No, not what you're thinking, ha.

I'm curious, since Urban did it, who has taken smaller programs from being bottom feeders to big stage success, THEN moved onto big time programs and done the same as he did with Florida and Ohio State? I.e. win a national title. It's been 15-20 years since that took place.

There are a lot of ND faithful that feel Kelly has taken us as far as we can go and we're just the "Next Big-Thing Coach" from winning a national championship, as if it's just as simple as that.

I don't follow other teams that closely so maybe I'm forgetting someone, but I can't think of anyone that's done it since. But I can think of lots of those next big thing coaches that have gone to traditional powerhouses from smaller schools and completely floundered.

Also, can you imagine if Ohio State hired Youngstown St's HC for theirs.

Ryan Day was an OC in the NFL, hired by Ohio St. as OC, served as interim coach while Meyer was suspended, and then named HC when Meyer left. Somewhat similar to the Dabo path, I suppose.

With only Meyer, Saban, and Dabo winning NCs lately, it makes this a tough question. Maybe if Kirby Smart wins the NC this year, you could consider him, but again he was DC at Bama before leaving for HC at UGA. Not really anyone coming to mind who brought a smaller program to prominence then rose to Meyer's level, probably because there isn't.

Agreed. That's why firing Kelly isn't really a possibility.  If he had not rebounded from the 4-8 then it would have traction but NOT many can match/surpass this last now 4 years. Those that can are named like Saban, Meyer Dabo and they are still employed.

Not many would take Ed Orgeron over Kelly,  He got an NC but most think that was a one shot deal. Credit Burrow, Chase and the OC of the Panthers.

Mack Brown started at App State and Tulane then resurrected the North Carolina program before winning a NC at Texas.

Maybe Chris Petersen is in the next tier conversation. Finished 4th, 5th, 6th, and 7th at Boise State and then finished 4th at Washington. But Boise St was established before Petersen took over.

Yeah I think Peterson has a fairly successful protégé in Bryan Harsin too. Boise State-Auburn(has not won big, but its year 1). So he's on the watch list so to speak.  @SDIrishFan would you be willing to do the Coaching Carousel thread this year? This is great discussion.
