GO IRISH!

I did vote Angeli, but it could very well be any of them. I only said Angeli because of his experience and proving himself each time he goes in. His pocket awareness isn’t good, but that’s something they could help him with. It will be a very tough battle for all of them, which is good because we all know it will make them better!

I think it’s CJ Carr’s job to lose. He has more upside than Angeli and probably Minchey. My guess is that he would have to be clearly beaten out by Angeli or Minchey for CJ not to start. If, for instance, Angeli/Minchey and CJ are pretty even going in to fall camp, CJ will be the favorite to start when everything is taken into consideration - offensive fit, potential upside, transfer portal etc.

I'm thinking someone transfers after spring ball, most likely Angeli, but maybe Minchey.

I doubt Angeli starts. I think Carr is the early favorite, but Minchey is the dark horse. Minchey has the athletic ability that the others do not and he also throws a very pretty ball similar to Carr. I do think he could surprise some people, but I just do not think Angeli has a shot.

This is the first year in a WHILE that ND has a TRUE open competition for QB1. For a long time, the QB1 was pretty easy to figure out for the last handful of years regardless of the "coach speak" being said about a QB competition.

2024: Leonard
2023: Hart
2022: Buchner (everyone knew he was the favorite over Pyne)
2021: Coan
2020: Ian Book
2019: Ian Book
2018: Wimbush (he lost his job to Book a couple games into the season, but was the expected start)
2017: Wimbush was the new hot thing that everyone expected to the starter
2016: Kizer

Feels like the staff favors Carr. I think ND will end up starting Angeli for the start of the season based on his experience and because they start with Miami and A&M. I feel that for Angeli to be a realistic option, the staff will have to be much more confident in the OLs ability to pass block.

I could care less who it is. I honestly just hope that one of these young men separate themselves not just to the coaches but to their teammates. Leave no doubt. That is what I am hoping for.
