one of biggest “WTF?” things you’ll ever read

My least favorite game of the year. I get and appreciate the history, but ND gets nothing out of it. Beat Navy and it’s “oh big win against a service academy”

lose and it’s “you lost to a service academy you’re terrible”

Almost guaranteed to come away with a couple lower leg injuries from the chop blocks, have to completely adjust a game plan for one week out of the year, there’s a hangover almost every year the week after this game. Rant over

Yea I hate this game.  I hate having to root against Navy.  I hate seeming to always come away wounded after playing Navy.  And like you said, it's basically a lose lose game.

I appreciate ND playing Navy every year. Not necessarily from a football perspective, however. 
It is a perfect game for marketing opportunity. It’s a team you’re likely to beat, a team the really wants to play you, and a team that’s willing to try different things. They don’t seem to care so much about exactly where games are played. Dublin?  No problem. San Diego?  Fantastic. DC?  Sure!  They are the military’s traveling equivalent of Notre Dame.   It makes all the sense in the world, to me, for ND to play them. I think this goes way beyond a debt being paid from WWII. 
Brand exposure. Schools with ‘good character’, high standards, and huge numbers of fans spread across the country.

And as an Irish fan this is why I do like to play them.  Excellent post.  Someone else had a great post a few days ago about forcing the scheduling to have us play Navy the week before our bye.  I don't understand why this isn't done.
