April 30, 20213 yr Surprised that JOK fell out of the first. More surprised at the LBs who went ahead of him. Thoughts? I see a lot of LBs listed as DEs maybe that is part of it.
April 30, 20213 yr Domerdomain is dead. Let it die. The only question at this point is where do we go to get it back? Maybe the Micah Parsons fan owner can direct us. Smdh. Edited April 30, 20213 yr by Rattlesnake

Somebody is going to get a steal early in the second round.
April 30, 20213 yr Interesting that Northwestern had more first round picks than ND & Ohio St combined.
April 30, 20213 yr Given that ND has only had one player drafted in first round in the last three drafts (Tillery in 2019), who is ND's best shot as their next first round pick? This has to be impacting recruiting to some extent especially since Kelly's last non-lineman to get drafted in first round was Will Fuller in 2016 (6 drafts ago). Any chance that Jack Coan will go first round in 2022? ? Edited April 30, 20213 yr by jbrown_9999
April 30, 20213 yr Lol….Jack Coan you are so sarcastic jbrown. How about Hamilton maybe in 2022. And Michael Mayer in 2023 ???

To win the NC, it appears that Kelly needs to recruit/develop better offensive skilled positions so he can score more than 14 points in a play-off game. As a result, to help his non OL & TE recruiting, It would be good for BK to have better success putting skilled players into the NFL. The number one criteria top recruits seem to look for is their best path to the NFL. The coaches/schools BK is competing against for the NC have each had multiple QBs drafted in the FIRST round in the past few years. Not to mention RBs and WRs. Kelly's last non-lineman drafted in first round was in 2016. I imagine that fact gets used to recruit against ND. So while having a safety and TE get drafted in the first round will be nice, it does not really address the question about whether or not BK can develop QBs, RBs, and WRs for the NFL at the same level as the other top coaches.

April 30, 20213 yr JOK is going to buy some unwitting GM another year or two of work. Him falling out of the first can be chalked up solely to a lack of vision. He was hands down the best LB in the class and arguably in the running for the top defender but got pigeon-holed as a 'large safety/undersized lb' instead of "guy that sits on the field and makes plays and gives defense increased adaptability'. Tyrann Mathieu and Russell Wilson are two guys that were similarly pigeon-holed and I'm of the belief that JOK's impact will land somewhere between them. The lines get pretty blurry between him and Roquan Smith who has been productive at the NFL and wasn't similarly pigeon-holed (likely because he was less dynamic in coverage and thus, less easily labelled as a big safety). I'd say smith may be a bit better in the box while JOK is more electric and certainly better in coverage. Hopefully someone belicheck'ian nabs him in the next round and correctly deploys him as the Joker he is (Will early downs and Nickel LB/Dime Safety on passing downs). He's a great puzzle piece that you can just leave on the field regardless of the opponents formation, IMHO.

Just recently read that every national champion in the playoff era has had 5 or more 1st round picks. Do you see any ND recruiting class with 5 first rounders or even a combination of 2 classes?

Not to beat the same old drum but it is like jbrown said, if Kelly can't develop the skill positions (outside of TE) then it is going to be tough sledding. I don't doubt that those classes had great OL production, but I would be surprised if any of those NC classes didn't also include a first round RB or WR or, obviously, QB.
April 30, 20213 yr Author On JOK . I think he got higher grade because alot of guys sat out the year. Shame to because it influenced him to leave college.
May 1, 20213 yr Finally he goes to Cleveland in second instead of first. Has to be nerve wracking for these kids to sit and wait. That was about as painful as the Brady Quinn slide.
