What does everyone think about  all the ND coaches basically giving Kelly the middle finger when he came calling offering to double their salaries at LSU?

So far, Kelly has not made a single hire and there are nit even any rumors about coaches from anywhere going there.

F**k LSU and that bandwagon fan base.

I hope the program falters and they have to dip into their measily endowment fund to pay off his contract.

Breaking news!!

I stand corrected. Kelly did make a hire! Guess his son could not turn him down!

Multiple sources confirmed to FootballScoop that Kelly has added his son, Patrick, into an unspecified support staff role within the LSU football program. The younger Kelly also changed a social media account to reflect he had transitioned to “assistant @LSUFootball.”

Most recently, Patrick Kelly had served as a student-assistant coach at Grand Valley State.

These moves come as Kelly on Thursday saw Nebraska and coach Scott Frost hire away Mickey Joseph, most recently the Tigers' wide receivers coach and assistant head coach, into a prominent role on Frost's overhauled Cornhuskers' staff.

Like I said in the other thread... LSU likely gave BK a blank check for assistants.

The only ones he likely really wanted were Freeman and Rees because both are hot up and comers. But why would either want to leave. Freeman get a HC gig, and Tommy has more control staying.

And fwiw... LSU came out early and said they would take their time building out the staff. I'm sure they've employed search firms, and will be hitting things hard. I'm sure it'll be Bama like.

I think it says a lot and may mean the rumors that some of the coaches were truly upset with how everything went down are true.

Seriously though, how does that look? Paying your new HC top dollar but he can’t bring anyone himself and you have to put a team together to find him assistants

Bayou Brian was working with a Dollar General budget at ND typically.

And lol to the bolded. You think teams don't pay search firms? Bama employs several and they have guys calling them and lining up. They treat it like business.

If we're honest, we have 3 guys on staff that would be in demand nationally. Freeman, which we just got, and who got elevated. Why would he leave. Rees, who is a decently hot up and comer, but has more power now staying than going. Why wouldn't he stay. And Lance Taylor has pros and cons, but is more or less in a holding pattern. He's not really going to get an OC job at a big school, and the SEC has plenty of great options from a RB coach perspective.

I was pretty elated that all the assistant coaches turned him down, but it sounds like Freeman would have gone if he didn’t get the head coaching job at Notre Dame. He said as much in his interview.

Yeah, he said he needed a job   when a new head coach comes in they usually want to hire their own staff.

I’ll concede to your points. Still don’t think it looks good for BB though.  Maybe he doens’t give 2 squirts that MF or TR are following him, or maybe he does feel like he has Cajun Scrambled Eggs on his face.

IMO he was expected to be able to poach who he wanted and was surprised that Savvy Jack made this risky move.  Maybe he left when he did not only because he felt he had no longer anything to gain at ND and could not win it all there, but because he felt the timing would leave ND in a vulnerable position of having to wait for other HC candidates to become available (Fickell) , leaving him wide open to grab our top assistants, recruits.

Point to Savvy Jack here.  He went out of his comfort zone to block that. Let’s hope it pays off and MF becomes a star HC. But i expect growing pains, like we saw with the defense earlier this season

And Balis.

I think he wanted Freeman and Tommy. Who doesn't want Freeman? But I don't think he's heartbroken, and doubt LSU expected guaranteed cherry picks. And personally I love Tommy's ceiling, but I can tell you nobody in SEC land sees Tommy as a top tier OC. BK just wanted him as he's an auto fit into what BK wants. And ND fans have an inflated view of our staff. They're not on near the same level of most of the football factories. We've had some nice up and comer DCs of late, but that's about it... And guess what, all the DCs used ND as a stepping stone. Elko, Lea, and now Freeman have all gotten quick boosts.

I also guarantee you that part of LSU's sales pitch was $$ for staff. They've really stepped up their game to compete with Bama in the arms race. LSU wants to win bad, and they're happy to go all in, and have booster support to do just about anything. And they give zero Fs about ND's current staff. Freeman would have been nice, but that's about it.

Overall, I just see a bunch of salty sour grapes about this whole thing from some ND fans, many who never appreciated BK in the first place. Now they just want feign fake outrage as he walks out the door. Personally I don't care. I've been around way too long and seen this same situation go down over and over again on various teams (and several with ND) through the years.

I only hope this wakes ND up. Freeman is likely getting paid less than BK's already low salary. Rees was getting paid a paltry amount, but at least got a raise by leveraging LSU's offer. Hopefully ND opens up the purse and makes strong efforts to replace the empty spots we have. ND probably has near the biggest bank account in CFB, and the booster to match any SEC team. They just haven't used the purse. They think the brand is enough. It's not.

Outside of ND, he's not a big deal. Uber happy he's staying though.

Guessing BK already has a guy locked down since he purged LSU's guy already.

According to some rumors He’s bringing in Balis’s understudy

Yup. Expected. And I think it's official.

If I were him though, I would have kept LSU's guy, and brought in Flint to be Co-S&C. He had the "co" prefix at ND too.

and just to add, heard buzz from a friend that Flint was getting offered by a few mid majors too...

Yup. The cynic in me was wondering the same thing. ND keeps all the staff, saves the recruits, AND gets it for cheap. It’s that last part that bothers me, if it played a bigger role than admitted. Good post.

If Freeman has a good year next season, they need to probably give him a quick raise.

He kinda mentioned things that suggested he would have followed BK had he not got the HC gig (and I wouldn't have blamed him). Both he, and Tommy, leveraged LSU offers to improve their situation. And I think that's great TBH.

If he performs, ND need to step up and show him quick loyalty. If not, wouldn't be shocked to see him poached early. Freeman has jumped around a decent amount already in his young career. The ND homer in me hopes he will be loyal to ND, but ND needs to also be loyal to him, and that starts with.....
