Some quotes from

Quote

Notre Dame recently offered 2023 five-star QB prospect Malachi Nelson from Los Alamitos, Calif.

Wiltfong: “Malachi is arguably the top quarterback in the country. Notre Dame is late here. He’s not going to Notre Dame. It’s the one area where Notre Dame is still kind of slow, building relationships with quarterbacks."

" Lincoln Riley has been recruiting this kid personally for six months."

Lemming: “Malachi Nelson is the kind of guy Notre Dame hasn’t had at quarterback maybe ever. They fell way behind timewise just by offering this week. Other schools offered him a year ago."

"Notre Dame’s got some catching up to do, because they were so far behind in offering this kid."

Is there a legitimate reason why after 11 years, BK seems to still be playing catch-up to other schools? While those schools are offering 2024 QBs, he is still making 2023 offers.

While Saban recognized the need to modernize his offense years ago, Kelly is just now saying that ND needs an offense which can score more points to compete in the CFP.

It took 10+ years for Kelly to acknowledge that he needed to aim for Top 5 classes instead of Top 15.

It is that whole good, very good, or great thing. Under Kelly we had 1 bad, several good and probably 3 very good seasons, Never great by ND standards because greats are measured in Championships.

The guy is very hard on his QB's and skill players. You heard alot of traits type comments over the years.

When people question his traits he gets defensive. He doesn;t really seem to mind handing over his defense.

He has a few more years to find greatness but his legacy right now is an uncomfortable almost great with a side of gratitude for makking  the football part of the program and its facilities respectable again.

I just dont get how he can’t bring in better talent at the skill positions. It is a total head scratcher. I am not saying the numbers Alabama, OSU, or Clemson. But there is no excuse not to be able to bring at least 1 dynamic game changer at RB or WR every year. And develop more than 1 NFL quality QB in 10 years. It’s mind boggling with the record over the last 3 years that we are not any closer to competing with the big dogs and other teams who have done less are actually Catching back up to ND.

Kelly is like Ian Book. Very good with some ND records due to increased number of games and a diluted strength of schedule but not much success in the biggest of games.  As Faith said "almost great".

JBrown and I Finally found the term we agree on with Kelly. Almost great is so frustrating. I can see why BK is so uncomfortable most of the time. Alot of pressure to make that last step outside. However, I just don't know how much of it burns inside. We'll see. Is Almost great enough for Kelly or does he have another gear?? Elston does he, rented out billboards all over the country to promote recruiting and has boarded planes to Europe! Kelly made that change. I need to see Buchner get some real snaps this year to be convinced. Not high leverage snaps unless he   just wins the job, but snaps where he is running the offense.

I agree the QB recruiting isn't good enough. I'm not a fan of Angelli at all in the upcoming class. However, I'm not so worried about Malachi Nelson, because I think Dante Moore is their best option for the class of '23.

I agree that improvement is needed with QB recruiting.  If Kelly doesn't see the need for adjustment then that is a problem.  I would like to see a 4 or 5 star QB be one of the first recruits to commit in each class since they typically do a good job of convincing others recruits to do the same.  I think I read that they were late to recruit Simpson for the 22 class and you see how that worked out.

Sounds like Nelson will be pledging OU soon.  Moore sounds like a UM/ND battle.  Both kids seem to be studs.

Because he's the worst developer of QB talent this school has seen in the modern era?  That could be why...

To be fair, ND isn't exactly pulling in 5 star recruits at any position consistently. Sure, QBs get the front page, but being behind the curve can be said about nearly every position.

I am in no way defending Kelly with my next comment, but the issue is not just with the staff. ND is a more difficult path for athletes and there are not a ton of "elite" players that really want to have to put in just as much effort in the classroom as they do on the field....especially the elite players that are basically locks to go pro.

Can Kelly and Co. do better?  Absolutely...but ND just isn't a program anymore that is going to pull in the elite players on a consistent basis.

I’d be pissed if I was Ian Book if only he had better CF coaches he wouldn’t have had to wait until the fourth round of the NFL draft.

Someone forgot to tell Coach Freeman this.

What elite players has Freeman landed? BK/Rees landed a Top 100 QB last cycle (Buchner was #70 overall on the 247 Composite). What Top 100 players has Freeman landed?

By the way, I love what Freeman is doing. He is an elite recruiter and has put ND in a great spot to land some difference makers at LB (Sneed, Junior, Cheeks). But let’s not forget that Tommy and Company got their #1 QB target last cycle who just happened to be a Top 100 recruit.

Who looked very good in the second half of the Spring Game.

Freeman has been onboard for a little more than 4 months. It does take time to overcome the preexisting mindset which was OK with Top 20 recruiting classes instead of pursuing Top 5 classes. In the 2021 class, the defense had recruits ranked 116, 144, 304, 392, 560, 567, 568, 581, 582, 593, 628, 710. Notice that 2/3 were ranked #560 or lower. In the 2022 class, Freeman has recruits ranked 114, 123, 227, 292, 317, 461. None are ranked lower than #461.

2021 average = 479

2022 average = 256

Freeman's class is averaging almost twice the ranking as the previous defensive class.

Here is Kelly's QB recruiting. Notice his history with top 100 QBs. Also, his ND QBs have played in a total of 18 NFL games which says something about his lack of QB development.
