Kudos to Kelly

Good thread @ndomer4 .  We’re always pretty quick to bash Kelly when things go south but I agree with everything that the team has endured this season we should be praising him for a job well done.  Let’s not forget at the beginning of the season this board was having conversations on how lucky we’d be to have a 3 loss season.

Agreed, but who is taking them further not named Saban, Dabo, Day or Meyer?

You asked the question so you tell me. If you are happy with being close but no cigar then Kelly is your man. If you like playing a watered down schedule, having a coach who is an great speaker and is very close with the AD then Kelly is your man. Having the all time record for wins doesn't mean much if you beat up on the lesser teams and can't beat the big boys when it counts.

For me personality I would rather have a few less wins against the cupcakes and a few more wins against the big boys.

Let's also not forget how the schedule looked during that same time. Cincy, USC, UNC, and Wisconsin were all projected to be top teams.

If ND wins the next two regular season games, the 2018 class will have a better record than any class post Ara. That's pretty good.

How many wins will there be against teams ranked at the end of the season?  Digging deeper, how many wins against teams that finished in the top 10 at the end of the season?  Hell, how many wins against top 10 teams at the time of the game.

(I don't count 2020 Clemson against a team that has multiple star players out)

With the way coaching salaries are going, it becomes a $12-15 million a year gamble.  I don't know what Kelly makes, but my guess is it's closer to $6 million/yr all told.

It's one thing to offer Lincoln Riley that kind of money.  Something else to offer that kind of money to Luke Fickell or PJ Fleck.  Yet, as the hot up-and-comers, that's probably the kind of money that would be required when Kelly's contract expires.  I'd much rather offer that money to Kelly than Fickell, just based on accomplishments to date.

It seems to me that having a few less wins against the lesser teams means you would have fewer opportunities to play the big boys in the big bowls.  You have to win against pretty much whatever team is on your schedule just to have the opportunity to play the big bowl games.

Kelly will break through and win one for us.  The recruiting in the next two classes is looking really good and with Freeman now that is going to be huge.  Bama is finally showing signs of not being completely dominant.  Our time is near my fellow irish friends, took him a decade to figure it out but we got some talent coming in and currently on that freshman roster.

i agree.  with recruiting looking the way it is AND having freeman onboard.

we might be looking at competitive playoff runs over the next 3 to 5 years.

gotta keep freeman, gotta get another top 5-10 class or two.

You make some great points.  BUT, does it really matter to you?  Is it your money being spent?  ND can pay a head coach the norm of any of the higher-ups. They choose not to.

Freeman will be here 1 - 2 more years. Our competitiveness in the playoffs/BCS had nothing to do with talent. It had to do with Kelly having his team ready to play on the big stage. I am not saying we should have won I am just saying we should have been competitive.

When your head coach is scared that is going to permeate down through the team. Kelly is/was scared. If it was all about talent Dabo would have never won the big one against Alabama to begin with because his first championship team didnt have much more talent than ND has had for the past decade. The big exception talent wise is Dabo could recruit a QB and coach him up. I have yet to see anything like that from Kelly. Dabo also wasn't scared of Saban or Alabama's talent.

I sure hope Kelly proves me wrong because in the end I don't care who the coach is I just want another Natty for Our Lady. I was pulling for Kelly for the majority of his career but when he continues to choke in big games I have lost faith he has the skills. He has just made to many mistakes. I will give him a little credit in winning more than any coach since Holtz but that is about it.

It really does matter to me.

I don't know where the money comes from.  Maybe there are a bunch of wealthy fans who pony up the money.  $13 million/yr x 5 years = $65 million.  That would be a lot of ponying.  But, if ANY of the cost of that salary is passed on in the cost of tickets, parking, stadium food, fan apparel, tuition, or "Peacocking", I'm not so enthusiastic.  It's already expensive to take your family to a game.  I think that's one of the reasons the stadium doesn't sell out for games like North Carolina.

I do understand that if you want to play with the big boys, you have to play like the big boys.  It just seems insane to me that we have arrived at this kind of money.  This gets passed on down through all of college football.  Pay Campbell $10 million/yr to go to USC, then pay the next Iowa State head coach $7 million/yr.  Pay the coach that replaces the guy who replaced Campbell $3 million/year.

Meanwhile, college football goes to pay-per-view.  It seems to me this is where it's all headed.  Me-no-likey.

That’s just it. They are already doing it!  Peacock is just a matter of time. Tickets have gone up over the years. They are already overcharging. The least they can do is continuing to put a good product on the field and pay there coaches so that they don’t leave. Regardless, money is being spent.

A small nit: To the extent that ND uses pay-per-view (Peacock) and raises ticket, parking, and concession prices to cover coaches' salaries, then it does matter to fans.
