September 18, 20213 yr 1. Defense is coming together led by Hamilton, Foskey and Bertrand. 2. Oline was improved but not good. We'll need their best effort to beat Wisconsin next weekend. 3. WR/Coan both made mistakes today, clean it up and we will keep seeing more big plays. 4. Heck of a game by the punter! 5. Avery Davis does not suck, explosive day from the slot. Don't let me down vs Bucky, I won't be able to handle work or family outings for a while if we lose to the Badgers! (Been waiting my whole life for this match up).
September 18, 20213 yr Author Huge day for Avery Davis. Easily his career best. Reliable when others weren't. The D still has issues, but they are getting better. 57 total rushing yards. They got passing yards, but we also had multiple INTs. Kyle is a freaken monster. I can't imagine not having him Coan didn't have flashy numbers, but 2 TDs and no INTs is clean and efficient. Several drops, one that should have been an easy TD. Aside Kyren's 51 yarder, our running game is still stuttering. OL has to get more push. WRs overall did not play well. Saw some very sloppy routes. And if you get two palms on the ball, you need to make the catch. Only 2 WRs had catches today...... And Mayer only had one catch. If you told me that before the game, I would have thought we'd lost. Rees adjusted well IMO to account for shoddy OL play. Only 350ish total O yards, but we were pretty efficient, and made plays when we had too. I do like the Buckner packages, but he's going to have to do more than run. Bonus.... Tosh Baker was a stud... Purdue's 1st round DE.... What's his name again? lol Edited September 18, 20213 yr by OKelleyIrish
September 18, 20213 yr 1. 13 points allowed. first game under 20 in the freeman era. You know i feel that under 20 is the magic number 2. Defensive signs worked well for communication, only one real mistake lining up that we could see. 3. Positive turnover margin. Won the turnover battle. Lost by 3 last game 4. Made a run inside longer then 10 yards, to close the game 5. Avery gave Mayer a break. The safety has to respect Davis or Mayer will get doubled.

I'm an under-21 guy, but I'm happy to go with your under-20!!

September 18, 20213 yr Really happy they won! This year won't be a BCS year that is for sure. Honestly, I am not so sure they end the year in the top 20. Hoping they can hang on to recruits and gain some new ones.

September 18, 20213 yr better game for the defense,,,,especially the front four...geez hamilton is so good! tough game for Austin and lenzy punter was TERRIFIC,,,and big plays for williams not a great looking team of course but,,,,overall not sure if we are just average,,,or much better then average...time will tell color me concerned about the next five....would probably be happy with 3 of 5..... aloha
September 18, 20213 yr I am content. Not a great game by any means, but solid game. The good thing is we have huge room for improvement.
September 19, 20213 yr Author Overall I'm content too. Still concerned about our OL and running game. Tosh played pretty good though. I see progress on D. Coan isn't flashy, but has been effective. And his stats are just as good as Rattlers.... if you can believe that.
September 19, 20213 yr ND has big play potential on offense on every play. The defense may be pretty darned good. Improved team depth is already showing. They’ll be erecting a Kyle Hamilton statue outside the stadium before the year ends. Edited September 19, 20213 yr by AnTostal
September 19, 20213 yr I watched the game helter skelter from a few different locations but we won and here are my takes: 1. Kyle Hamilton is not to be messed with; 2. Receivers could’ve made a few more catches and would’ve blown this thing wide open; 3. DLine looked deep, NaNa welcome to ND nation; 4. Am I crazy or did Tosh Baker play pretty well; and 5. Coan missed some pretty great opps. Win is a win is a win. We smacked them down on defense at the end of the day, let’s play better next week.
September 19, 20213 yr My five takeaways for the game. 1. Avery Davis had a huge game. 5 catches for 120 yards and one TD! And that TD was huge!! 2. Lenzy and Austin struggled, especially Austin. As many crazy catches as Austin had the first two games, he pretty much dropped everything today. I’m sure he’ll bounce back because he’s a great player. 3. Defense! Much, much better today. Guys that stood out on defense for me today were Bertrand, Tagovailo-Amosa, Heart, and Hamilton. 4. Kyren Williams. Dude is a beast! He just has such great vision, is such a hard runner, and can make anyone miss with his cuts. Oh, and his stiff arms are pretty good too. 5. O-Line still struggled a bit overall in the first half, but found their way in the second half. Baker played pretty great at Left Tackle for his first start. I was very impressed with him. Hopefully they can build off of this. In the end, I’m happy with the way they played…and it’s a win! On to Wisconsin! ???? Edited September 19, 20213 yr by Baldy
September 19, 20213 yr 1. ND has two lousy offensive tackles. This limits the passing game to short passes in regular sets, or keeping a tight end or two and having Coan throw in very tight spaces. Our offense will be limited all year due to this tackle problem. 2. ND spent most of the day on defense in 4 man fronts and played more zone in the secondary with favorable results. Even with this adjustment, we will struggle with faster offenses with a better QB due to average speed (with the exception of Hamilton) in the linebacker corps and secondary. 3. After some game tape on Buchner, Purdue contained him better than Toledo. I hope they’re holding back his downfield passing ability for the upcoming better opponents, instead of seeing it as a liability. 4. Coan must pass better and our wide receivers must catch the ball better in the upcoming games. Due to our protection problems, when Coan does get a shot we must take advantage of it. He struggles with accuracy when he has to step up in the pocket more and, when he doesn’t have to step up much and throws either a perfect pass (Braden Lenzy ) or a good enough pass (Austin) the opportunity has to be seized. 5. Kyren Williams is the heart of this team. That TD run to seal the game was all willpower. Kris Tyree has a bit more talent and will be a superstar if he develops Williams’ willpower. That being said they are two very complimentary weapons Edited September 19, 20213 yr by Frankus

September 19, 20213 yr No time for five… but Josh Lugg got abused… big time. That has to change or the personnel does…
September 20, 20213 yr I'm happy that the D only gave up 13 points, but Purdue's offense is pretty 1 dimensional. But I'll take it for now. A few times in key situations Rees went empty backfield. I hope he rethinks that because Coan is no threat to run and our tackles need help as mentioned here. Agree Baker played a pretty good game. Agree that Kyren and Kyle are beasts
