I'm going to go back 2019 get Ian Book's full stat line then compare it to the numbers of Coan and buchner

• 2019 passing: Book:  399 attempts 3,034 yards 60.2% 34 TD 6 INT  QB rating 149.1
• 2021 passing Coan  282 attempts 2296 yards     67%    18 TD 5 INT  QB rating 152.1
• 2021 passing Buchner 34 attempts 302 yards     58.8,    3 TD 3 INT    QB rating 144.9 
   

     Rushing

  2019 Book: 112 attempts: 546 yards 4.9  ypg

  2021 Buchner   43 Attempts 280      6.5 ypg

  2021 Coan      50   Attempts -81 yards -1,6

 

6.5 Buchner's-1.6 Coan's = exactly 4.9 Book's rushing average in 2019.

 

Conclusion: Coan + Buchner really does= Book

Not at all…. Book couldn’t read a Defense or anticipate a throw.  Coan is a much more developed and intelligent qb than Book.  Book was mediocre.  He had wheels which got him out of bad situations, but often, he was the reason for those situations.  I even feel like Buchner reads a defense better.  He’s just young.

Stat totals maybe, but anything else, nah.....

Book read Ds just fine IMO. His timing/anticipation was poor (but he did have a good quick and accurate release), he didn't have good pocket presence, and couldn't push the ball downfield. Decent vision but didn't always get through progressions.

Coan is better pushing the ball downfield and has much better pocket presence. He's best when quick and in rhythm. 

Too soon to really say anything about TB. We know he has an arm, and we know he has good legs... but that's about it. 

 

This is where I disagree.  If he read a defense properly, he would have the anticipation and timing.  As you said, he had a quick release.  Reading a defense means he’ll know who’s going to come open based on various reads.  He couldn’t do that.

I think Tommy was great at reading defenses, but his problem as qb was waiting for a receiver to come perfectly open before throwing which would paralyze him often.  Book never had a problem throwing the ball up to let our guys make a play on it, but that was about as good as it got.  I mean, hell, just look at Chip Long when he was on the sidelines.  He was constantly pissed at Book’s decisions.

Knowing what the D is likely going to do doesn't necessarily mean your timing is good, and you're good at throwing with anticipation. Timing has as much to do with vision and ability to get through progressions. He was good on first read type tosses from an anticipation/timing perspective, but if it wasn't the first read, he really struggled. That's why all kinds of stuff broke down and he left the pocket often.

And waiting for a guy to be open is absolutely a problem with timing/anticipation (your comment on Tommy). 

Chip Long was part of the problem IMO. That's why he got replaced by a 27 year old kid. And last I looked, Tulane's O got worse this year.

Well, that didn't go in the direction I thought.

 

Here's why I posted this:

In order, to be consistent year after year you have to replace the players you lost.

Like Billy Beane in  the Moneyball movie some years you have to replace players with MORE THEN 1 player

 

ND Football both went on the secondary market(transfer portal) and drafted and developed(recruited) Buchner. 

 

The result: A consistent season similar to last year BECAUSE they replaced Book Successfully with Coan and Buchner 

Let the record show that Coan improved his QB rating to 154.8 over 5 points better  THEN BOOK because of a better completion percentage, longer average completion and just higher overall efficiency

 

One can probably make the case now that

 

COAN + BUCHNER > BOOK
