@Big23Head inspired this thread.

ND has a pressing QB need. I know there's a thread about QBs in the portal and I don't even know how to research the portal yet

Devin Leary

Hudson Card

Frank Harris

Brennan Armstrong

@OKelleyIrishadded Grayson McCall

Cade McNamara- Michigan

In the spirit of the QB Eye test thread, I'd like you guys to respond with QBs that pass your test.

Not meant to be a shot at Drew Pyne or Buchner. They have and will always have a roster spot. BUT a roster spot will be available and then ND's program is built on competition.

I’m sure more names could pop up for a potential transfer QB. Leary seems to have some legs. Coming off a torn pec too. Card is a possibility for ND to reach out if he graduates. May choose to stay south. Harris is a random wildcard. Smaller conference, could he translate to the power 5. Armstrong has fallen off this year but had a coaching change. Him or the scheme and could he restore at ND.

I’ll go with Leary. Really like his highlights and he’ll be familiar with most of the teams ND plays.  Lots of quick reads from him and didn’t seem to have many deep throws but he was accurate. Of course it was a highlight real so who knows how consistent that is.

Armstrong would compliment the run game very well but how soon before he gets hurt and we are back to Pyne or Buchner?

Any of the four would seem to be an improvement. Just give the team someone who can be a consistent passing threat to make defensives honest and boy that O could be something scary.

Of these 4, first and second choices would be Hudson Card and Brennan Armstrong, imo not much space between them. Third would be Devin Leary. Frank Harris didn't really move the needle for me.

Ideally we find someone like Joe Burrow lurking around the transfer portal. Hard to believe OSU let him slip through their grasp. But they were all in on Justin Fields.

We can add guys if needed too. Thanks for such a good list!

Anyone 6’3, decent arm, mobile enough to not be a statue, and can complete 68 percent of their throws. Is that asking too much?

Sounds like Coan.

Besides the being the statue part. Need a little more mobility than that.  It much. But more please.

Based only on these videos, I’d say Leary by a lot.  He completed all kinds of different passes, spread the ball around, and did it against Clemson and other legit teams.

Looking at Card, he was playing against a bad team and most of the highlights were of Bijan Robinson, not Card.  Also most of his passes went to wide open players, so I can’t tell if he can make a tough throw.  Also, I’m in Austin, and Card never did the job.  This is from last February:

https://longhornswire.usatoday.com/2022/02/18/texas-football-quarterback-hudson-card-quinn-ewers-longhorns-bleacher-report-battle-competition-2022-season-starter/

Harris at UTSA seems like a star in the minor league, but his video didn’t show me anything to suggest he’s waiting to emerge on a big stage.  His throws seem a bit wild, too.

Armstrong just looks …. pretty good.  A few terrible passes that should have been INTs, but he hits guys in stride, and I definitely want that.  He’s probably my second choice.

I'd go with Leary out of those four. But I'd prefer DJU over everyone that's been mentioned so far. I know he looked terrible against ND (and Syracuse), but he has all the physical tools. Imagine him behind the ND OL with a powerful rushing attack. I think he would thrive at ND.

Completely agree. I think you can fix him too. From what I’ve seen he rushes at times and is errectic when in terms of just throwing to a spot thinking it’s going to be there. Things I think can be fixed.
Also agree with Texas on his assessment of the four qb’s. I’d take Leary out of these four. But that torn pec has me worried. Does it affect his throwing motion?  Will he be ready come August-mentally and physically?  Does he want a guaranteed position?  Lots of time still here. But it’s looking more promising than before.

A torn pec may help in that it could be used to hedge on guaranteeing Leary the starting position.

But do you want a 80 percent Leary just because he won’t be guaranteed the starting position?

Grayson McCall from CC is my pick...

Of the 4 listed, Card...

I hold on DJ until Dabo names Klubnik starter or did I miss that?

DJ has all the upside in the world, but why do you think he would be any different for Notre Dame than Clemson? ND has not proven it is able to develop a qb so I’m not sure it would be any different. Other than a line, he has arguably better weapons right now and has not distinguished himself as elite. I would agree he has the highest upside but he might have the lowest floor as well.

I change my vote to him, ha.

lol...

He's been a target for me for a while.

In short....

  1. McCall - He'll be a grad transfer, so easy. He'd love the opportunity (national spotlight / draft profile) - 1st choice
  2. Card - second choice, but I think he is true Junior. So non-grad transfers sometimes are tough to ND.
  3. Leary - OK, but he'll be a 6th year for him. Would be an easy transfer..
  4. Harris - only 6-0, if not 5-11 ish...
  5. Armstrong - great 2021, but 2022 is ouch... he'd be #2 if you erase 2022

Is it too much to hope Drake Maye is taking a foreign language?

LOL, but I think he'll be loyal to Mac.

He'll stay one more year at UNC, and go to the draft.

IIRC, he's #1 ranked QB now, and way too early big boards for 2024 have Maye the first pick.
