Posted July 21, 20213 yr Multiple reports out there that Texas and Oklahoma reached out to the SEC about potentially joining the conference.
July 21, 20213 yr This would be a titanic shift. The SEC would distance themselves from the Big 10 and lap every other conference.
July 22, 20213 yr I feel like this would push closer to super conferences (which I think is going to happen eventually anyway)
July 22, 20213 yr Will it matter in the end? Especially, if the playoffs go to 12 teams. You can’t have 12 SEC teams in the playoffs. If anything, this only hurts Texas and Oklahoma IMO.
July 22, 20213 yr I think it does hurt Texas and OU, they are the premier teams in their current conference (Hell, Texas has their own TV network). I cannot see the benefits for them at this time. If they moved, the Big 12 would dissolve within months.
July 22, 20213 yr I think they’re looking to capitalize on the sponsorship behemoth the SEC is about to become for its players.
July 22, 20213 yr Last time they were flirting with the Pac 12. It wouldn't surprise me if this is just a move to get greater share of the TV revenue from the Big 12 conference.
July 22, 20213 yr Joining the Pac12 or Big Ten would make so much more sense for them. It would boost both those conferences to SEC level and both schools would still be premiere schools in those conferences. If they joined the SEC it would diminish both schools. July 22, 20213 yr I think a lot of this has to do with recruiting. Every year kids from Texas pick SEC schools over Texas and OK. I think for Texas to be Texas again, they need to lock down the state like they did in the early 2000s. I don’t think that happens anymore without going to SEC. OK has been great, I’d like to see how they fair in the SEC. I am not in favor of this move, but I see why. This would start the next conference shift. Big 12 would end, PAC12 would grow, Big Ten would grow, and ACC possibly as well.
July 23, 20213 yr Big 12 would remain as a Power 5 conference, regardless of how many members it has, which would be more than enough to keep the conference together, imho.

I think there’s two big problems with joining the PAC. One is geography. West coast is less populated and when they play the more populated half of the country is asleep. Also, the most fertile recruiting grounds are in the SE - as is the most lucrative league. Similar issue for B1G. Population and economics are on the decline in that region. Recruiting will be in decline as a result.
July 24, 20213 yr Hey guys. Been a while since I posted, but this story got my attention. I really don’t understand the full benefits for them joining the SEC. I guess it must be massive for them or they wouldn’t be doing it. IMO this will just put pressure on the B1G and ACC and ND to form a super conference as well in order to compete. As an old school guy, I really don’t like what is happening to CFB. I think it’s losing its history and character. I guess we will see how it shakes out.

The more I think about it, the more likely to me it seems like all the remaining big name schools will just ditch their conferences and form one coast-to-coast mega league - the catch being that they will purge all the little school members along the way. Talking Washington State, Northwestern, Wake Forest, Rutgers…. They’re all going bye-bye. It’s really the only way to catch up and pass the SEC at this point. The SEC has a few dead-weight teams that can’t be adding more than they’re taking. Arkansas? Vanderbilt? I have questions there. And the SEC only covers about 40% of the country. Which is very sad. Apparently they would stand to make about 15 million more a year than they do now.
July 24, 20213 yr Funny Jack Swarbrick said this was going to happen about a year ago. I can’t remember his exact words. He said something ( not specific to any team or conference) to the effect that he could see conferences would be consolidating ( and some schools eliminating football all together) but that this should not effect ND being an independent.
July 24, 20213 yr Big12 would not remain a Power conference if those two leave. Not a fan of this as this will probably result in the 4 mega conferences which would probably force ND to join the ACC.
July 27, 20213 yr I saw a talking head say he thinks. Norte Dame and USC would join the Big Ten. Don’t see it myself. I don’t see this as a good thing for either Texas or Oklahoma. They would be less likely to make a 12 team playoff.

Dodd mentioned that Big 12 might consider offering 1.5 revenue share to Texas and Oklahoma to entice them to stay. That might make more sense than joining SEC. (Not sure what the dollars look like over next ten years) If something like that happens, it might cause other schools to push for unequal revenue distribution. Not sure that anyone else really has the same leverage as Texas and Oklahoma at the moment.
