October 9, 20222 yr Author I was going to wait another 20 minutes for the AP to be released before posting this but there is some discussion to be had here. I know its only the Coaches Poll but I find it a bit wonky for BYU to have been dropped from the rankings entirely after last night's game. We basically swapped BYU for UNC as far as having a ranked win. Hopefully UNC keeps winning and BYU can get back to winning again as well. We're going to need all of the help we can get to get back up the rankings.

Same could be said about UNC being in at 25. But, as I said in another thread, 5-1/4-2 > 3-2. But at some point the head to head has to count for something. As long as we keep taking care of business we have ample opportunity to move ourselves back up the polls. Just have to hope UNC and BYU keep winning. As well as OSU, Syracuse, Clemson, and USC.
October 9, 20222 yr Author So both UNC and BYU are unranked and ahead of the Irish on the AP this week.
October 9, 20222 yr While I think ND should be ranked higher than UNC and BYU, losing to Marshall will all that many people will remember this year about ND. Just keeping winning all the ranking will take care of themselves. Chop some wood, put down some rebels, and crush some oranges then we should be watching two ranked teams play in four weeks. Pull off an upset with some skinned tigers and you’ll have yourself a Top 15 team again enroute to a Top 15 showdown to finish the season. Win that game and maybe just maybe you could see the Irish play in a NY6 game. Way too optimistic for me but figured I’d give it a try today.

I am not naïve to think ND has a shot at the CFP. I know they don't. However, if they can finish out this season with a close loss to a top 3 OSU, and ranked wins over Clemson, USC, Syracuse, UNC, and BYU that has to get us a decent bowl regardless of the Marshall game. 2nd game of the season, new coach, new staff, new QB...as long they keep growing as a team and continue to win then anything can happen.
October 10, 20222 yr The disparity in the FPI vs AP and coaches poll says to me what we all know: the Irish aren’t passing the eye test. Letting all 3 of our wins sneak back into the game is bad visibility. If we had kept our foot on BYUs neck and not let those big plays happen in the second half the optics would change and I think we would be looking at the bottom of the top 25.
October 10, 20222 yr A 3-2 team which lost to Marshall at home is going to be ranked behind 5-1 and 4-2 teams. And there are more than 25 teams with 5-0, 6-0, 5-1, and 4-2 records. If ND keeps winning and as Top 25 teams start to have losses or even just bye weeks, then ND should move up. It's not just ND by the way, Purdue is 4-2 with last minute losses to undefeated and ranked teams Penn St. and Syracuse and wins on the road vs Minnesota and Maryland but is not ranked in Top 25 either.

October 11, 20222 yr Getting votes at least. Still the loss to a non-P5 team at home, hurts our votes/rank. Get better!! Keep winning!! We have 4 easy games/Ws, and 3 challenging game. Win the 4, and take 2 or 3 tougher games.
October 11, 20222 yr Guessing that 4 undefeated teams pick up a loss this weekend. Three are guaranteed since there are three games between undefeated teams. Also Syracuse and Southern Cal play other ranked teams and Clemson only 3.5 point favorites on the road at Florida St.

I'm a homer, I guess. I think ND will beat Clemson this year. But not USC. And, it won't surprise me to see the Irish lose one other game that they should have won. 8-4 would be okay for this year (but NOT next year, even though OSU, USC, and Clemson are on the schedule again). And with an 8-4 record, they may draw a bowl team that they should actually beat.
