I like what Brian Mason brings to the mix. Always respected Brian Polian as a recruiter. I just never saw much imagination in his Special teams. Rarely hurt the team, i'll give him that BUT Holtz era special teams seemed to help the team more.

New group of specialists with the exception Vinson

Starting Kicker: Blake Grupe

Kickoffs: Bryce McPherson

Punter/Holder: John Sott

Long Snapper: Michael Vinson

Always seemed to me Polian was more of a "don't F it up" coach. Just go out there and run through the drill and call it good. Do not take chances.

Never liked that aspect of him as a coach. Appreciate his time here but always thought we needed a different idea of how to handle the special teams. IMO.

Agreed. He was always saying to the press, "First do no harm" which is like always playing on yellow or caution. I think Mason will lobby Freeman to give Special Teams the green light to go for a play sometimes.

I just can’t believe how Polian left the cupboard so empty. I understand Jay Bramlett (p) transfered with Kelly but having 3 of the 4 starting kickers/ LS as new to program does not seemed well planned/ recruited by Polian.

I truly believe Polian's positions as assistant head coach/recruiting coach were emphasized over special teams. I think Special Teams were put on the back burner to be at Kelly's right hand.

Good point. But I still have to wonder if all those frequent trips to Hawaii were more than just recruiting……sun, babes, booze and frequent flyer miles…..lol

GOLF.. Kelly maybe Polian loved golf too. Yeah its gonna be hard for the kicking game to help much this year. I just hope returns, blocks too

It will be fun to see special teams over the next two years.  New coaches, new approaches.  Looking forward to seeing the difference in philosophy compared to the last multiple years.

I appreciate a conservative approach, but love seeing ND make good plays.  There must be some metrics somewhere that influence how coaches view this stuff.

He hated travelling to Hawaii with quick turnarounds for such a long roundtrip but it was a means to an end.
