Virginia gives up 5.72 yards per rush

Has been out rushed by their oppenent by about 700 yards on the season.

Virginia passes for over 1400 more yard then their opponent on the season..

Kelly Spoke of their 3-3-5 defense

As we know 3-3-5 really can give up the rush yards when the (Linebackers + defensive backs) stay back.

We also know from last week that drop 8 can be really hard too pass against

QB often has time but has to check it down short or run himself past the 3 down front

3-3-5 can also find creative ways to bring 3, 4, 5, 6  7, 8 pass rushers, taking some from different levels of the defense.

As you know on 3rd down and long is the time where the exotic blitzes happen. Drop an end into coverage send a linebacker deep and blitz a safety kind of things. (just an example)

stats tell me.

1. Run the Ball

2. Stay on schedule. 1st and 10, 2nd and 6, 3rd and 2.. etc

3. Keep the ball away from their offense

Questions:

Will Virginia's QB Brendan Armstrong play: Answer: We'll see not been ruled out. The lefty QB is an excellent passer and runner.

Armstrong Competes hard wants perfection. Really improved from last year.

More accurate this year

Started to run more after knee got better

Receivers:

TE: Woods is 6'7. Hard to tackle. Grad transfer.

Thompson 6'4 6'5 grad transfer utility player

WR: Wicks(best receiver)

WR: Henry

 WR Kemp(smaller faster)

Mindset of Virginia in a non-conference game

needed to fix defense

used to be 3-4 now 3-3-5

UVA Gives up to many big plays in losses

UVA might care more about the ACC Costal Division, might effect if their QB plays

This is a weakness of the 3-3-5 this an outside pulling run to the boundary where your defensive free hitter(the guy supposed to make the tackle) is moving at about 29.5 yard line. You have a blocker who can wall off that first free on the end of the line. The back will be at full speed with a blocker in front by the time the free hitter meets the ball carrier. 12 yard gain BYU.

@OKelleyIrish was this what you see as a weakness in the outside B/C Gap? because I do. He cuts this one inside a bit but their is also room outside

Nope.

His D is designed to clog the A and B gaps, and tempt or force Os to try their luck running to the C-gap. It's exactly where he wants them to go.

And when they do, the OLBs and/or sniper is responsible (along with others swarming). It's the reason why we need to upgrade OLBs and find the right sniper type (who is a hybrid safety/LB type).

Kyle was both perfect for FS and sniper, but he's only one person lol. I think Nolan Zeigler might be an answer at sniper. Liaufu, Pryor, Moala, and Kiser may also fit.

It's only a weakness if our overhangs aren't good.

my point was i think Virginia lacks a true overhang guy. See the nickle in that picture about to get blown up by BYU?

Sorry, I thought you were asking about the weakness of Freeman's system when you brought up my C-gap comment.

VA lacks a lot. I really can't see all the D in that shot, looks like they have 4 up on the DL. I know their base last year was 3-4, and they're playing more 3-3-5 this year, but they've always been a bit screwy. I've seen UVA have packages with both only 1, and 2 down linemen in previous years. In the pic, I'm assuming they have 3DL and 1 LB up on the LOS. Not sure who the others are.

Yeah it looks like you can find the rover sniper guy and run right at him all night, could be wrong but ND should rush for 200+ if let Kyren find that little guy lined up at about the 30

RPO should work too. You see the Run option here where they Get a BIG GAURD out on that so not/ DB Linebacker

But keep in mind, at least in Freeman's system, the "overhangs" are supposed to be about 5 yards off the LOS. Not up on the LOS, and not 10 yards back either. Just not sure I'd compare MF's scheme to BM's. Some similarities, but not the same.

Not totally familiar with BM's terminology, but I think he has an "Aztec", which is a S/LB hybrid, but is not the same as MF's Sniper. The Aztec sits in the middle of the field behind the LBs, and is a robber type. The sniper in MF's system is typically on the outside and no deeper than the LBs.

I've read some scheme stuff on both. I'll try to find the articles I read earlier this year.

We can recruit high 4 star Linebackers, UVA would struggle. I'm just looking at how ND will score this week.. I think about 40 points like you do. I think Kyren should have a big day if Rees watches what BYU did.

The above are two decent reads on both schemes.

On how we can score... We should be able to score easily in just about every way. They allow a 135+ passer rating, and are one of the worst run Ds in the league. Plain horrible

In short, don't worry about how we score. Their D sucks. Their O however is good, so it's a bigger concern how we stop them.

Let CBo and Diggs get touches lol... No need to run KW into the ground. All of our RBs should be able to get 5 per carry easily.
