ND has an exciting new defensive Coordinator. He also brings a somewhat NEW defense.  A defense that blends  Heacock(Iowa State) (3-3 stack) with Ohio State coverages (Cover 1) i.e, less tricks involved needs athleticism

With the word new come growing pains. Defense was good enough to make  Clarke Lea Head Coach last year.

So the  Poll will say:

How tolerant will you be if the defense has it  early struggles but shows signs of being better for the long haul?

Just from his impact on recruiting, for me, Freeman has earned the benefit of the doubt for 2021.

Its a more attractive defensive scheme to recruit to then Lea's. The front end features lots of pass rushing opportunities and coverages appear to be less complicated which attract DB's with NFL aspirations. Its like having Licoln Riley or someone like him coaching offense, Freeman's the trending coach of the coolest scheme out there. Wish we had that on offense, but Kelly's trying to develop it in Rees rather then try to hire a coach/practitioner.

The neat thing about that is Rees does hit the home run and develop the next Big thing he can develop it at Notre Dame instead having his cutting edge years at a smaller school, hopefully,

A new scheme always needs time.

Surprised the run D was so bad, but FSU had a great running game last year.......

Agreed,  I thought he might run Leas scheme, but it was very much a 3-3 with a middle lb inserted tonight

Nope. Freeman was absolutely going with his scheme. He was in demand big time, so doubt anyone expect him to change.

The offense did no favors after we switched to that either.  Horrible on 3rd downs tonight and left the defense on the field too much especially in the 4th quarter

I don’t understand sticking with 3 DL while you’re getting gashed on the ground.

The idea was to contain the QB in option terms. The problem was the dive(inside run) was hurting us more then the outside run and then when we adjusted we lost contain and the outside run was then an issue.

Solutions

Move MTA inside.

go more four down.

Figure out WILL        BETTER

I also believe that we went Very conservative when we got up by 18 on both offense and defense.  We didn’t go consistently 3-D lineman until we got up by 18.  I felt like that was our prevent defense. Terrible!  Yes the will needs to be better.

Clark Lee was a master at in game  and halftime adjustments. Freeman is going to have to show that he can do that. Plain and simple he got outcoached in the second half.

This defense has athletes and skill players to be great. They just need to figure it all out.  I think they can.

Everything you said is on point, and exactly how I feel.  Well said!

I think any defense that utilizes 3 DL needs that 320LB NT in the middle.  Hinisch is close and the newer DTs will be an even better fit.  Also, if the schemes are going to be predictable, you really need to execute because the OC is going to call specific plays knowing what the def is running.
