jbrown_9999
Notre Dame senior wide receiver Lawrence Keys III plans on sitting out the remainder of the 2021 season, will graduate in December and then decide what to do with his final two seasons of eligibility. ... Notre Dame has now lost five receivers from its roster since the 2020 season ended. Lawrence Keys joins Jordan Johnson, Kendall Abdur-Rahman, Micah Jones and Jay Brunelle as players who have left the wide receiver position in recent months. This has to be a concern for Brian Kelly since so much of it is happening at one position. https://www.si.com/college/notredame/football/notre-dame-football-lawrence-keys-to-sit-out-remainder-of-2021-season Edited September 9, 2021 by jbrown_9999

The only loss that IMO hurt was JJ. This must have just happened, as ND's depth chart for Toledo still had him listed as #2 slot. Wonder if there's more to the story and the school is just keeping things quiet. His lack of snaps has been a bit of a head scratcher. mcgov12
I don’t believe any of those other than JJ are what could be considered big losses. I think it’s more of a case of seeing younger guys (Styles, Watts, etc) making moves. Good luck to him and wherever he goes though
FaithInIrish Forever
To me. Keys probably grew tired of backing up Avery Davis, and felt passed by Styles. But he's had chances. He didn't win Punt returner either, losing to Kyren.

Not everyone is going to be the Kevin Austi/JavonMckinley type and wait till their senior year to be “the man.” Davis is like in his 6th year. Has done some nice things but clearly isn’t a go to slot guy. I don’t feel like Keys was ever given a chance. Just like a lot of guys before them. Kelly’s system or qb, whoever seems to highlight one receiver a year and bench other good receivers. I just don’t get it. I know there’s only one ball but if you have more than one weapon than it only makes your offense that much better. Agree on Styles. I think he’s going to be a monster. ndomer4
From what I’ve seen from Keys I have never been overly impressed. He’s small, has questionable hands and is not a burner like Lenzy. this will only be an issue if we start seeing injuries at receiver like we have at linebacker.

I remember he ran a horrible 40 at The Opening before he got to ND. Way too slow for a 5-10 guy. Just hope it opens the door for one of the frosh. Not that BK plays frosh WRs much these days, but would be nice.
NDhoosier
Ill be honest, 3 of the WRs that have left the program were not big losses at all (Brunelle, Abdur, and Micah). They wouldnt have seen much playtime in their careers here in my opinion. JJ is the big one that hurts, but something tells me that it was a personality issue with JJ and he expected to be the star WR right away and wasnt getting it. Keys is somewhere in between. He has shown glimpses of being productive, but nothing about him really stands out. Keys is definitely a loss for depth reasons, but we have a few quality WRs among the freshmen who can hopefully rise up to the task. And with 2, maybe 3 very talented frosh, and 2 more coming in next year, not really worried.
JTennant
This is going to be the new norm with the revised transfer portal. I don't see it is as a sign of trouble with the program and player development. Look at FSU's defense..
NDhoosier
So, after looking at the roster and the WR position... 1 5th year in Davis 3 seniors with another year of eligibility (Austin, Lenzy, Wilkins) 3 True freshman (Styles, Colzie, Thomas) That is a little scary and I am hoping 1 or 2 of the seniors decide to stay another year. Hopefully Austin has the type of year to put him in the top 3 rounds. Otherwise, the WRs will be talented but VERY YOUNG next year. I can easily see the top position in transfers being WR, because you could have a group of TRUE sophomores as your most experienced WRs. I could see Austin declaring if he has a big year given his history. My gut says at least Lenzy and Wilkins will be back, but really too early to know/guess. Overall, I agree the depth is a little scary, but BK did say IIRC that a few of the frosh would get some snaps, so at least there's some confidence in them. With 2 more high 4 stars coming in next year we should be OK so long as BK is willing to play young guys. I've always wanted to see more youth at WR the last few years. Irish_Thunder
We should be in a position to look for potential transfers into the WR group as well this winter, so many players will change hands going forward.
