I think most (if not all) of us are pleased with results of Sam Hartman to this point. I know the season isn’t over but he has been a stable and experienced addition to the most critical position on the offense. If the rest of the season plays out with these same outcomes, does (should) we look for the same in the transfer portal for next year or stick with Angeli, Minchey and Carr and trust in our recruiting and coaching? I guess it really depends on who’s out there? Curious to see your thoughts. I would like to think we have faith in the recruiting and coaching but Parker is also a huge β€œ?” at this point as well.

  • I understand your points. But if you bring in a transfer QB for the third out of four years, and you do that early enough in the year to allow that QB to become familiar with the system, I think odds

  • I would say no at this point simply because I do not see a quality QB entering the portal this year. The SMU QB doesnt interest me, ND would be better off just building what they have. If a very

  • Maybe I am just too set in my ways (old dog, new tricks) but it seems to me like there are bigger issues at play if the staff still needs to dip into the xfer portal at this point. There are 2 guys on

So I completely agree the desired plan is to become TE and QB University. What Β QB in ND history besides Joe and Theisman were coached to be or were coached by top deck talent? Asking for a friendΒ

Arguably Quinn and Clausen were coached well under Weis.

People forget Clausen's 2009 season because the team was garbage, but he had one of the best seasons in ND history, He had a 68% completion percentage, 3722 yards, 8.8 yards/attempt, 28-4 TD-INT ratio, and a 161.4 rating. And he had turf toe for the majority of the season (believe he hurt it against Michigan State in the third game).

Quinn's best year was 2005, where he had a 64.9% completion percentage, 3919 yards (which I believe is the all-time ND record), 8.7 yards/attempt, 32-7 TD-INT ratio, and a 158.4 rating.Β

I just wish Clausen, Tate, Floyd, and Rudolph could have been paired with a defense coached by Elko, Lea, or Freeman. Imagine the 2009 offense with the 2023 defense. ND would be in serious contention for a national championship.

If we bring in a portal QB, I hope it’s not to develop him as a pro style QB, which I feel like ND did-to its detriment-with Hartman.

This is another reason why we need an experience OC, who can assess his QB’s strengths and weaknesses and call plays-and demand performance- accordingly.

Hartman never had the arm strength to throw downfield without being able to stride into the throw, but he was throwing off his back foot all the way including Β the Stanford game.

Β

Maybe Joe Burrow, Matthew Stanford and Josh Allen can make that throw, but Sam Hartman-even if he thought it was necessary to get him NFL ready, surely can’tΒ

why even bother recruiting QBs...just take 5th year transfers every year.

Well this is the dilemma of the portal, NIL, etc for every team going forward.Β  You could gain or lose all the time and have to account for that with recruiting HS, players from other schools, and trying to sell kids into staying from your own team.

It's a complex situation that I don't think some people understood when they opened this can of worms.Β  The only thing a good staff can do is be completely up front and forthright about their goals.Β  Our job is to be successful and we will pursue individuals who we feel can help achieve that desired goal.Β  At the same time you have the freedom to leave should you feel your talent and goals lie elsewhere.

If everyone dispenses with the concept of loyalty on all sides, and makes decisions from a purely business standpoint then it makes sense.Β  I don't like it for a number of reasons, but I have zero say in all of it.Β  This is the bill of goods that everyone was sold on in the name of fairness, and more will follow going towards a club/pro model.

This is one thing I am concerned about, Leonard is a quality QB, I wont argue that, but I also do not think he is a no brainer 1st round draft pick either.

If QB recruits keep seeing ND take transfers, they will think they do not have a legitimate shot at starting and wont commit to ND. QBs greatly effect recruiting classes as well.

Especially when ND is constantly taking good QBs from the portal, not elite QBs.Β Β

Exactly how I felt too! πŸ˜‚

How about ND starts a high upside freshman who can grow into a 3 year stud, and give them an actual natty window in 2025 and 2026.Β

Instead of playing mediocre/goodish QB whack-amole.Β

You'll get your wish in 2025 with either RS So Minchey or RS Fr Carr.
