Initial takeaway is that the run D was just bad and we needed to run something better than that 3-man front against Free Shoes U. Tackling was embarrassing at times. Shoulda had 3 more sacks. 

Hamilton is just ridiculous. The sideline-to-sideline on that 2nd pick was freaking stupid. NFL scouts are drooling. Please don’t get hurt and let us enjoy you all season. 

Offense was pretty effective for the most part but good lord the run blocking needs help. That isn’t their fault entirely though. Rees and his GD insistence on that damn inside run on the RPO draw hybrid crap when the D knows the QB is NEVER going to keep it. I still will never get over the fact that Tommy Rees gets his first shot at OC in college at Notre FREAKING Dame. He isn’t going anywhere while Kelly is here so I should just accept it. I won’t. 

Blowing an 18 point lead sucks, but still a win when you check the schedule and in a hostile environment. The D didn’t make Mr. Freeman look very good, but a week to tune stuff up will work wonders I hope. If we give up more than 13 next week I’ll be a little bummed. 

Also highly pissed off with the officiating last night. Progressively pounding Miller lites the more the game went on didn’t help, but the running into the kicker and the non fumble were atrocious calls.

The 3-3-5 was the start of the FSU comeback. Why ND changed is anyone's guess.

The O line was/is terrible.

Hopefully the coaches will make the needed changes after watching the game tapes.

Wilkins is #2 behind Austin outside, but I'd like to see him go to the other side and get some #1 reps at the same time as Austin. Lenzy had 2, so not totally poo pooing him. Slot was totally non existent (Davis and Keyes). Or maybe move Wilkins to slot. 

You’re so right.  What I should have said was the slot was non existent because I totally forgot about Davis.  I guess that had to do with the play calling.  ?

I was being a bit too rough on Lenzy though, because he did have a couple of big catches.  And the one deep pass to him was Coan‘s fault for it being way under thrown.

I agree with you about having Wilkins be a starter, because from what I saw last night, Wilkins and Austin are our big time play makers at receiver!

I'm trying not to over react to game one as far as WRs go, but I've never been overly impressed with Davis. I thought this might be his year if he could settle into the position after a few bounces around. Going to give him and Keys a pass and not be too adamant (negatively) about anything this early, or at least through the first 3 games..... 

But I will be positive at the risk of being overly positive early lol. Austin already got the snaps, but have to think Wilkins gets more snaps in the weeks to come. I just don't want him stealing snaps from Austin.

Yup. Next week we might be singing a totally different tune about different WRs. I'm looking forward to seeing Styles too.

In general, didn't see that many tosses to the middle of the field with the exception of a few to Mayer. Most seemed outside. Could be the FSU D clogging the middle, could be Tommy's play calling, could be Coan simply is a little reluctant to throw in traffic. 

It's early. Toledo should be a total tune up, so we might see very vanilla stuff, or we could see Tommy trying refine some things we didn't see, or struggled with, in game 1.

Can't wait!

That is so true!

Yeah, it really could have been a number of things that made them not throw down the middle.  I still think it was the play calling, but as you said, the reason for that could have been due to FSUs defense clogging up the middle.

Let’s hope they open it up a bit more and show us what we know they are capable of, even if it is just against Toledo.

some good nuggets from BK earlier today to go along with a lot of the points made here.

here's the TLDR for the lazy

• D played poor gap assignment. Gap assignment last year was per position, gap assignment this year changes per call/situation. Freeman will right the ship. 
• D caused havoc, but gave up big plays
• Excited to be home and defend the 24 game win streak
• Toledo finest MAC team to come to SB. Short week. 
• Coan pushed the ball down field. Good communicator. Road moment wasn't too big for him
• 2 MRIs scheduled today Fisher and Simon, hard to get a MRI tech on Labor Day
• Paul Moala tore his other Achilles tendon, gone for season. Raw sad moment.
• Bauman has a non weight bearing fracture to the leg. Surgery and plate. 6 weeks. 
• Pleased with protection (wut? lol). 
• Not making excuses for running game failures. Motion and silent cadence issues. Will get better. Need to lock in on some calls at the line (blaming Coan?). OL not firing at the same time. Doubles were not good. 
• Can't miss tackles. Have to play sound fundamentals. 
• Have to change the routine this week. Can't have a normal physical Tuesday practice after a very physical game on Sunday. Need to adjust the load this week.
• Made some fun of the helmet issue

1) Coan is no game manager and might be a heisman contender. 
 

2) Freeman is no Lea. He may be a better recruiter but Lea was a master at adjusting. I saw the opposite from Freeman. The sky is not falling yet, but the playcalling at the end was horrific. 
 

3) the O line will figure things out, but I think the passing game carries this team. Might be our best collection of playmakers since 2015. 
 

4) This was the worst tackling I’ve seen from an ND defence since 2016. Linebackers were awful and need to be better. 
 

5) this might end up being one of our better wins. It’s early but I could see FSU being a top 20 team.

I think you have to give Freeman, or any coordinator, at minimum a 3rd of the season before things start clicking for players. There's not question we had a ton of gap confusion and missed tackles, and frankly it's not all on Freeman. There were some positives too. Freeman is also aggressive, so we should have always expected havoc, but also some big plays allowed. I'm not going to even begin passing judgement till after Wisconsin.

I'm probably more down on the OL than most. Losing Blake hurts bad. He was the only one that looked good to me. The others have been in the system for a long time, so I give them less slack. They need to look much much better vs Toledo.

I agree 100% on playmakers. We're stacked it seems at WR, along with the obvious RBs and TEs.

Yup, which is one reason I have to give Freeman a bit of rope. I think he needs to really look seriously at shuffling LBs. Our lack of LBs few cycles ago might hurt us this year.

Yup. FSU had a lot to be optimistic about. They've had a good running team, but a lot of the other areas looked much improved. It will be interesting to see who they settle with at QB. Both QBs bring value in different areas. Personally I like Milton given what I saw from him at UCF.
