  • Ill answer this.  I think Elder provides some good contrary opinions, which foster good discussion. Sometimes Im not a fan of the tone or whatever but thats my deal.  What I was getting anno

@ELDER06 I don't know if this will make you feel better about Rees not being at Moore's school today, but I thought I'd share.

Oh. and Clarence Lewis

I am glad Del Alexander is gone, not saying he is a bad person, but he is not a very good coach in my opinion. Stuckey is definitely an upgrade and I expect the WRs to actually use proper technique instead of just raw talent.

Rees is a terrible recruiter. Again, look at the list: Clark, Jurkovec, Pyne, Buchner, Angeli. The only one with any proven success in college plays somewhere else. And he’s failing again in the class of ‘23.

Freeman might be a good hire, given the circumstances, he probably was the right choice. However, the hype is stupid. The idea the players should have a say in who is hired is also stupid. They’re not the ones accountable if he fails.

Don’t know which recruits you’re referring to specifically. Angeli is not a major P5 QB, he belongs at Rutgers or Illinois. Arnold is an elite QB and now ND is in a terrible situation of having to land Moore or Vizzina when they don’t lead for either. Avery Johnson is not a major P5 QB either. This all ties back to the first point of Rees not being a good recruiter.

And Clarence Lewis is terrible. Did none of you watch the Fiesta Bowl? That was pitiful. There’s no reason for him to see the field next yr unless it’s bc of injury.

All of you kept bitching about Kelly never getting over the hump, never bridging the gap with the elites. However, you don’t seem to care when they’re doing nothing to close that gap. You only seem to care that the coaches are “nice guys.” Well, f that. The two best coaches in football (Saban & Bellichick) are a holes. Who cares? You don’t win games on Twitter with feel good vibes and dumb asses like Golic Jr branding ND as “cool”, you know what’s cool? Winning.

Laugh all you want, I’m not dumb enough to get caught up in that ridiculous social media circle jerk that all of you did. The reality is if Cincinnati wasn’t in the playoff, Fickell would’ve been a better hire. However, bc he wouldn’t have been available until after Signing Day, it made sense to go with Freeman.

@ELDER06 I think this is positive. I enjoy reading your thoughts. Now I can do it in a blog style thread! Please post here often,

I dont necessarily disagree with elder...  but maybe how he conveys his message....   for positive forward thinking and communication to be possible ..  some people need calm and collective and articulated mediums...  in order to promote engagement in conversation..  otherwise some people feel attacked and tend to clam up and fire insults back ..    and then the circle continues with the next hot topic...  also, people could have a little more mental toughness as well ...

I think it’s funny that he actually responded to all your points as if we didn’t know how he felt. 😂 😂

You keep saying people only want coaches to be “nice guys.” No one has said that, period. You’re creating a boogie man to argue against and it simply doesn’t exist. But go off, king.

... is this actually working?

I felt Kelly had hit his ceiling and I wanted a new coach with a higher ceiling. Fickell had a higher floor but probably a lower ceiling. Freeman has the potential for Top 5 recruiting on a regular basis which many had felt was no longer possible at ND.

As a HC, jury is out but I am OK with giving him some time to see if he can figure it out.

QB recruits under Rees

2018: Phil Jurkovec: #83 overall, offers from Alabama, Clemson, Ohio State

2019: Brendon Clark: #521 overall (3-star), offer from Clemson

2020: Drew Pyne: #225 overall, offers from Alabama, LSU, Oklahoma

2021: Tyler Buchner: #71 overall, offers from Alabama, Georgia, USC

2022: Steve Angeli: #319 overall, offers from LSU and Ohio State

Rees needs to land an elite, Top 100 QB in 2023. But to act like QB recruiting has been dreadful under his watch is just not accurate. Two of his five QB recruits were Top 100 players. All five (even 3-star Clark) had at least one other elite offer. The jury is out on Buchner, but we'll see. And, FWIW, Angeli was the first QB offer ND threw out last cycle. I would have targeted a higher rated player, but I'm not paid to evaluate QB recruits. It seems like the recruiting strategy is to target an elite QB recruit every other year. Guessing this helps depth because elite guys don't want to sit on the bench for more than a year, so landing a guy like Clark or Angeli is good because those guys will stick for 3 years before transferring (like Clark). Some schools can recruit elite QBs every year (Alabama, Oklahoma, Ohio State), but ND is obviously not there yet.

So what you’re telling me is Rees can’t recruit. Thanks for agreeing with me. I don’t get the hype, should’ve let Kelly take his butt to LSU. If all you’re bringing in are the Angeli and Avery Johnsons of the world, you’re not fit to be QB coach/OC at ND.
